Even at the height of their fame, before any of their dirty laundry came to light, I never liked the Duggars. I found them to be a cloying and parochial bunch, who's apparent orderliness and stoicism belied a deeply dysfunctional relationship to the world and to themselves (much like all Quiverfull types, really).

With that said, I can feel nothing but sympathy for the family now. I can't begin to imagine the pain a parent or sibling must feel in response to revelations such as these, and I can't confidently apportion blame to anyone other than the son responsible. Could it be that the deeply repressive nature of his upbringing made him turn out like this? Possibly, but it doesn't make the situation any less sad for the rest of the family.

I don't even want to think what it will be like for his children to have to come to terms with this. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

The youngest victim Josh molested was his 5 year old sister. The youngest victim of child exploitation on the files he downloaded was 18 months, and all the victims were under 12.



Per what the law studed posted, there was nothing mentioned about what he did and didn't watch. I read the posts as they were being uploaded, so it was before the /duggarsnark mods editted it. There wasn't any mention of what he did and didn't watch, nor was there testimony about not watching the 18 month old, or turning it off when he saw it was snuff. They only specifics were what he did download and unzip (all of it), and that about 200 files were in allocated space, so he tried to delete them, but never deleted them from the hard drive. Whether or not he watched any or all of it probably makes no difference in the case.

I do suspect that the repressive and cloistered nature of his upbringing created an environment where his sisters and the family friend were the only women to assault. Something that's not uncommon in the gothardite world, given IBLP publishes pamphlets about sibling incest and sexual abuse (hint: the victim is to blame and it's also god's will) I can't find the exact pamphlet now, but here's another one about sexual assault. Given Josh's sneakiness and manipulative nature, I suspect that if he was a 14-15 year old out in the real world, he probably would have had related and non-related victims. I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume that all 14-15 year old boys are curious about female genitals and sexual things, but most have a moral compass and are old enough to know right from wrong. They'd never consider victimizing a girl to satisfy their curiosity. Additionally, most normal teenagers aren't curious about toddler bodies, but josh molested his 5 year old sister.

The parents didn't treat it seriously. They sent him to a christian bootcamp for a month or so. They put locks on the doors, and they made their daughters forgive him. They didn't treat him in a constructive way that would discourage his predatory nature. In later years, they'd not only leave him alone with his younger siblings, sisters included, but he was also in charge of them as the eldest and golden child.

His parents aren't to blame for his present crime, but they definitely raised and nurtured a predator.

I doubt he was surprised by the film. What are the chances he was just looking for the "not bad" CP and accidentally ended up with the file? He also served as a Representative or in some other political position, and because of said position, gets free healthcare for him and his family.

Christianity is actually extremely varied. There are dozens of different officially recognized denominations, sects, etc. There is nothing wrong with this. While I of course have my own beliefs and wholeheartedly disagree with some, I personally don't like to split hairs over minor disagreements and different interpretations.

However, I see stuff like this and I have to wonder what they think God is or what he does. You can't pray the child porn away. God is not going to let a reoffender sex pest get off scot free just because "he a good boy son I just know he'll change." The only thing you can do is is pray and hope he will change and then resign yourself to His will. And even is the 0.00001% chance thing happens and he is "reformed," angels aren't gonna swoop down and fly his ass out of prison. That's not how it works.

You might recall the Thieves at the crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus was being crucified alongside two thieves. One of them mocks Jesus for not saving himself if He is supposedly the son of God, and the other repents. Jesus then says that He will see the "Penitent Thief" in heaven. When the Penitent Thief repented - reformed if you will - God did not send angels down to remove him from the cross, heal his wounds, and give him a new life. No, he still had to pay for his earthly transgressions. Even if Josh really does "repent," well he has to stay in prison.

I know that some of this stems more from the parental instinct/obligation that causes parents to go into deep denial and keep doing for them when their kid is a shithead than it does muh Quiverfull but still. And before you ask - I've never been a fan of the Duggars. I am chomping at the bit to see this unfold.

I wasn't saying he didn't have it on his drive. I was joking that his excuse was going to be that he downloaded it by mistake, looking for less horrific CP. Like "your honor, yes, I was looking for child porn, but I was only looking for little girls spreading their vageen [that was in the original description of some of the files in the hearing], I would NEVER want to see nudes of little girls under the age of 4! I'm not a monster! That DD was a mistake, the file names mislead me!"

While they cloak their beliefs and rules in scripture, those scriptures are taken out of *reasonable* context. They also use scriptures to justify criminal acts of beating wives and children. They can justify it by saying god approves, it's there in the scripture. Thing is, the law of the land doesn't. That supersedes their gospel, or should. I don't think there's a single person out there, outside of his religious community, who gives a damn about josh's soul or the eternal repercussions. I'm confused though, TMZ is reporting the youngest victim was a 5 year old, but other sources say it's an 18 month old. If it is a 18 month old, and they refer to it as DD, there's no way it wasn't Daisy's Destruction.

According to this USA today article, the investigator said Daisy's Destruction was found in his files, so that is what it stands for.
