I dont mind the hunting of large game. It helps to keep the numbers down and raise funds for conservation. However, I think that the hunting of any intelligent animal for sport should be banned. This should include whales, dolphins, great apes, some monkeys, parrots, and elephants.

With the exception of some great apes and some elephants, these animals are exceptionally friendly towards humans and pose no threat. They also have a high degree of awareness and intellect. They are emotional and some have complex methods of communication. If they had thumbs they would likely being running to planet.

The exceptions to this should be the killing of dangerous animals, animals which have killed humans unprovoked, and the killing of animals who pose a danger to their own species. For example, sometimes older males can kill younger males and keep females from mating with fertile members of the species.

I think that the killing of elephants and similarly intelligent animals, when not justified, should be treated as murder. The reason for this is that you have violated the NAP of an intelligent and self aware organism. In addition, these animals should be given their own preserves where they may be conserved.

I'm not particularly fond of hunting great cats or similar apex predators, either, but there's often a trade off because the people who do big game hunting often bring lots and lots of money which justifies keeping them around in general. A lot of the funding for wildlife preserves in Africa comes from shit like this, and like it or not, it's preferable to the other option of illegal poaching and other shit completely out of the control of anyone but outright criminals. Anyone with the money to do this shit can pay someone off in most of these corrupt shitholes and it's at least marginally preferable to have some of the money go somewhere useful.

An artist's interpretation of a the ancient saber toothed cat dinofelis preying on an australopithecus. What a twist of fate it was that millions of years our ancestors were hunted and got their shit pushed in by lions and saber toothed cats and now man has turned the lion - his once greatest rival - into an endangered species. While the extinction of other species caused by humans is tragic to some degree, one can argue that on a strictly evolutionary level it does speak of our success.
