I had to walk past this place a lot on my way to classes for a few semesters and it is just an ugly aluminum mess, but much of the "art" inside is just as bizarre as the exterior.

That "art" exhibit reminds me of this classic.

I can't speak for everyone, but in my experience, every single artist who said their visibly low-effort work was "symbolic" were among the laziest procrastinators I've ever met. For instance, one made a video of themselves recording a timer counting down a half-hour for the entire 30 minutes, with the video cutting to black the moment it hit 1 second left, and she said she "planned" and recorded that video the morning it was shown; a bold feat given it was shown at 8 in the morning. Another artist who was meant to do portraiture just drew lines on some paper and said they were making lines according to how they "felt" listening to music, when in reality I saw them spending most their time fiddling on their phone while making the piece and devoting around three or so minutes to actually drawing. "Symbolism" is the cherry on top of a well-made piece, but it's just a cop-out when "symbolism" is all it has. For instance, this descriptively named photo called "Piss Christ" is symbolic, but it's also visually interesting, at least as far as a statue in a jar of piss can go. It sold for a lot, but that was due to the intense provocation the piece stirred due to its controversial subject matter.

Compare that to this art piece, "Onement VI," which only has symbolism without any visual intrigue or effort put into it, and I'm not even sure you can call this "symbolic." It's described as follows:

"[This piece] overwhelms and seduces the viewer with the totality of its sensual, cascading washes of vibrant blue coexisting with [the artists'] vertical 'Sign' of the human presence[...]"

It's trash, and no art critic, assuming they aren't tricked into huffing their own farts due to the price tag which unquestionably was slapped onto it as a tax write-off, would call it otherwise. It's valued at over $44 million because a rich man from a rich family got his rich wife to tell her rich art critic buddies to auction it for other rich people to buy. Or perhaps I'm being cynical, but you tell me.
