Poor broody hen. That nest was not in an ideal spot; chickens will often just start laying eggs in a corner or some other secluded place. Once a hen is sitting on enough eggs at once, brooding behavior triggers: the hen enters a state of torpor where she wants to do nothing but sit on eggs and obsessively rearrange them for three or four weeks. The rearranging is vitally important since if an egg sits in the same position for too long, the embryo will stick to the inside of the shell and die.

The eggs also have to be kept very warm; the hen can't leave them exposed for more than about thirty minutes. She'll just get up once or twice a way, gorge on food and water while making specific clucking sounds that warn the other chickens to not bother her, then return to her nest. You can see how the underside of her wings -- and the rest of the feathers on her belly -- are matted and dirty as hell; that's because broody hens don't preen themselves. They just sit, and sit, and sit until either the eggs hatch or it's time to give up.

I remember articles about 12-13 years ago about the crisis in ol' nippon about guys not marrying women and having kids. Some of the guys' responses were that having cats as a pet was better because they are cute- even they are older. Women though.... And malaria>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>women. And they were mocking going after older slutty women calling them the "past it crowd," and saying you don't understand Japanese women. They are more "demanding than a newborn."
Those women have to be in their late 30s to 40-55s by now.
