As a person that wanted to play the PS4 version of this game, I will remain :optimistic: if the PS5 version can be as great as the PS4 game, or at least bring back some Easter eggs that made Up Your Arsenal and Going Commando good.
R&C 2016 was free until the end of March. I'm sure you can find it for under $20.

I think Rift Apart will be a massive improvement and well-needed departure from the reboot.

R&C 2016 is not a good game according to veterans.

This would explain why.

Sometimes, I prefer the Metacritic reviews:

And these were just the most recent ones.

There were a bunch of 10’s mixed with 9’s and 8’s, but only a few mixed reviews that were far and between.

Have you played prior Ratchet & Clank games? If so, which ones?
Just the PS2 ones, more specifically the first self titled one and Going Commando. I picked up Up Your Arsenal, but I never got around to finishing it. I’m planning to get the PS4 one in the Summer.

R&C 2016 is a functional game. The writing and dumbed down gameplay compared to the PS2 era games just makes it a lesser experience.

Basically:

The remake is a series of missed opportunities and unfortunate changes because it was trying to tie into the movie. Like how awesome would it have been to hear those old tracks spruced up or redone? That's like the easiest thing to accomplish, but now it's all generic orchestral. Beyond that, a lot of the subtlety and bite of the original is just gone. The social commentary's not really there anymore, and Ratchet himself is really fucking boring.

I think you need only compare the plumber scene in the original with the remake to see that the remake just isn't as good.

What's even crazier is that the original is so fluid and lively while the remake is static and lifeless. Somehow a 2002 game ends up animating better than a game in 2016. I want to chalk that up to the remake being a tie-in and probably not having enough time to have fully animated cutscenes, but it's just sad.

What's sadder is that the gameplay itself is fine, but everything surrounding it is just lesser. It highlights just how important the the music, writing, and characterization was to the original.

Oh boy. Another of my childhood coming up.

Anyone who unironically complained that Ratchet was a dick in the first game is a smoothbrain and all their opinions should be disregarded. His attitude at the time was absolutely understandable, and was part of the central conflict between Ratchet and Clank for two-thirds of the game. His maturing over the game (not series, given his personality mostly solidified by R&C 2 and 3), and the same for Clank, albeit in a less obvious manner, was what elevated what was a generic video game story about a teenager going on adventures by swinging a large wrench, into something that's memorable.

It's safe to say that the remake, both game and movie, completely missed the fucking point of the original game. Even disregarding the social commentary, which I honestly didn't find all that convincing, I was appalled by how generic the remake was. The blandest of the bland that somehow manages to suck even more dick than the OG video game writing. And they even bragged about hiring actual writers for this. Really makes you think on the quality of writers these days.

I thought 2016 was fine, but I can see why people had a problem with it. It definitely jettisoned almost all the edge and corporation parodying (like I said earlier) in favor of a more generic story. Oh and they made Nefarious the surprise main villain instead of Drek, because of course they did. I blame this partly on it being tied to the movie, which I've never actually seen but heard was total shit.

Now that they've come out and said 2016 was just Qwark's "version" of what happened in R&C1, I think I'm more lenient on it than I'd be if it was the new main continuity. It basically got shoved aside and turned into a what-if story. Same reason why I can't completely sperg out about stuff like the DMC reboot.

That itself poorly retconned Qwark's and Dr. Nefarious' prior relationship established in UYA. See the vid-comics for proof of that.

I blame Hollywood more than Insomniac for the reboot and movie. They changed the script of the 2016 reboot. Generic, kiddy bullshit.

I enjoyed the gameplay of the reboot a lot tbh, level design was generally pretty strong, and the movement and aiming feels great, my mayor problem with the game, other than the terrible kid movie writing, is that it is very easy, and the pacing feels off.
Other than that I think the game is a good entry in the series, not better than the first as I feel the first still has some of the best level design in the series, but better than into the nexus

I heard that 2016 had great gameplay, but the story was rough. You really cannot blame Insomniac though, Sony was heavily marketing Ratchet & Clank to be their MCU. They wanted to set up a line of kids films based on their IPs with Sly being next in line. They likely made it as inoffensive as possible to be marketable to general audiences and have a super hero feel.

Kinda surprising Sony is going back on their cancellation of the movies idea. Now they apparently are using TLoU and Uncharted as a launching off point for TV and movies. The most surprising thing is them dragging the corpse of Twisted Metal out for a tv series after 9 years of nothing.

I remember a few challenging points with the reboot.

Beating the hoverboard race in Rilgar under 1:35. I had that same issue with the original as well.
Beating the final boss without the RYNO. A lot of grinding otherwise with other weapons.
The trespasser puzzles. I did get the trophy; after NG+ I just skip them.

Other than that, the reboot was easy to progress. Just grindy if you're planning to 100% it.

I really liked the 2016 reboot. I see the complaints but also feel like it stems from 'im in my mid 20s/30s and expect games from my childhood to cater to me'.

With the movie being made to appeal to children I expected a 'retcon' of sorts to introduce Ratchet as awholesome character vs the 'edgelord' he was in the first game. and indeed...he was a wholesome character with worldbuilding motivations.

If the reboot was the original introduction to Ratchet & Clank, I would give it a hesitant pass. Yeah, the writing was that bad.

The sad thing about the reboot is that wholesome Ratchet is endearing. PS3 titles show that to be the case. The main issue is that the film tried so hard to cash in on modern trends and just had forgettable allies and characters. Quark and Nefarious, while overused to some extent, really came into their own on PS3 as they were so animated and full of life. Ratchet 2016 just lacks that charm, Qwark is not the super goofball and Nefarious is bland rather than the suped up, yelling, show stealer he was on PS3. The story was also just a generic coming of age tale. I like wholesome Ratchet, hell I typically prefer it, but 2016 just lacked the great story and character animating of PS3.

The lack of good animated cutscenes like the ones in the ps3 games is one big problem the 2016 reboot had, another is that ratchet and clank really dont show any development into becoming friends unlike the original game
And the OST in the reboot. Compared to the original, it's generic orchestra music. I cannot recall one theme from that whole game.

Rift Apart apparently has the composer for Thor Ragnarok and the Rugrats. Some take this as a good sign for music.
