So I finally finished the epilogue
And I’m super upset. I miss Arthur so bad. I’m going to let a friend borrow the game and sit in on them playing just to see him talk.

I did a side mission as John and they actually had John dub over all the lines despite it clearly being Arthur’s mannerisms and speech so they did all this work just to torture me. Is this what it’s like when people have waifus?

I was initially upset over the protag switch since I was thinking "nahhh they wouldn't do a protagonist switch like this twice in a row, right....?" and it was tough getting used to playing as John especially when the game plants you at Pronghorn Ranch where you lose customization and access to your equipment until you get released from there. But after you get to Blackwater and Uncle joins you at Beecher's Hope, the epilogue picks up dramatically and you sort of go from a really downer part (base game's ending) to a surge in happiness when you get to hang out with Uncle, Charles and Sadie and then it all climaxes in the incredibly emotional finale on top of Mt. Shann. I disliked the ending initially but in retrospect I feel like it was necessary to give players a gutpunch of an ending and then make up for it with the satisfaction of the epilogue's ending and the positive vibes associated with it.

The ending is good, I just miss Arthur. I just want an option to change John back and take one last ride around to say good bye.
it was chilling hearing other characters talk about Arthur, the player insert, dying because it was like the story was just moving on without me even though I was in control. And it kind of does because of RDR1.
I watched this last night not even knowing there would be an optional for different cutscenes here. It just shows rockstar really cared for this character and they passed that feeling onto me.

I bought this finally. I read about the dog that joins the camp and what becomes of it and it upset me but other than that I should be fine
Especially if I can kill his murderer.

I also heard theres a "Deliverance " incest redneck encounter

This is the kind of game where I gotta take a break every few weeks due to how serious it is.

How they killed that Italian Boss, gruesome.

Speaking of gruesome, I encountered two lynched and decomposed bodies so far. Rare, but a sick sight.

This game is just putting a lot in perspective for me about American History.

1870s and that "Wild West" era sure were different times. But most of this game feels more like the East.

That's because Red Dead 2 is more "Outlaw America" than "Wild West", people tend to forget that the East was just as wild, they just had scarier corruption in its governance.

Anything I should know before starting? Hints/tips, etc?

Do keep some spare time to complete a chapter, because they are quite long.

Hitching horses is fucking annoying compared to the first game, make sure you line them up right the first time or they will never be parked.

Be sure to eat and keep your guns clean regularly to stay at peak efficiency.

When looting, use your hunting vision ability to spot items you can take.

The game opens up a lot more when you leave the mountains, so that's when it really begins to shine.

Take your time with it, it's a large game with a bunch of side missions and activities, so feel free to "nurse" it.

I was reading some articles and they say to go to Isabella Lake (?) and get a white horse there.
Also something about setting the control scheme to Toggle to Run?

God, this game has such potential. I love love love the quality of life gameplay mechanics.

>looking out from across Big Valley from the edge of a trail on Mount Shann with a customized Lancaster on your left hand
>switching to binoculars to scan the horizon
>grabbing the reins of your horse and walking with it a ways

>diffusing the situation when a guy points a gun at you for getting near his homestead
>doing a heavy sprint and tackling him as soon as he puts the gun down, knocking him out
>his dog starts barking at you and you stomp the dog out
>search his things, he has nothing
>shoot his dog as punishment for the inconvenience and be on your way

There is a lot of opportunity for badassery, both vile and beautiful. And yet the game still kind of sucks to play.
The wanted system is broken with psychic cops. There is not much purpose to be had in free roam combat. And Sam Houser is a terrible writer. The story is laughably bad. The drunk Lenny segment is forced, at least in my opinion, and a cheap ripoff of the Father Godwin drinking quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It was very obviously 'inspired' by that quest.

I don't think it's all Sam's fault, but the story is just not very good. And it's a foundational thing. This isn't the Van Der Linde Gang's rise to prominence. It's its pitiful end. A lot of the main characters (Micah, Charles, Kieran - presumably Sean as well) haven't even been with the gang a year, yet Charles is the most reliable man in the gang next to Arthur and Micah becomes Dutch's number 2.
There are no cool villains, no inspiring purpose, no love interest to pursue, no awe inspiring hero. There is nothing.

These were supposed to be quasi revolutionaries. The closest thing to an ideology we get from the gang is a badly written and forgettable 'American Inferno' short story near Dutch's tent and the newspaper clipping of Arthur's first bank robbery.

The game has plenty of tools to work with, but the things we're able to apply it to feel sub par. I'm hoping for good single player DLC.

I disagree that the story is shit, if anything it's probably the best part. The gang being glamorous revolutionary heroes would not only clash with the point that the first game was trying to make, but it also wouldn't make sense in regards to John's musings in RDR1 about the gang being in a pathetic state towards the end. There's some questionable design choices, an odd amount of glitches, and some stuff that doesn't work in regards to the gameplay. Personally I had tons of fun but I can see why people are getting tired of Rockstar's mission design.

Bad news for everyone, though: https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/29/no-red-dead-redemption-2-single-player-dlc/

I didn't mind the single player campaign, but it would be cool if they did something radically different in regards to gameplay next game they work on.

Already said my peace on the news in the GTA thread, but goddamn if that isn't a heart breaker. It's GTA V all over again.
No when GTA V happened we were told single player DLC was incoming and then claimed said they never said that, screwing us all over while repurposing parts of it for GTA Online. Here it looks like they've actually decided to be up front about it.

Sure took their sweet time to tell us about it, the damn game's almost a year old now.

If they really had no plans, they should've told us sooner instead of making us wait (and giving some poor fools hope).

You mean 2's not getting an equivalent to Undead Nightmare?
No, they'll just make some Halloween events for Online and sell some undead accessories at overly high prices to push their gold bars. At this rate, single player fans would be lucky to get new weapons and items from Online, and even then only for about a year before they "mysteriously" stop showing up.

For reference, that was just one facet of how GTA V's campaign got treated by Rockstar after GTA Online became the favorite.
