I recently picked up Rare Replay. Honestly? Its fantastic. Very underrated and at a good price too.

They get a bad reputation nowadays but tbh I don't blame them really. The blame is on Microsoft and Nintendo. Nintendo for declining to buy them and Microsoft forcing them to scrap everything to make shitty kinect titles.

I grew up playing:
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Banjo Kazooie Nuts n Bolts
Kameo Elements of Power

I know the last three are highly controversial nowadays fan reception wise. But honestly I believe they hold up. Even the meta humor in Nuts n Bolts is still funny to me which you'd never get with say Nintendo.

I played only a bit of Perfect Dark Zero but it seems like it got good reception originally and then tanked. It's not terrible. Didn't start the original yet. Or Conker.

Jet Force Gemini i know of having had a video tape of a game program where they talked about Nintendo releases. JFG was the big one that they previewed. Apparently they ended up patching it in Rare Replay to fit more naturally control wise.

If Microshit's Keksbox division wasn't run by retards who were too busy with legal battles because they flew to close to the monopolistic sun, they would port RR and Fable 2 to Steam.

I really don't know why this hasn't been done already. Same thing with Goldeneye although I can see why that might cause some issues.

Jet Force Gemini was cool. I just remembered lot's of blood and guts and little ewok people being mauled by giant insects.

I really want to try Jet Force Gemini on a more modernized control scheme because, while I loved the hell out of that game as a kid, I don't think I could really put up with N64 controls anymore these days.

I had a similar experience with the XBLA version of the OG Perfect Dark when that came out. Game felt so much better on "modern" controls.

I watched a YouTube video of a guy who did a retrospective on Grabbed By The Ghoulies and honestly the game doesn't seem awful. Idk.
It's very, very charming but it is hampered by the gameplay loop and how it controls. It's a sloppy brawler when it could have become a classic like Zombie's Ate My Neighbors. Like I said, very charming with fun things to see, moments you will remember, but playing it can be a fucking slog.
Kameo was a way better game than Ghoulies, don't get me wrong Kameo was a middling alright at the time, but Ghoulies is way more memorable.

Nuts and Bolts is great though and I wish Rare Replay was on PC.

...
It's really good with a modern scheme, easily my favorite part of the bundle. There's one exception through, and it's been a while so they might have fixed it, but the Floyd missions were far more difficult than I remember them being on the N64 and it was just because of controls.

I think I've seen that same video, and Ghoulies is a game I've always defended since it came out. Partially because I was an Xbox fanboy back then, but also looking back at it as an adult, it retains a lot of the "Rare charm" from the N64 days. The humor is still there, there's a ton of detail poured into the art direction, and I think it's a pretty good 3d brawler with a weird but fairly intuitive control scheme. (Cameras are a hot mess, and there's no lock-on to enemies, but it came out in 2003, that was the standard). I always liked when Rare did weird games, my favorite N64 one to play is still Blast Corps.

Tooie was super ambitious for the time, retards will complain endlessly about not being able to 100% stages the first time through and then in the same breathe claim they love Metroidvania's
I was actually surprised about the hate because I played it more than Kazooie (I rented kazooie). The backtracking isn't terrible...also the warp pads are there for a reason.

The humor as usual was top notch. The octopuses and electric eels scared and continue to scare the shit out of me. The various british-isms are funny too. Madame Grunty sometimes beating the shit out of you is funny. The SUCK/BLOW buttons, the menu items at Jolly's, the flying saucer game, yassss yasss! Even the dumb stuff like the two dragons waiting for the pizza deliveries is hysterical. Wumba turning you into a mobile washing machine that fires underwear at enemies....I mean come on. It kills me.

The numerous callbacks, cameos, and references are fun like the stuff in the emporium, blackeye talking about project dream, etc (taken to the extreme in Nuts n Bolts for the better)

Speaking of Nuts n Bolts, ok, look when Rare can make fun of themselves with a BANJO MUSEUM LEVEL (!!!) containing an actual trash can from cloud cuckooland containing copies of Ghoulies...I've yet to see Nintendo, SEGA, etc do it and do it to that high polish.

That's one thing rare always had that other developers didn't seem to grasp until much later, they knew how to laugh at themselves and knew how to make a joke part of the gameplay. Other than Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, Jet Force Gemini, DK64 and maybe a round or two of Killer Instinct I hadn't tried much of Rare's catalogue until Replay came out.
But some hazy thoughts I have had kicking around my head for the last couple years since the game released are:
Battletoads is fun but pretty bullshit at a lot of points.
Battletoads Arcade is a blast and has awesome sprite work.
Kameo is a really decent little launch title that more kids probably would have thoroughly enjoyed but unfortunately wasn't marketed at all.
Conker while funny has aged terribly in the gameplay department.
Perfect Dark is a solid console shooter, it doesn't hold up well compared to it's computer based contemporaries though.
BK and BT still hold up well of course.
Jet Force Gemini is basically a straight port and is in desperate need of a better control scheme.
Killer Instinct Gold is... well I never got the appeal but some people like the series.
Grabbed By the Ghoulies would be a much better little brawler if the combat was more interesting.
Perfect Dark Zero is a really boring attempt to cash in on popular shooters at the time, it's super uninteresting and the gunplay feels unsatisfying
And the Viva Pinata series I never understood the appeal of and still don't despite really trying to play the damn things

It's a flawed game, but I enjoyed Grabbed By The Ghoulies. Sure it's not perfect, but I had fun with it. The game also has some good music and a good art style.

I also have a personal reason for enjoying it.

The day I got my copy, I went with my grandma to take our dog to the vet. I had a great day that day spending time with the two of them. A few weeks after that, our dog was hit by a car and died. Every time I play GbtG, it reminds me of that great day I spent with my grandma and dog.

To be fair, the gameplay in conker wasn't really that great when it first came out. The multiplayer was the best part of the original n64 conker. I played through the single player game once then never bothered with it again. I found it kind of tedious and a bit of a slog that was really only worth it for the humour. But we played a lot of multiplayer conker.

It's kind of funny how the Xbox One, a console that's bereft of exclusives, happens to have by far the greatest game compilation ever made as an exclusive. It has Blast Corps and Perfect Dark. The Xbox 360 port of Perfect Dark, even. Fantastic games, and most people don't get to play them. The interface is very nice, too, the whole thing has a circus theme.

The theme song for the collection is great too. Rare really puts heart and soul into their games. Chris, Grant, everyone. (Did you know they use staff to voice characters. Its funny the Great Mighty Poo is a legit trained baritone. Joanna Dark said when she takes her kids to and from school the parents are all "omg is really you?" and the lady who plays Berry admits her American valley girl accent is bad but iirc she's Irish (or Scottish?) Its just a shame that the kinect faggotry damaged them a bit.

Were the flying controls and swimming in BK always a pain because I don't recall it being so finicky on n64. Took FOREVER to kill the snowmen in Freezy Peak.

It is annoying though that they just ported the 360 ports for some of the games. Let me play it with Xbox One achievements dammit lol.

Nintendo fucked up big time by refusing to purchase them. Its literally the 90s Sony-Square-SEGA [war] deal but worse.

How's Goldeneye? Might double dip just for that.

Hell iirc they got Sean motherfucking Astin to do the Sea of Thieves promo.
