There's a serious problem when a person unfamiliar with those cartoons can't tell that the characters all came from different shows.

Well, term "CalArts style" in orginal meaning wasn't as widespreaded as it is in curren one and characters from 80-90 feauture films were a lot more complicated in design, anatomy knowledge was more important in drawing them etc. Maybe I'm subjective, because I kind of like this style.
Modern meaning of "CalArts style" is also flaved, but most of people use it just to describe similarities between very simplicized art style in most of (not all!) popular American cartoons, mostly by Cartoon Network and Disney XD. People usually don't RAGE ON HATE ON that style when they use this term, just noticing the similarities and sometimes add "I wish there was a little more variety". It's not all of those cartoons look exactly the same (Disney XD ones have thicker lineart for example), but they are similar.
Every decade or animation house or country (as a big fan of Italian cartoons/comics/illustrators I can spot them easily after years) has their distinct style. You can dislike some aspects of that style.

But writing posts about how THIS IS HATE YOU DONT UNDERSTAND, I'M WANNABE CALARTS STUDENT I KNOW BETTER! is pointless, because those opinuions are usually not hate, but normal critisizm in worst cases.

Wannabe CalArts students are like new wannabe mangakas, really.

That's how I feel about this whole thing, really.

I don't think these cartoons look inherently ugly, I don't think they're animated too badly either, but there is definitely a homogeneous feeling to cartoon styles right now. No matter who is at fault, whether it's schools, or studio execs, or whatever, folks ought to try and strive a little more for individuality.

That's an interesting way of putting it. For a while, folks who engaged in drawing in an anime style were accused of being too "samey" as well.

It seems like there's a cycle to stagnation in style though. Like, it's generally kinda easy to tell if a cartoon is from the 80's, or the 90's, for example. I'm interested to see where these style trends go and what the new "samey and boring" thing will be.

Regardless, these kids really outta quit taking things so personally and try and understand the criticism. :powerlevel: I had to go through it as a faggot who draws in an anime style. Now I feel like my shit actually has a bit of personal flair because I try to avoid common pit falls and observe from life more.

I think that the artists who pioneered that style back then were just copying from Don Bluth and 70s Disney, but they were poorer draftsmen who could only copy on the surface level, and their designs ended up flatter and didn't move as well in 3-d space. (I know I sound like a rabid John K fanboy.) You're right that every decade of animation kind of had its own style, but I feel like there was more variety back then. I mean, in the 90s, you had all sorts of creator-driven cartoons with individual looks. Even just looking at one network, for example Nick, Doug looked nothing like Ren and Stimpy, which looked nothing like Rugrats, etc.

And yeah there is a huge inability for Cartoon Network fanboys (mostly Steven Universe from what I've seen) in general to take any criticism of shows they like.

Nobody's saying that it's bad. We're saying that it looks way too homogenous and has very little fucking variety.

These people need to get over the fact that things like the CalArts style exist, and that it's not a good thing. Every time a new wave of CalArts styled media comes out you have the creators and their die-hard-frothing-at-the-mouth fans defending it and making excuses for it, like it isn't a plague on creativity. Naturally, tumblr would be the first community to fly to its defense.
To be fair, some of those shows (like Gumball, GF, Star, and SU) find ways to make themselves visually distinct from each other through animation style. It's not excuse for samey looking designs across the board, especially compared to the cartoons of yesteryears, but credit where its due.

So, I've never seen Ghostbusters, but I do have one close friend who loves it, and asked him about this whole debacle.
Long story short, he said that he hates what he has seen from the reboot so far because of the quality, not just because it stars women.

Earlier today, I saw the trailer, and it doesn't impress me (although I can't make any comparison to the original). Do these feminists have bad taste?
