Judging by the placement of his hands and the movement of his arms, he might have been scratching the cat's stomach.

If a person never had a cat before, it's useful to know that cats rarely enjoy being pet anywhere besides their head and neck, and they absolutely hate having their stomach scratched. Past that point, the cat dug its claws into his thick pants. Because he freaked out, he started throwing the cat around as its claws were stuck in his pants' fabric, escalating the situation.

When you have a cat that's rowdy, the worst thing you can do is panic if it scratches you.
