I think Jazz was a bit better than ZIP when it came to that but I can't swear on it, all I remember is ZIP disks getting fucked up at inopportune moments while I had a SCSI drive in my bag so I never had to deal with any of that.

The thing was that even with the click-o-death the Zip drive was cheap enough (for the disks) that you wouldn't terribly mind if you never got it back. Jaz was fine for doing file transfers for yourself (from work to home and back, say), but Zip was perfect for submitting a large print job to a printshop, because if you didn't get the disk back, eh, who really cares, it was $10.

They were both killed by CD-Rs on one side, and 'fast enough big enough' USB flash drives on the other.
