I always bring up housing costs between two cities I have lived in, Detroit and Hamilton, Ontario. Both have large steel mills, hence why I had to live there. The similarities are stark. Heavy pollution, lost of jobs due to de-industrialization, poor housing stock, high crime, poor schools, shitty football teams, etc.
But the sole difference is that a crack shack in Detroit will run you about $5k but in Hamilton, it's around $450k. And the reason is that so many people need to get into the Toronto metro area, they are willing to sit in traffic for three hours one way or else they lose their jobs.
It's so bad up north compared to the US. I got offered a really good job in Hamilton and I turned it down because I still couldn't afford to live there even if I wanted to.
