'R Plates' introduced on Australian roads

A new type of car plate has been introduced on Australian roads to help encourage extra consideration for drivers recovering from trauma.
Australian service and repair company mycar Tyre & Auto, formerly Kmart Tyre & Auto, has launched "R Plates", also known as "Return Plates", to identify drivers returning to the road.
The idea is the plates will encourage empathy from other road users, so the returning drivers feel less pressure as they adapt to being back behind the wheel.
The plates have been introduced after a survey of 1000 Aussie drivers in August found 73 per cent had been affected by a road incident.
One in five of the drivers said they continued to feel vulnerable since returning to the driver's seat following a hiatus off the road.
Two-thirds of drivers also said they felt safer on the road having a visible P plate or L plate on their car when learning to drive, according to the survey done by Pureprofile.
The psychological impact of accidents on the road is often overlooked, according to Dr Jason Thompson, an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne and an expert in transportation and post-injury rehabilitation.
"People talk about the physical injuries associated with car accidents, but we often overlook the psychological impact associated with the experience," he said.
"The journey through to recovery, and a return to confidence, is unique to each individual and often takes time."
Thompson said he supported the use of R Plates.
"Returning to the road can be a scary and a nerve-wracking experience, so even just having those feelings recognised could help people in their recovery," he said.
The plates also include a QR code which links to support services.
The mycar Tyro & Auto initiative is not yet backed by a government regulator, with the company asking drivers to petition for this to happen.

yeah no shit I'll be more wary and most likely try to overtake you lol but displaying that plate is like an invitation to get bullied on the road IMO

This is idiotic. These fucking losers will use those plates as an excuse to drive like assholes, then act like victims when they get the abuse they richly deserve.
I for one will unhesitatingly use the air horns on my truck to bully these pathetic cretins.

The other 1/3 have made the mistake of driving when I was on the same road.

Yeah its another case of forcing crutches where they aren't needed.
If the drivers learning to drive are held to the same standards as any other seasoned driver they are pressured to keep up and develop high standards , if you give them a "i'm just learning uwu" stamp then they will forever subconsciously justify all of their bad habits with it

Sure some retards will take advantage of this but my misses was taken out by a car full of bindis that didn't stop at a fucking stop sign and she's anxious to drive again, especially with a baby in the car, and she'd feel better with those plates on until she got her confidence back.

How does a big dumbass R help anything? Like sucks what happened to your old lady but this idea is pants shittingly retarded

It's psychological, how is this hard to understand? I'd never use it but you can't deny some people would benefit from it.

How do motherfuckers get through their lives anymore? When the slightest hurt, loss, disappointment or inconvenience requires special accommodation from the rest of us? JFC...

So literal Retard plates? Ned Kelly must have gone to another country.

I love that you have to read through the entire article to get to this final line.

So this isn't even something the government is doing. This entire article is a bullshit ad for a product. Well, at least you can just print one out from their website... That happens to have their logo on it.

That's like taping a piece of paper saying "kick me" to your own back and hoping someone will take pity on your poor bullied soul. All it gives you is a false sense of security. "I've got my retard sticker now everyone will be careful around me". At best most will ignore it or have no clue what it means and at worst a pissed off dickhead will take it as a challenge.

It's just an R on a blue background, why even go to the website.

Although I did get one for my pirate ship, which I was anxious to sail after I got my leg taken off by chainshot. It's a big psychological boost going back to the high seas with my ARRRRRRRRRR plates.

I'm surprised the Britbongs didn't come up with this idea first.

Student Driver stickers make sense especially if it’s one of those cars where the instructor has a brake on his side.

Because it lets people know that this car may do unexpected fuckery and be careful.

Everyone should treat every car as a potential source of unexplained and unexpected fuckery but the reality is nobody does.

But adding the Retard sticker doesn’t seem useful and is just going to make for all sorts of fun “stolen valor” videos where the R car is caught on dashcam being retarded.

Oh shit it’s a blue check mark for cars!

Just reminds me of this dumb kid that cut me off as we were slowing down for a stop light... I waited till we got going again and halfway forced him off the road in sudden fashion while just staring at him.

Don't fuck with me on the road, I'll be crazier than you can be.

Reminds me of the "Baby on Board" signs back in the 80's and 90's. Doubt they did any good, except for the sign makers. Doubt these things will achieve the desired result. Just man up/woman up and drive.
