Gastric Brooding Frog

An Australian science project to resurrect an extinct frog species has been named one of the world's best inventions.

The Lazarus Project centres on a genome technology developed by researchers from the University of Newcastle. It was included in Time magazine's 25 Best Inventions of the Year 2013 list because it has been successfully used to bring back to life the gastric-brooding frog.

Bermuda Petrel

Commonly known in Bermuda as the cahow, a name derived from its eerie cries, this nocturnal ground-nesting seabird is the national bird of Bermuda and can be found pictured on Bermudian currency. It is the second rarest seabird on the planet and a symbol of hope for nature conservation. The Bermuda petrel has a greyish-black crown and collar, dark grey upper-wings and tail, white upper-tail coverts and white under-wings edged with black, and the underparts are completely white.

For 300 years, it was thought to be extinct. The dramatic rediscovery in 1951 of eighteen nesting pairs made this a "Lazarus species", that is, a species found to be alive after having been considered extinct.

Caspian Horse

The Caspian is an ancient breed previously believed to have been extinct for over one thousand years. This strain is probably the most direct ancestor of the Oriental breeds and subsequently of all light horse breeds. The Caspian is extremely rare and barely pulled back from the edge of extinction in 1965. In 2008, the Caspian horse world-wide registered population still numbered only 1600 with an estimated 220 now deceased. The population is native to northern Iran.

Crested Gecko

The crested gecko or eyelash gecko is a species of gecko native to southern New Calendonia. This species was thought extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994 during an expedition. Along with several other New Caledonian gecko species, it is being considered for protected status by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.

Pygmy Tarsier

The pygmy tarsier, also known as the mountain tarsier, is a nocturnal primate found in central Sulawesi, Indonesia, in an area with lower vegetative species diversity than the lowland tropical forests. The pygmy tarsier was believed to have become extinct in the early 20th century. Then, in 2000, Indonesian scientists accidentally killed one while trapping rats. The first pygmy tarsiers seen alive since the 1920s were found by a research team from Texas A&M University in Lore Lindu National Park in August 2008.

South Island Takahē

The takahē, also known as the South Island takahē, is a flightless bird indigenous to New Zealand, and the largest living member of the rail family. It was hunted extensively by Māori, but was not named and described by Europeans until 1847, and then only from fossil bones. In 1850 a living bird was captured, and three more collected in the 19th century. After another bird was captured in 1898, and no more were to be found, the species was presumed extinct. Fifty years later, however, after a carefully planned search, takahē were dramatically rediscovered in 1948 in an isolated valley in the South Island's Murchison Mountains. The species is now managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.

Ancient breed of singing dog, thought extinct for 50 years, appears in wild - Classic FM — Moz...jpg

New Guinea Singing Dog

An analysis of the DNA of three wild dogs living above 4,300 meters (14,000 feet) on the island of New Guinea matches that of captive New Guinea singing dogs. These findings show that the New Guinea singing dog is not extinct in the wild, as most zoologists had assumed.
In 2012 an ecotourist snapped a photo of what looked like the dog in a remote and mountainous part of New Guinea. The picture eventually landed in the hands of James McIntyre, the field director of a conservation foundation.
McIntyre headed to the area where the image was taken, set traps, and collected blood samples. He then attached GPS collars before releasing the animals.

The coelacanth ancient but is an airhead- An insight into living fossil — Mozilla Firefox 3262...jpg

Coelacanth

Termed as living fossil because it lived alongside the dinosaurs which is giving experts a new understanding of skull and brain development among vertebrates.

The coelacanth was thought to have vanished with the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago. But a living specimen was found off the coast of South Africa in 1938. However, it would be a long time until another coelacanth would be caught. Efforts continued for many years to catch a second specimen, and even with the offer of a £100 reward no further coelacanths were caught. Eventually, two local Comoros Islands fishermen caught a coelacanth when fishing for other species in 1952. In 2000, divers went down as far as 115 metres to gain footage of three coelacanths living in their natural environment off the coast of South Africa.

This ancient marine fish is seen as something of a puzzle as it survived the changes which is almost impossible for the living organism because if something is not needed in nature it will be thrown out of the natural selection. But the Coelacanth has prevailed despite all the changes and provides valuable insights into how other marine and land animals evolved.
