Odd religious movements that offshoot from the Abrahamic faiths often have something to do with sex. Basically every heresy ever was accused of “sexual immorality” in general, sometimes more specifically. I wonder if it partly has to do with how the Israelites as a people were strange as hell and the shift from a poly-to-mono focus regarding god happened mostly with a small group of people dislocated to a city which like most of the region had religious beliefs involving sex and the creation of the world and fertility. So they focused heavily on distinguishing themselves from the more “Sex has sacred aspects” of their host cities faith, along with the focus on their preferred deity of their pantheon. 200 years of that shit then getting sent home is going to lead to a hell of a divergence.
