Not strictly Quiverfull, but bodycam footage was recently released of the arrest of Samuel Bateman who is the self-ID'd successor to Warren Jeffs. He committed the classic felon mistake of violating traffic laws while also committing horrible crimes across state lines. He was arrested in Flagstaff, AZ for allowing his child brides (the youngest being 9) to ride in a trailer without seatbelts.

EWU compiled the bodycam footage into a pretty cohesive documentary here. It's incredibly creepy seeing the teen girls basically recite sovereign citizen lines while the police are just trying to identify them.

This sect was apparently extra freaky and would require followers to engage in group sex acts, with Bateman apparently also requiring male followers to fellate him as an atonement ritual. Several other members were arrested as well for the CSA including some of the adult wives, which like, idk I know they're brainwashed but it's basic human instinct to know that you can't do that to a fucking 9 year old.

At a certain point, wouldn't you just get tired? I've always wondered this about predatory male cult leaders.

Maybe this is one of those things where if you don't have a conscience you don't get stressed out about stuff. No conscience means none of the stress and exhaustion that makes a man simply not up for it all the goddamn time.

I'd just assumed that it takes a certain set of personality traits to stay an cult leader. Plus, having an abnormally strong sex drive is kind of associated with certain psychiatric disorders

Jeffs himself has always read like some kind of sex maniac to me, too, and Bateman seems to be similar in that regard. Plenty of the adult wives involved in the Jeffs stuff also co-signed what was going on and were present for some of the rapes of minors. Cults are generally skeevy, but the FLDS always seems extra-skeevy-- maybe because it's been around long enough that there's a lot of information available to the general public?

Bateman tries to differentiate himself from Jeffs with the way he styles "his" women. Jeffs-following women wear those sherbet-colored pastel dresses and never any red; Bateman-following women wear the deep, dark jewel tones. Because the best way to assert your religious differences is obviously how you style your female sex slaves (while you yourself dress normally).

The "atonement" thing is a loaded term for the FLDS. It's something that shows up in mainstream LDS stuff, but the FLDS goes to an extreme version. They talk about "blood atonement," which always seems to work out to "a good reason to make my followers kill people who disagree with me and/or are threats to my power."
