I'm reminded of why the PSP R&C games didn't have much staying power with them beyond being handheld experiences.

I like the comparisons made with SAC to other stealth games. Yes, SAC would technically be considered a "stealth" game. Camera is too close to Clank, gadgets are too situational, guard patterns are broken and takedowns are mere QTEs.

I did not like the casino level with the doppelgänger gadget. Or the QTE sequence with Clank playing cards.

Weapons lack punch as well. Enemies do not react to your weaponry and you run out of ammo too quickly.

And about the canon of SAC: it's confirmed that SAC (the game) is a mere episode of SAC in universe. So I can ignore the plot holes in and of itself.

Daxter was a much better game offering a portable experience with the “hero’s sidekick”, and Ready at Dawn was a much better developer in general.

Would have been nice if they tapped into more Sony IPs instead of selling out to Facebook.

I loved Daxter. I never played Jak 2 before Daxter. Still, I understood the story as its own. I had no prior knowledge of Jak & Daxter, so I don't know how I got into Daxter itself. It was definitely made with the PSP in mind.

Golden Bolt is back. This time, his essay is on the Future saga of Ratchet & Clank. Rather, the ambition that Insomanic faced with developing R&C for the PS3.

Description:
This is the story of one broken promise, a promise that's hurt every Ratchet & Clank game since 2007's Tools of Destruction. Ratchet & Clank has always been defined by its ambition, and this ambition was never clearer than with the PS3's Ratchet & Clank Future Saga: A multi-game story arc that aimed to be too big for any one game. However, some of the folks at Insomniac Games had promised much more than they could achieve, telling Sony representatives that R&C Future: Tools of Destruction would have full multiplayer and co-op support - features that were NEVER in production. The Future Saga would never recover from this promise, as Insomniac rushed to "make it up" to their upset publisher, and the Ratchet & Clank series has paid the price for it ever since.

It's over two hours, so this will be a movie experience. :semperfidelis:

I think Ratchet and Clank on PS2 was good 1-3, i fell off when PS3 series took over and tried to make it too much like a pixar experience out of them. Not for me
But i heard about PS5 Rift Apart game... you can skip puzzles -_-. Which means.... you only bought it for this reason

The PS3 COULD run a lot of things. CAN it? Rift Apart on PS3 will just be sluggish and ugly with the rift tether mechanic. The SSD is literally doing the heavy lifting. Hell, it could barely run Fallout.

Try playing Skyrim on the PS3, try playing Skyrim on the PS3 with all the "fixes" installed.

Secret Agent Clank (PS2) has god-awful load times. I could literally make a sandwich and it'll still be loading.

From what I understand the PS5’s SSD is needed for the “use-dimensional-rift-to-enter-a-part-of-a-completely different-level-in-a-minute-or-less” parts of the game rather than the rift mechanics in general, I know that rifts used to access pocket dimensions and other parts of the same level are basically the same portal mechanics that have been present since 7th-generations (and even earlier if you take the various “warp pad” mechanics present in PS2/GCN/XB games into account) consoles came out.

So I finally managed to get a decently priced ps5 and play the game. Overall it was really good and avoids cringy shit that's so popular nowadays. Biggest problem is the length, it kinda feels like the entire third act got axed off which is a huge shame ( the devs should at least release an arena level for Ratchet).

More in depth review:
- Characters: Ratchet and Clank are still their lovable selves, thankfully the game didn't feel the need to tear down Ratchet to prop up the new heroine. Speaking of which, Rivet is alright and isn't the mega-bitch/pixie girl that are seemingly the only to ways to write female characters this days. Kit is kind of a female Marvin, which is also a nice change from the norm. The classic duo have good (if a bit childish) character development that can be constituted as a send off. The new duo have their own character development that's a bit rushed in the end, though it might be saved for the next iteration they'll star in.

-Story: It's alright overall. Though not really using the multiple dimensions plotline too much (but that might be a blessing). Nefarious kinda overstayed his welcome but Emperor nefarious is fun (if a bit underutilized because of the rushed last act), I thought the game would make a twist that the GIR look a like is really the one ruling the empire and had secretly bumped off the emperor. Also they have a fun credit song.
One thing that really annoyed me is that there are no planet/weapon videos which is a huge shame since those were always hilarious. Instead we have Invader Zim talk about the weapons in a really unfunny way.
I think the game would have been better having more quiet scenes to have the characters talk, especially with the new cast, since the plot feels like it rushes from scene to scene.

-Combat: I played on the hardest difficulty, which felt easier than the ps2 games. The weapons are fantastic with only one stinker (the ricochet) and with the ps5 remote gives a good feedback it's just fun blasting apart enemies. The rift mechanic sometimes pops up as teleporting around the arena, but it's usually not worth it since it leaves you vulnerable. There is a dodge button, but the devs actually managed to balance it by making it stop you after the dodge, which is genius and makes you switch between running and dodging. One big issue is that there are only three minibosses cycled through the game and it gets really repetitive to fight them over and over.
Also the puzzles are alright, it is nice to be able to skip them in ng+.
Also no melee weapons, wtf?

- Exploring: It suffers from the Uncharted syndrome of huge setpieces that make you feel like you have no real control. It's still nice to explore the planets, with a few of them having big open areas, though I wish the secrets could have been better hidden.

- Graphics: It looks fantastic and run fantastic. Being able to continue playing within five seconds of turning the (non handheld) console on is great.

I recall a few melee weapons in R&C: the Walloper and the frail from Deadlocked. I would think melee weapons in R&C are redundant as you have your wrench.

The wrench only lets you do a few things, the other melee weapons are usually pretty interesting at the very least, starting with the Walloper from the first game. The flail from Deadlocked was simply OP given it has a long range, high power, and shoots a shockwave. It's definitely fun to use until you realize that it makes the game way too easy. Plasma Whip (I think that's what it was called) from UYA was cool too even if I don't recall it being that great.

There's a lot of stuff they could do with melee weapons in R&C but I wouldn't be surprised if the reason they never did much was them is because they're either too similar to the wrench or they'd take a lot of messing with the physics engine to be fun.

I remember UYA having a lightsaber skin for the wrench.

Was it a cheat or an unlockable?

And Going Commando had three wrench upgrades as you progressed. Bonus points to Quest for Booty for that kinectic technology on the wrench.

It was unlocked when you put in a specific cheat code when you’re in the pause screen.

Clank talks a bit too much in Rift Apart. Maybe it's the 2016 reboot ruining my perspective of R&C dialogue. There IS a difference in writing between the PS2 era and the PS3 era.
