Overall I wish more from the PS2 era in general was still going, correct me if I'm wrong but R&C and God of War are the only PS2 era Sony series to still be going, right?
I don't. Given the current creative climate, it's best that these series stay dead. Not even from a SocJus perspective or whatever. Just general writing competence is very much lacking these days, with everyone either going for the design by committee blender, or simply interested in ticking boxes for woke points. Look no further than the latest R&C; R&C 2016 basically misses the point of R&C by a mile, and the original game's writing wasn't exactly high-brow or anything to begin with. Sure, gameplay is shinier (I think a few in this thread has played it even), but it just convinced me that any new entry to the series would have the exact annoyances like these.

Sure, but when I make a statement like that I'm always optimistically assuming they would be good.

I did say it's probably just as well that Jak stays dormant though, but one PS2 era series I really would like to see return of is SOCOM, as I never got to play those online back in the day and I think a multiplayer game that tries to be realistic instead of the usual frag fest would stand out in today's market.

Sony is really lacking in the multiplayer department, same reason I'd like to see, although it didn't start on PS2, another Twisted Metal game.

But I do wish Sly Cooper was still going, I replayed the first game again last year and I forgot how much I miss that series.
I was gonna point out Thieves in Time, but I then I realized it almost came out a decade ago. Time just past me on that one

I'm hoping that the tone of R&C 2016 was just the result of them having to "church it up" for the movie audience and that they go back to basics for Rift Apart(the darker tone gives me some confidence). If they don't have to worry about syncing up their game with Hollywood, we just might get snarky Ratchet back.

Yeah, Thieves in Time was 2013, which is almost a decade ago, as crazy as that is to think about.

@Dom Cruise

Not sure if you knew, but in Blackwater City, if you continually flip jump near the hoverboard lady (R1+X) any direction, her breasts get larger.
lmao, I was not aware of that, but it sounds in keeping with old Naughty Dog and the Jak series.

I miss the casual sexiness games like Jak used to have, why did people get such a distaste for that? What the hell is the big deal?

Even Sly had Carmelita Fox and I wonder if she wouldn't fly today, or get a pass because furries are seen as progressive now.

I remember seeing this a couple times in the 00s. I would love a concept of that realized.

Already happened, and Sly was there as well.

I have said it before, but much of 2016 was due to the film. Sony really wanted an MCU styled brand of generic films they can pump out a year. After R&C, Sly was supposed to come next.

Also Snarky Ratchet has been dead for awhile, as the PS3 titles really smoothed him out. I don’t really take that as much of a loss though tbh. Insomniac was right in saying he was too cruel in R&C 1, and the PS3 titles really did great things with him story wise.

Sony has not forgotten about Sly as they wanted a film back in like 2017. Thieves in Time performed poorly, so it probably put the franchise on hiatus, but I do hope he comes back.
Am I the only one that doesn't care for the Clank sections?

Actually, let me rephrase that. Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal had the best Clank gameplay.

I don't remember much from Tools of Destruction's Clank.
I remember Clank sections being really good in a Crack in Time. Everyone seems to hate Clank’s sections in every game but that one.

Twisted Metal, while PS1, is getting a tv show if you count that as it still going. Hot Shots Golf is also one of those franchises that still exists under the radar.

I guess there is also Medievil and Shadow of the Colossus which both got remakes on PS4.

PlayStation Move Heroes does not count. Little insight from the actual developers.

The gimmick actually worked. Not just Clank roaming about to dodge falling debris. The Clank time gameplay was what had me hyped for A Crack of Time.

Well, Sony failed. Stick to fun games.

I guess there was also PlayStation All-Stars, which did a decent job for a game that was clearly under-funded.

Yep. Sony’s movie line outside of Spider-Man is very poor. I am guessing Ratchet was just used to scrape something out of a dwindling studio.

Twisted Metal, Hot Shots Golf and MediEvil all started on the PS1, MediEvil never had a PS2 game at all.

But I suppose you can see Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian as part of the same series, so that's 3 PS2 series that lasted into the PS4 era, but from what I understand Fumito Ueda has since parted ways with Sony, so we're down to just two PS2 series still going with the PS5.

On a whim I decided to fire up Tools of Destruction. It's been an absurdly long time since I played it, as in six years ago, which is unreal to me. I was basically a different person the last time I played it, and since then I've spent more time with the PS2 titles than I have the PS3 games, so I became really curious how it would hold up.

I was surprised at just how well the game has aged this many years later. A lot of early 7th generation games haven't aged all that well in my opinion, at least not visually; a lot of them are kinda ugly and were mostly just developers struggling to figure out how to make HD graphics look okay. Ratchet meanwhile still looks pretty damn good, partly because stylized graphics tend to age better and partly because it looks a lot more polished than most games of that time frame.

The gameplay itself felt like a refinement of the PS2 era, which is unsurprising I guess, but there were other games that didn't make the transition to the 7th gen very well (mostly Sonic). The fact that the game allowed you to turn off the motion controls made it ironically ahead of the curve when it came to early PS3 titles. Even as a kid I hated the Sixaxis controls, and being able to turn them off at all was kind of a luxury at the time.

I guess I was worried the game wouldn't hold up in the years since I played it, especially after playing the classic games, but I'm happy with how well it's held up overall.

EDIT: 7th, not 8th

Here's all the armors that got shown. It looks like it might have the Size Matters armor mixing mechanic, wasn't expecting that at all.

Guess I was right. Mix and match armor.

Overall, I'm impressed with the presentation. The UI looks cleaner than the initial impressions. Nefarious City looks divine, shit the whole game looks downright gorgeous. The writing and facial animations has been improved from 2016.

One complaint I have is with Rivet. She looks and sounds too plushy for Ratchet & Clank. Like she should be in another game.

I cannot wait to see where Ratchet & Clank goes after Rift Apart.

Started with Deadlocked and went back to play the others back in the PS2 era. I would rather not buy a console for one series, but if I had to this would be that series. I'm happy it's done fairly well for itself over the years.

Would you say Deadlocked still holds up even today? Not just gameplay, but with trends and as a Ratchet game?
