If you have birds you don't need fence them in, raise a couple of geese instead. They are territorial and if raised in one place that's their home, that and the surrounding area belongs to them. Other birds won't socialize with them with the exception of ducks but not even turkeys will stray far from their commanders and protectors. They might go on a field trip and be gone for a couple of hours but they will return. If they disappear or get lost then wait, it could take a day or two, and listen for the honking, then go pick them up. It's the only time an adult goose will consent to being carried.
It is both sweet and sad in the autumn when the wild geese starts migrating south, flying and honking while your geese stands on the ground, looking up and honking back. Eventually they will try to find a long, flat and straight piece of land like a road and use it as a runway, trying to join them. They form a line, they actually line up and wait their turn. Then the first goose spreads its wings and starts running as fast as it can, and they're surprisingly fast when giving it absolutely everything they have. It jumps into the air and at its peak they might get up to shoulder height.
One, two, maybe three seconds of gliding before it crashes and slides on its chest like a jetliner without landing gear. It then gets up, walks to the side of the road to clear the runway and head back to the group while the next goose is having a go.
If you let them they will start doing this routine everyday, for as long as they have the energy. They are stubborn and dedicated.
