I have found my new holy text for studying sexualities: A “tree of life” plotting the niche interests served by more than one thousand NSFW subreddits from r/GoneWild, to r/bizarresex, and everything in between.

Piotr Migdal, an independent data science consultant with a PhD in quantum physics, wrote in a description of the project that the tree is a visualization of an existing dataset of NSFW image URLs scraped from Reddit, which was meant to train machine learning models. The result is this tree-graph visualization of where those images are hosted.

Migdal told me in an email that there are 1,505 subreddits in the tree, total. But this tree doesn’t include every single kink and fetish subreddit on Reddit—notable omissions include r/blueberry or any type of fart porn. Perhaps because they weren’t included in the source dataset, or the visualizing process missed them, they’re not on the tree.

Seeing all these subreddits laid bare like this really brings home how varied, complex, and occasionally disturbing our sexual proclivities can be. But this tree isn’t a perfect example of every kinky corner of Reddit—just as it leaves out non-obvious kinks like blueberries, it includes satire porn subreddits like r/ScaryBilbo.

The tree’s broadest categories include terms like “body parts” and “age,” and from there each breaks down into more specific subreddits. “Body parts,” for example, branches into upper and lower body (ass, genitalia, asshole, hips, gap, feet, and legs), and from there breaks down into more specifics (under genitalia: penis, small or large; vulva, hair or labia), head (and hair colors), breasts (large, small and implants, but also from-and-angle like r/SideBoob and r/Underboob), and so on.

Eventually, they boil down to more specific subreddits, like r/girlsinpinkundies, r/hotamputees, and r/showerbeergonewild. There’s a subreddit out there for just about everyone.

“While human sexuality is a delicate subject, I deeply believe it should be discussed... rather than shunned as a taboo topic,” Midgal wrote in the blog post describing the project. Previously, he wrote a guide for straight male “nerds” struggling with romantic relationships, called Dating for Nerds.

“My philosophy is that data visualization is like poetry—and it has two authors, the creator and the viewer,” Midgal told me. A beautiful thought for a work of sublime data-driven perversion

Reddit is proof that even God makes mistakes.

Edit: He has a WTF branch at the very end. I guess at some point, he stared into the abyss just a little too long.

And why is this necessary again?

Nobody wants to see Redditor sexual fantasies.

Even Redditors don't want to see Redditor sexual fantasies.

Great use of that PhD; when your Dark Matter papers aren't getting published in the scientific journals, so you write a script that scans plebbit for deviancy keywords.

Use that skill for possible time manipulation, then you'll be taken more seriously.

All I see is an unhealthy obsession with pornography.

Reddit porn subs get so fucking granular that is a really funny idea to me. Done right you might get some insight into the rabbit hole people slide to arrive at the more extreme stuff.

But a true tree of life depicts phylogeny- evolutionary relationship. This just groups by observable characteristics, which is only phenotypic. I imagine you might try and map reddit "evolution" by tracking the date subs are created and what users migrated to the new subs, maybe by mods participating or who created them. So for example, we may hypothesize that r/deepthroatwithtears is the spawn of r/deepthroat for people who want more specificity. It doesn't really tell us anything about the origin to just group it all together under "oral."

So he made a list of porn subreddits, good job. This is so weak I can't even use my lazy CatParty thread title joke about how I'm going to scientifically chart the public's sexual proclivities by feeding news articles about people exposing themselves in public into a markov chain or something.

Mediocre!

Yeah I could do what the dude did literally with 10 minutes of googling with my super secret hacker keywords (like site:reddit.com)

But he used machine learning, which is a term that has become to mean anything from neural networks to somewhat complicated if..then blocks. (and therefore lost all meaning) It's basically "block chain" trier at this point.

"I'm gonna use my powerful machine to discover that the fetish of r/girlwithtoys and r/buttplugs is sex toys, donate to my patreon, thanks".

Piotr Migdal, an independent data science consultant with a PhD in quantum physics

An independent bullshit artist with a PhD in science flavored bullshit, is how I am reading this.

But then he isn't really making any wild claims. But quantum physics + machine learning? That's a recipe for a big ol' pile of fucking bullshit.

There is no way in hell you are going to convince me that Reddit only has three foot fetish subs.

r/gayincest, r/girlspooping, r/mariorule34... Please god just send the fucking meteor already. I can only imagine the horrors in r/SRSSex.

lol one’s just called r/tipofmypenis.
IIRC that one's more like "tip of my tongue". Like people go there to describe porn they watched a long time ago that they want to watch again but can't remember the title. So rather than just finding new porn they ask the other perverts if they saw that one too.

I did some serious machine learning as a kid when I touched the belt of a sander.

That’s completely different from what I assumed it was, and a sub I could revolutionize far less than I initially thought.
