I played it a lot during my teen years when the game was super popular. I thought it was great but definitely not the type of MMO you could play solo (playing RO solo was boring as fuck), I had a Priest and it was fun. I haven’t played RO in years though but I’ll still say it has one of the best sprites in gaming to me.

Is it true that RO was a game about killing the same monsters 75000 times per day for several years? What was the actual gameplay like? Spamming AOE spells over and over?

I remember that there used to be a shitty RPG competition on Charas Project and someone submitted a game called "Fagnarock Online".

My first -and only- MMO.
Discovered it by accident around 2003.
Looking for manganime images, I found this

From then on I decided I wanted to become a professional artist.
Made a bunch of fanarts back then. These are from 2004-2005.

TL;DR: Ragnarok Online codified a big part of my current professional interests.

That's freakin sweet

Played it for a bit decades ago. Pretty much a standard grindy as fuck korean MMO, you needed as much xp to get from 96 to 99 as 1 to 96 type shit. It did offer decent build freedom as far as those games go though.

It was fun to fuck around in if you had a proper party to play with, most people sat outside prontera/whatever that place with the cave was called (payon?) and used it as an expensive chatroom.

I remember finding this in like 2004 and figuring out to power level my knight guy with a spear by attacking stationary enemies well over my level at a range. Then I tried to RMT buy some rare card I wanted for this build I thought up and convinced my mom to let me do it. Then I got scammed and it pissed me off so much I quit the game forever.

Had fun with it when I was a kid, but never got very far due to the insane grind. It had a good vibe and an artstyle that looks great to this day, plus some fuckawesome music.

It was a fairly early MMO, I can't really blame them for it not aging well. I just wish the game itself wasn't such a slog.
