It technically hasn't been adopted yet. Still has to go through operataonal testing, which I guess will determine if the extra weight and reduced rifleman ammo is worth the extra power and accuracy it or not. And whether those in command think Russia will figure out how to give their infantry actual body armor by the time a potential peer conflict kicks off.

Yeah, but I was reading a guy putting all the weights together and it's over 13 1/2 Pounds fully loaded, and the ammo is twice the weight of 5.56. It sounds like REMFs getting off on "Overmatch."

Yeah, but I was reading a guy putting all the weights together and it's over 13 1/2 Pounds fully loaded, and the ammo is twice the weight of 5.56. It sounds like REMFs getting off on "Overmatch."

4 lbs heavier overall load with 70 rds less ammo according to wikipedia. I guess the calculus is that the weight is a necessary trade-off for increased armor penetration against (hypothetical) peer/near-peer body armor, and the reduced ammo carried per soldier is balanced by massively increased accuracy from the XM157. But again, still needs to go through operational testing; and I'm curious as to how all that plays out in reality (how much the extra weight is tolerated, how much the extra ammo is missed, etc.).

I agree. I don't know that it's a good idea, as I just don't know that armor is the threat they think it is, but we'll see how it goes.

I agree. I don't know that it's a good idea, as I just don't know that armor is the threat they think it is, but we'll see how it goes.

Whether it deserves an upgrade to the 6.8mm or not, you can definitely assume that body armor will become more and more common in the near future (China's moving towards it if they're not there already, Russia will probably eventually get their act together, and even some terror cells have some). Even if the round and the weapons aren't accepted though, I can definitely see them adopting the fire control system or some variant of it at least. That shit looks well worth it.
