Metal Sucks (Archive) - August 26, 2022

Metal in recent years has seen something of a resurgence. Rock and metal acts are in commercials. Ghost’s Impera hit near the top of the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart earlier this year and now “Mary on a Cross” is blowing up on Tik Tok. A 36 year-old Metallica song is the backdrop for a major cultural touchstone. Our musical home is getting bigger and more people are finding their place within it.

All these things are good. Yet still, we at MetalSucks see it all the time. People trip over themselves to spout some ignorant bullshit about how sacred the genre is and why today’s teens are ruining everything.

As a species, we humans are complex animals. We laugh, love, hate, cry, fight, and communicate like no other creature can on this planet. Our intellect affords us the capability to create on such a high level that there are literally limitless possibilities to what we can find and enjoy in our short lives.

And yet with so little time before we die, why do so many people—especially in the metal community—stick their noses in other people’s business? Why do so many people shit on someone else’s musical tastes or feel the need to test their fandom for wearing a certain band’s shirt? It’s a dick move and honestly does more harm to metal than good.

When you reduce someone’s fandom or interest in a band to something less valid than your own views on those things, you make it harder for that other person to find their footing into the genre. I’ve seen it happen countless times in other things—I used to play a a certain card game competitively (here come the comments…) and I can’t tell you how many times I watched as new players grew discouraged from falling in love with the game. Though the overall community is great, a few bad actors that thought they knew everything there was to know about the game made it seem like the new player was an idiot for thinking a certain way. That the way they wanted to interact with the game was wrong and that they would never succeed with that mindset—so they just bounced off the game and left forever. That’s not a sustainable situation, regardless of whether it’s music, gaming, or anything else.

How easily you forget where you came from. Unless you had a cool sibling or family member that brought you into the fold, you likely stumbled upon the genre yourself. It’s more likely that you waded through hours of Korn and Limp Bizkit tracks in the late 90s and early 2000s because that was insanely popular at the time. It’s what MTV played on Total Request Live. It was on the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack. Only through those gateway bands did you find the likes of Slayer, Death, Dimmu Borgir, or some other “kvlt” group.

So if most of us stumble our way into the genre, why do so many people forget that fact and shit on someone else for not being “metal enough?” In a recent Loudwire editorial, Steve Byrne, a licensed psychologist and an associate professor of counseling, said gatekeeping stems from a cocktail of insecurity and bad social skills, among other underlying problems.

“It’s just human nature to see others who are not like us as a threat in some way because we’re all pretty fragile,” he wrote. “Unless you’re delusionally confident, everyone feels insecure at times, and subconsciously, we’re all trying to prove to ourselves and others that we’re good enough. One tactic for doing so is to label people who aren’t like us and put them down.”

So when you criticize someone for liking Babymetal, you’re really shouting to the world that you’re unsure of your place within it. You’re telling everyone that deep down, you think you might not be worthy to carry the metal banner—and that’s bullshit too. You’re just as worthy as the kid reaching for that Disturbed t-shirt.

Now, that’s not to say that all bands or art are inherently good because someone may like it. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Music, like any form of media, is not safe against criticism or backlash. Nothing should be beyond reproach and if you have a legitimate gripe with how the music is played or the content therein, that’s fine. You’re giving an opinion and expressing your viewpoint as a fan of the genre.

But to say that only you know what’s “metal” and what’s not is ill-conceived at best and maliciously conceited at worst. If you’re still a kid and you’re reading this, your brain is still developing so I’m sure I’ll get flamed in the comments for my “woke” idealism and unnecessary call for civility. If you’re an adult, however, and you see yourself reflected in the very concepts I’m lambasting here, you still have time.

Grow up. Get over yourself and stop yucking everyone else’s yum. You fucking poser.

Lol while no one likes the insufferable faggot calling everything they don't like as not "real" metal, people are right to loathe the people only into it as a fad or to subvert the fanbase.
You're pretty gay if you think the kid with a Chimaira tee is a poser because he doesn't listen to Celtic Frost, but you're even gayer if you're defending the hot topic crowd instead.

Fucking whiny squeakers. They want everything handed to them with no effort on their part. The older veterans of any hobby or fandom have always been "gatekeepers" who challenge the new kids wanting to access the group and become members. If some snot nosed kid is wearing a Motörhead t-shirt and only knows Ace of Spades and has no clue who Lemmy is, then they're rightfully going to be called out as a poseur and shit on for being a fake fan who is only adopting (or appropriating) the aesthetics because they think it makes them look cool. Gatekeeping keeps the the group pure for those who actually have a love for the band/hobby/whatever. The older veterans paid their dues and proved their dedication, and they're the ones who keep the fandom alive. They're the ones who lived through it, often times from the very beginning, and they don't want a bunch of entitled kids who can't even name five songs from the band coming in and acting like they own the place, telling all the established fans how things are going to be now. If the new blood actually loves the band or whatever and have some actual knowledge then they'll be expected to prove it just like everyone else, but will otherwise be welcomed with open arms. Gatekeeping is healthy.

I remember being naive teenager who thought that more people liking same things I do would be awesome, why wouldn't I want more people to experience stuff I find cool? And then everything I liked has been infested and molested by crazies and things I liked no longer exist - lesson for whole life, gatekeeping is good, having standards is good. The bar doesn't have to be very high but there needs to be a bar or you will get infestation every single time.

European metal has almost always been better
If we're just talking about Britain then yes that's somewhat true. Otherwise, the only good metal acts from Europe were big in the 80s and geriatric now (like the Scorpions, Yngwie Malmsteem, Can,etc) or are Bathory. Black metal always will be a meme genre just like death metal no matter how much they try to copy progressive rock/metal. I feel like Japan is the country with the best metal acts since they have X Japan, Boris, and Ningen-Isu along with a ton of other acts.

Edit: I just remembered there's a technical death metal band with a gay Puerto Rican man who is the guitarist and vocalist of said band. What pisses me off is that he has the gall to say he's breaking down barriers by being a gay man in metal (like Doug Pinnick doesn't exist or something) and combating its "toxic" masculinity. Not really an example of Europeans not being good at metal (that would be the edgy gay Norwegian black metal dude who basically said the same shit), but black and death metal are memes. More on topic, this is the type of leftist shit metal fans should shut the fuck down as soon as it pops up. While I like listening to older metal records, wokefags coming into the fandom is going to shit up. This is why I gatekeep (blindly sometimes even).
Metal is the faggiest genre ever created, it’s impossibly lame.
That's a weird way to say country. Even fucking rap is better just by virtue of the fact that the feuds, drama and the incomprehensible lyrics make it more laughable than an all out assault on the senses for the most part.

I'll stop gatekeeping when you morons stop fucking up everything you touch.

People gatekeep white supremists, pedos, racists and whatever out of many places so why is gatekeeping bad? 🤔

I want gatekeeping around all various hobbies to stay purely because the level of chimp out when they discover a teenage girl shares a hobby that an adult man has made his entire personality will always be hilarious to me.
With some hobbies the reason the teenage or young girl is into it is because one or both of her parents are. If it’s a nerdy hobby chances are her dads a nerd and was the one that introduced her or her boyfriend or husband is a nerd, and introduced her to the hobby.

When it comes to tabletop gaming and many nerd hobbies, the issue imo are the simps, many of which were already in the hobby, and are crying because they blame the other nerds for why their favorite v-tuber is fake crying. That as well as YouTubers and bloggers who are constantly trying to stir up controversy for clicks.

Most of my nerdy hobbies I found on my own, but parents definitely influence their child’s interests, look at all the 5 year olds defending “their” footy club haha.

You’re spot on about table games. We ended up creating a girls game in high school because some of the boys were so salty they deliberately ruined the game for everyone playing if there was a girl at the table. Naturally, all the horny sane boys left the completely destroyed plot and came to join our game instead. That just made the angry weirdos chimp out completely lol.

Like I said, I agree with gatekeeping for the amusement factor for sure, because a lot of what has been mentioned or memed here are dead set to rights. I don’t agree with gatekeeping when it’s adults essentially bullying children about their burgeoning taste in music etc. if you wanna get shitty with adult poseurs? By all means, I know I have have. But kids? Yeah nah.

Honestly, I get so excited to share my hobbies with the next generation, it’s like watching a younger version of yourself hear that song or the first time, or kick their first goal, break records etc. i will never understand people who go all Comic Book Guy because some poor kid didn’t know Placebo didn’t write Running Up That Hill.

Yeah, I think Rob Halford got there first for that.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with gatekeeping.

There‘s also nothing wrong with beinv a casual fan. I’m not a metalhead, but I like Masterplan and Sonata Arctica a lot. And it annoys me when people tell me that because I don’t like Rush or Pantera I don’t “really“ like metal. Just because you don’t have the same taste, it doesn‘t mean you don’t like something

The problem is when casual fans try to act like hardcore fans, or when hardcore fans somehow get offended by casual fandom, especially when it’s someone who genuinely wants to become a fan and gets driven off by people either telling them they’re doing it wrong or overwhelming them.

I remember years aho watching a girl go to a bookstore, pick up a comedy manga that she seemed interested in, and then having the guy next to her tell her that it sucked, it was a waste of time, and if she really wanted to get into manga she should read Berserk. At which point she put it down and walked away. Drawing a distinction between fan and casual is fine - chasing off people who genuinely want to learn is inexcusable.
I've always liked metal due to its crossover (pun intended) with the punk and hardcore scene. I've never worn a battle vest yet there's always people that like the music, but don't fit the stereotypical look of a fan. Do they truly enjoy the music or are they wearing a shirt since they think it looks cool or because some celeb or pop musician wore a metal shirt their stylist gave them? Jared Dines, Loudwire and Revolver have a few videos regarding this and the idea of posers. Speaking of the manga guy, I had a friend that would constantly do that shit. He would say the Japanese title of the anime or manga and came across as an annoying douche to any girl he came across. Any fandom that has that elitist snobs are the worst and turn off casual fans that show the slightest interest in said music scene or hobby.
MetalSucks is leftist gatekeeping at its worst with a bunch of pansy jews whining about everything.
They used to have a sense of humor and were entertaining. At least when Finn McKenty was writing amusing shit talking posts under his Sergeant D pseudonym. I first found out about Anthony Fantano when Sergeant D made a Metal Sucks post that ridiculed him for fawning over a live Sunn0))) show. https://archive.ph/7ON4z

Ghost is not a metal band and this authors opinions are invalid for stating that they are. I don’t give a fuck if they won a Grammy for “best metal performance” the Grammy committee obviously knows fuck all about metal.

I would gate keep this nigger straight out of the mosh pit. And I’m mostly what some people would call a “core kid” ffs.

Jethro Tull won a Grammy in that category over Metallica. Didn't they stop televising that category anyway awhile ago? The committee hates metal. They need more air time for Beyonce and whoever the fuck is trendy right now.

This person probably thinks Imagine Dragons is metal.

>Ghost
>Metal
Opinion immediately and eternally disregarded

Gatekeeping is an unqualified good. normies and tourists fuck off.

After what happened to DnD, I'll relentlessly gatekeep going forward. Normies who listened to Critical Role were already annoying enough but when the crazies started pouring in everything went to shit.

Imagine trying to play a campaign in your favorite setting, Dark Sun, in CURRENT_YEAR...

Just wanna say I didn’t know who Finn McKenty was until about a year ago when I started heavily getting back into metal (deathcore specifically, thanks Lorna Shore) but I really like him. He’s fairly entertaining and not afraid to tell brootal kids they’re dumb when it’s necessary.
