I think what's most interesting about this is how it signifies the death of the television as the centerpiece of home and culture. For millions of years, this role was fulfilled by the fire and the hearth. That was what people sat and watched when the day was done.

In the 20th century, the television supplanted the hearth, beaming culture directly to humanity from centralized locations. Naturally, game systems were designed to interface with that new paradigm.

Now the television is dying, so producing a self contained system makes more sense than ever. Where do you get most of your media? You get it on your laptop as you lie in bed. Everyone does. I haven't touched my PS4 in a month. I'm dicking around on my laptop in bed every day. That's the future. The hearth is portable, now.

Even more evocative to me is the parabolic acceleration in collective change. Millions of years staring at a fire. 100 years staring at a television. 20 years staring at a computer screen. Something is coming, pulling us all out of time.

In 1985, Sir Clive Sinclair outright stated that portable computers were the future, with the barrier at the time being the screen. Of course, that's long since been solved now, as we're seeing stationary devices becoming more and more specialized, to cater to specific tasks in professional and enthusiast markets, as laptops and cellphones have taken the place of the general purpose computer.

This is wrong and also exceptional

Nobody fucking buys laptops they buy Ipads and smartphones

If people want to game they don't buy a laptop they buy a desktop

Laptops are the literal exceptional island pygmies of PC machines and they're one volcano blast away from going extinct. It's why people who ask to buy a Gaming Laptop get shit on because they're buying overpriced garbage.

Saying portability is the future is wrong because the switch isn't fucking portable. I can't fit that shit in my pocket. The Switch Lite is defective and they charge extra for all the basic switch accessories that the larger model came with. The portable aspect is the absolute worst aspect of the machine next to the joycons being garbage. You need to bring a separate bag just for the switch. All together it weights almost the same as a PS4.

Americans spend a hell of a lot of money on TVs and Monitors, the console market is also the biggest.

There's also still the stigma of playing the switch in public while people don;t care if you fiddle with your phone. Mostly because a phone is a general use device while the switch is a specialized machine.

Laptops still sell well, particularly with students and anyone who does a lot of typing. The experience of typing on a tablet with one of those fold-out keyboard cases is flat-out godawful, and tablet OSes never quite got out of the realm of just being more like gigantic phones than proper computers. And I know that's being solved with how Surface tablets run Windows 10 properly and newer iPads are getting the pecular iPadOS update, but they're still not the comfortable fold-up-and-take-with-you devices that laptops are.

There's really no reason why they couldn't make a pocket-sized Switch. Nintendo just seems to be dragging their feet, and the Switch Lite is a bizarre middle ground between the full size tablet-like Switch and a proper pocket console. Maybe they're waiting until they sell off the last of the 3DS stock? Who knows.

I don't care if someone sees me playing vidya while waiting for something. That "stigma" is just a GameFAQs troll thing. Everyone's too busy with their own lives and thoughts and what's making them feel like shit today to care about what some faggot nerd sitting around playing a Switch is doing.

The 'central point' is not a tangible entity in this new paradigm. It's a concept, nothing more. There is nothing physical, software from steam et al is nothing more than fiat. People buy it because they trust it. It has no actual value, it's ones and zeroes.

The megacorps selling all these ones and zeroes exist only as icons in the mind of the consumer. They are no more a seller of products than Jeff Bezos.
Yep. I'm still a Steam customer because they've been remarkably reliable and good about keeping any and all software I've bought from them live, even games that had been delisted a decade ago. You really can't say that about many services, especially Apple's own App Store. For a while I bought games for my iPhone, and about half of them are now completely unlisted or just don't work on the newest iOS. You'd think a major company like Apple could do a better job than Steam, considering they own and control every single square inch of their platform, but that's Apple for you. Bioshock iOS didn't even last a year before it was gone and uninstallable on the newest iOS, never to be fixed.

You know what made a resurgence? Fucking Records which have now outsold CDs since the first time since 1989. You now have people making improvements to old technology and revitalizing long forgotten patents which were dumped when other media forms were coming out. You can walk into best buy or PC Richards and get a brand new record player.

Physical media will never truly go away.

Great example. People love their favorite media, and want to ensure they can hang onto it for the rest of their lives, and pass it along down the line. Digital media has made for a sort of natural selection of the media that's being archived: disposable EDM from the random bedroom DJ of the day who got a song on Monstercat will likely never see a physical release, but a popular song from a remarkably talented artist that resonates with people will, as it'll be something valued and held close to the hearts of many. Limited Run and the like wouldn't be in business if hard copies weren't so sought after. You know, if ever I created a game, I'd think one of the greatest moments of my life would be to hold a pressed disc containing my game. Getting something you can hold and share with other people just makes it feel so much more real and valuable.

Laptops themselves are still doing fine. I'm not a big fan of the newer models getting thinner and thinner (which means no way to replace the battery easily) but that's another debate. And gaming laptops get shit on because they're heavy and cumbersome, get very hot and never last long if you were to play games without the device charging, which mean the portability is very limited in the end. They're expensive to boot for a 1/3 of the power you get from a desktop build in the same pricetag or less.

That's why I liked the PSP/Vita during public transports or long break sessions back then. Those handhelds were small and you could immediately pause the game and get back to it later on in one simple power button press.

There's also still the stigma of playing the switch in public while people don;t care if you fiddle with your phone. Mostly because a phone is a general use device while the switch is a specialized machine.

If you look like a fat lard with zero fashion sense while playing on your handheld full audio volume in public, then yeah you gonna get some weird looks. Otherwise nobody gives a shit you play on either a handheld or phone like Pissmaster said.

Steam doesn't do anything to make old games still run. That's the responsibility of the publisher that put it in the store. And there's plenty of old games that run like shit on Steam.

The reason a lot of the stuff still runs fine is because Microsoft cares a lot about backwards compatibility - They have plenty of large customers that want to keep running their in-house software that hasn't been updated for 20 years..

That’s why I have high hopes for console streaming and project Xcloud.

I want portability very badly because I am sick of needing a tv for gaming. I want privacy ( so just buying a new tv won’t cut it) and not having to share tv time.

You have no idea how lucky you are if you can just hook up your console and play peacefully whenever you want.

The Nintendo Switch is a very misleading console . Sure it seems “cheap” but repairing the joy con drift is an issue. And the non removable battery means it’s lifespan is way lower than most people think.

And most of it’s games are just ports of these dying generation.

Sure getting Skyrim and Witcher 3 sounds awesome... until you remember that those are old games and There is no way in hell cyberpunk2077, gta6 and elder scrolls VI will be there. Or any upcoming top next gen game for that matter. Not to mention Nintendo keeps the games with a high price for way longer than any other console. Probably won’t see any good deals until switch 2.

Switch is basically a glorified “current gen but portable” + Nintendo first part games console.

Honestly it seems like Microsoft has the right idea here regarding portability. Sure it will be more expensive in the long run, but in exchange the fact that you won’t have to worry about hardware ever again is so worth it.

And it would be a blessing for us third worlders as we usually get fucked by taxes that make consoles more expensive.

At this point I am only interested in the thing for its backwards compatibility. It might be nice to have a box that does what the PS4 Pro would have if I'd gone with that model. That and support for the sizable library I'll still have when my fat PS2 finally eats it.

Other than that, I don't see much justification for spending my grownup vidya game money on it. For the price I could start putting cash aside for a new gaming rig (I have a six-year-old prebuilt, with a core i7, 32GB RAM and a GTX 760). California isn't moving on their censorship policy and a PC also lets you paint.

I fucking knew it was gonna be 2020, everyone is gonna want to launch then so they can kick off the new decade. Perfect date to coincide with all your future tech and shit. Get ready to hear next gen again for 3 years straight, or some new word they'll develop to mean the same thing.

Still though, I'm personally excited for the next decade, video game tech made quite some progress 2010-2020 so I have a good feeling for the 2020s.

2020 is what I predicted as well.

I can't wait for the next decade of gaming, I have a feeling photorealism will finally happen as we're already getting pretty dang close.

My only concern is I want some of the edge games used to have back, some of the old sex and violence, enough of this watered down SJW crap that say all women must be flat chested and weird faced.

That's the most exceptional comparison I tend to see when it comes to the topic of PC building.
The comparison for those reading along (which was not included in the quote) was that building a PC is easier than building with LEGO bricks.

It's served me well and I've taught a lot of people how to build computers over the last 20 years. The core of my teaching technique with most things is to make someone feel confident that they can do what they have set out to do. Of course there is complexity in building a computer, but it's not outside of what I would consider "everyday complexity" and I know that most people can absolutely build their first computer without help and be successful.

Should you have a experienced helper to guide you? Yeah! But we're not all that lucky. And I do think that most people habitually underestimate their own skill to such a degree that they are artificially limiting themselves. So that's why you will see me encourage someone that wants to build a computer. I believe that if you're going to spend the kind of money needed to get the parts, that a person will raise up to the task if they are able.

And yeah, some people probably shouldn't build their own computer. If you are truly that person, you probably won't do it no matter how much someone like me encourages you. But I'm not operating on the assumption that the person I am dealing with is an outlier (up or down), I am operating on the assumption that they're a pretty normal individual.

Anyone can build a computer, it's not that difficult. It's like playing with LEGO bricks. It has been my experience that most negative issues that arise during detail-oriented processes have less to do with a person's knowledge or mental ability and more to do with a person's skills or lack thereof when it comes to maintaining focus.

Good line of thought to bring up. Thanks for the morning exercise! :drink:

Because people understand on an innate level that owning a physical copy of something is different than having a temporary license to experience it. Vinyl Records are the zenith of that principle.

People realize - subconsciously - that ownership implies tangibility. Terms of Service does not.
That's what I'm afraid of, a future where you don't own what you purchase.

Okay listen old man, stadia is future. Yoo strem moosic, you streem muvies, why not gaems?! Google is great company that never cancels anything.

That just makes games more expensive to produce and not one bit more fun.

I'm hyped for ray tracing though. That actually makes development easier.

Agree, make more game not more blink animations. And disagree, raytracing isn't at that level yet, PS5/XboxOne2 will push more developers into it but I'm not sold on what AMD has shown when it comes to ray tracing on their hardware. Like that Crytek demo that suspiciously featured nothing but planar reflections...
