This may be a mild OT, but I don't know where else to put this. I was reading about Perfect Dark on TCRF and I noticed this:
These strings were unused in the final game, but since we are apparently at the date of Dr. Caroll's defection I wanted to compare today's world with what we see of Perfect Dark's:
1. Autonomous AI/Drones
Nobody outside the MIC knows the true capabilities of drones. But it's "common knowledge" that if the communications with a drone are knocked out, the drone can fly autonomously, at least for a while. The idea of drones patrolling the streets with perfect IFF (Chicago: Stealth) is still fanciful, but not implausible for a work of fiction IMO.
2. Personality AI
With the advent of chat models like ChatGPT and GPT4chan, it's safe to say that mankind isn't yet at the point where personality AI can make critical decisions, but is just taking it's first - faltering - steps in this field.
3. Robot Vacuums
The first Roomba was released approximately two years after PD's release. I think it's safe to say they never really caught on. AFAIK even megacorps still hire humans to clean their offices.
4. Megacorps
I won't dwell on this too much due to its inflammatory nature. There doesn't seem to be any kind of law and order in PD's world. Aside from FBI and CIA agents hanging around (Chicago: Stealth again) megacorps can just wage open warfare on each other (Carrington Villa: Hostage One, Carrington Institute: Defense). We're not at that point yet, but then again
What do you guys think? Is there anything you think PD got right or wrong?
One final note for kiwisisters born in 1984: Congratulations! You are the same age as "old woman" Cassandra De Vries:
