I don't see why. The ships could be catapulted into space, and once you're there you don't need to keep the thrusters on to go in a direction, just one thrust and you're freely floating through the void. They could also be using conveniently light and powerful sci-fi fuel.

These ships all have massive engines, though. You'd think at least some of them would have big fuel tanks, but none of them do. Most don't even have any fuel tanks.

scifi space ships usually have some kind of warp drive technology that basically serves as a magic black box allowing ships to go mega fast with minimum fuel consumption
