This is Barncat. She decided our barn would be her new home territory about 10 years ago. I named her Barncat hoping I wouldn't get too attached but that was foolish in retrospect. She gets to go to the vet like a normal housecat but she has no interest in coming indoors. I guess she's a barncat for life. I can't say if she likes to scrap, but she's an accomplished fighter and has fended off countless would-be usurpers of the barncat position.



We're in a pretty rural setting and see more than a few feral and abandoned domesticated cats. Barncat has an interesting filtering skill where she seems to know whether a strange cat should be allowed to hang around the property and interact with the humans, or mercilessly driven away. If she lets a strange cat on the property and doesn't attack them on sight, then we'll usually try to get them comfortable enough around us that we can get them to the vet and then find a home. Every cat that passed her filter has successfully transitioned back to having a human family; which is over 20 cats at this point.

Killy is the latest cat to pass the Barncat test, and we decided he should just live with us since we were currently without a permanent indoor cat. He's around two years old and has an incredibly high prey drive. He needs to play a lot, which is fine by me since I've been working from home for so long now. When he chills out, he's extremely social. He has a bit of a food anxiety issue that we're working on.
