Part 3 was really good, the gauntlet of bosses made up for the lacking combat encounters of the first 2 parts. Nicely written story, too.

I sense a Walpurgis Night after this Ishmael banner

Regarding Ryoshu's seasonal ID, I feel like her story will just be Ryoshu never leaving / escaping the Spider's House, and turning into it's "Sharpest blade". Not sure how she'll play, but she's basically guaranteed to be Burn + Bleed (because of her ego, and rien's debuff). Maybe they'll just make her a berserker ID that starts off strong but gradually gets worse as she cuts up her memories? (obviously with some kind of way to recover because she has to be the hurr durr seasonal broken id)
Or negative coin.

I enjoyed it but it seemed very obvious to be an Intervallo and Canto story crammed together which I think held it back a little. The IDs for this season seem like they will have a lot of variety compared to what we got last time which is a nice change.

This chapter fucking sucks.
The encounters suck.
The music sucks.
The story sucks.

I can appreciate that ryoshu is the least interesting sinner but still.
The fuck were they doing for the last 7 months???

It was really good though I am fucking salty I had to use a continue since the final boss managed to beat me with only 61 health left solely due to his bullshit billion red coins. I don't know if there is even something I could have done, with 6 coin slots and the standard "Red coins against prescript target" so a single bad roll had him kill everyone. At least the game allowed me to continue and see the ending rather than spend another half an hour slowly grinding his massive healthbar. Should probably have used a more offensive team since he is built to nuke you eventually, but fuck it, I'll wait for Ryoshu's season ID for the extra voice lines and mechanics (probably should have taken an ID for her with dodge and cheese the boss that way).

Gameplay wise it was good, I like the smaller team making the battles less of a clusterfuck and allowing you to play with different IDs. The boss fights were entertaining and the partners didn't take all the spotlight, and instead you needed to work with them (or around them in Vergilius case who actually fucks you over consistently). There were some hype moments and they felt earned.

Plot wise the reveals didn't blow me away, a lot of them were stock anime plot lines, but they were good enough for the emotional beats. We got some cool moments for other characters which was nice. And the grand reveal was a bit lacking but makes sense in context. It felt more anime than Reddit, which thanks god for that.

Memes I thought of:

Red coins against prescript target
Just don't clash with the prescript target, he has 6 slots and you have 7 sinners in the fight. Other than that it's just matching damage types, i.e using blunt attacks against his blunt skills, and a damage race with Bleed and Burn being the fastest due to his weakness to them. Other than that you're trying to increase his Karmic Consequences gain since it makes him weaker.

I liked it a lot more in comparison to Canto 8, even with three less cutscenes I feel like the characters were a lot more realized. Xichun was nice in 8 and before, but I didn't feel like she was complete until the intervallo. I guess the characters I liked the most were Lin Daiyu and Kong Qiu. Even the Xue siblings felt underdeveloped while the Elders and Granny were just kind of there, same thing with Kong's disciples. The five nursefathers coming from preexisting factions helped as we already had a reference point to compare them to. They all seem remarkably dysfunctional wash ups by their factions standard.
  • Matthais seems the nicest but he's the most superficial and doesn't actually look out for his underlings when they aren't useful to him while also being altogether unreliable.
  • Valencia doesn't show mutual respect, hierarchy only matters to her to the extent it allows her to push other around. While she also needlessly mistreats her subordinates, emphasis of the needlessly part.
  • Rein seems hollow, lonely, and childish. Even by the standards of the Index. This comes across even if you don't know what their deal is since we have Sora by comparison.
Although I imagine Valencia doesn't come off as strongly since we never meet proper Thumb members in Limbus, while we don't have much prior comparison for Callisto due to so few people reading Leviathan. Even then, attaching them to a faction with an ideology acts as a sort of short hand and they all make striking impressions. The apprentices are all good as well, and the only one who didn't leave a strong impression at first, Ren, went out good. I ended up liking him a surprising amount when he decided to put his life on the line.
That said the game still really needs an ingame encyclopedia, especially since they're putting character details in passive page and status descriptions now.
  • The specific reason Matthais is disliked is because he killed his Big Brother and a fellow Sister in order to get his hands on his relic weapon. Which is temperamental and doesn't even like him. Although honestly I don't think the specific reason matters much in his case as he already come off as unreliable.
  • Callisto was a long time companion of Rein and was secretly working with the Index while being unfashionable. Which is why the Pinky doesn't like him. That one is funny.
  • Seemingly the reason why Rein was stripped of his cloak is that, he actually tried to stop Callisto from acting on the prescript's orders to kill his family and presumably turn them into a musical instrument, but stopped at the last moment.
I do have some speculation on the last one. I think Rein was punished for being indecisive, if he went on the mission and returned with vengeance or earnestly tried to save his family, he would have fulfilled the role of Roland. Either way he was punished, hunted down despite still being given prescripts, given a cursed weapon, mocked, and ultimately told to kill himself offhandedly by the god he devoted his entire life to.
Really I think that shows a petty, almost vindictiveness to the Will of the City. It isn't as all powerful or all knowing as it previously seemed with it's Yan plan working out, but when it fails it seemingly throws a fit. Although it did attempt to reuse Rein, even that ended up being a failure.
Edit: also, if you check Ryoshu's base sinner Identity, it looks like the Pinky has granted her the seat of Tiansha Star, seemingly without her input. With what Rein says it feels like they're going to try to entrap her into some bullshit.

I just realized something. What's with powerful older women and throwing pillars?

Who's next? Dias uses her (limbus) company as a pillar and throws it at papa kromer? Hermann throws a pillar and rides it like mercenary tao?

Funniest thing Rein literally means NOTHING he is not roland he has no family he has no emotion he has no agency he has nothing but the will of the city his agency isnt even his own. No wonder in his final moments he thought of waves. Rien is the ocean waves he builds sand castles and knock them down all due to the moon. It's no wonder he doesnt have any of the pm nen system no haki no shin no nen. He needs a calm mind and violent emotions but he has neither he is half baked as a person just like the books he reads. He is carried by the will of the city like his combat being carried by another fixer's style and a fucking relic

I gotta say some of these gimmicks are fucking infuriating

“What if we did the Queen of Hate fight except we combine it with the Red hood fight except we combine it with the scarecrow fight, and then we give you the two niggas whose best statuses are weak to this damage type—

But don’t worry cause you have this big ass shield you take %health damage on so you have no idea what your actual health is

Oh and here’s this new coin type, read nigga read because one of these green faggots only speaks in lies and the other just fucking kills you if you look at it funny

And you know for a fact there’s going to be a two sentence explanation for this shit but if you look it up that makes you gay so suffah Dante

Edit: it was in fact, just Vergilious fucking with my aggro. Thanks Vergy

That was a good Canto. Was it worth the delay? Probably not. Imo, they should have focused more on Ryoshu. Lots of fan service. Glad I read Distortion Detective a while back.

I'm a little upset at KJH at making me read PARAGRAPHS of passives for each fight and having the audacity at throwing flavor text as a means of rewarding my autism. I don't remember flavor text being present in skill descriptions before Canto VIII, but maybe I wasn't perceptive enough.

Hardest boss for me was The Ring. Dunno why, but I struggled a lot with it. I understood the gimmick, but man unbreakable coins that apply DOTs are fucking terrible.

Not a fan of this version of Pass On

Much like the humble cockroach, he will endure. Apparently they can survive like a week or something without their heads. Isn't that cool? Just about as cool as having a cockroach arm. I'm glad that they're giving him the spotlight. Too bad that it was done in Ryoshu's Canto. 10/10, would get PTSD from an apple again.

I did it again (and the shocking centipede after going over the turn limit) and this time I did it with only one sinner dead. secret was to do everything the same way only hoping Ryoshu doesn't fuck clashing with his Furioso which guaranteed my loss, kinda bullshit but shit is still hype. Oh and taking high clash only characters since sinking is gimped in the second half.

I really like how every nursefather is a different kind of a shitty parent and their apprentice is their logical conclusion:
* Thumb: Is classic abusive deadbeat "I was important once" parent. Her apprentice tries to justify his treatment but would eventually kill her out of pure spite.
* Index: Arm's length parent that shows some affection but never to any deep level. His apprentice is an emotional wreck, though the most functional and kind hearted of all the apprentices.
* Middle: The opposite over compensating dad that buys everything for the kid, but never sees him as better than a pet rather than a human being, and immediately retreats on any deep connection. His child is a bratty immature bully that's going to have a rough time when she realizes that love isn't purely material.
* Ring: Parent that sees their child as a project and tries to mold her to what he think should be. His apprentice is downright psychotic and self harming.
* Pinky: "You ruined my life" emotionally manipulative mother. Her apprentice has absolutely no sense of self.

Amazing Ryoshu became a somewhat functional adult, like the Mr. Burns meme of all the bad parents equaling themselves out:
1768556136319.png
Ryoshu: So you are saying I'm completely sane?
Dante: Dear god no, the slightest emotional turmoil could instigate a complete mental collapse.
Ryoshu: Completely sane...

“This time, this really will be a good envy team!! Look, there is crack Faust!”

Ryoshu season ID is going to be Matt. Mom in the trailer indicates this - which uh, is odd. Guess PM really liked that Ishmael baby picture.
I'm feeling Outis, Rodion's Middle Identity will probably be latter whenever we run into a relative of that granny she killed. Besides I don't think there's a very strong case for Ryoshu since Matt's equivalent doesn't have any defining features except for Ishmael mentioning that she's a woman. We tend to get matching IDs for free Seasonal EGOs. Middle Sinclair for Hex Nail Sinclair, and basically everyone last season got a matching ID for the EGO they got. That and I feel like Matthais' story of betrayal is something more likely for Outis to get.
Although Rodion, being a person who feels inferior, is also a good choice as Matt doesn't have Shin, Mang, or EGO and just uses pure grit plus a magic sword he killed someone over, which also feels very Rodion.

Right now I'm still thinking it's Outis since we tend to get matching IDs for free Seasonal EGOs. That and I feel like Matthais back story, of betrayal is something more likely for Outis to get.

If Outis gets a second season it 100% will be Valencina, who she isn't that different from on the regular. Rodion is 100% the over permitting mom. Though Gregor is also good Valencina candidate.

Rien is already confirmed Yin Sang.

Callisto and his apprentice would probably be Hong Lu or Meursault, unlikely Meur gets another thumb ID.

Lucio and Ren would probably be Heath and Sinclair.

Edit: Also about Smoke War 2, it seems to be against augmented humans/AI and adult Sinclair goes full on Total Robot Death in his fight. So maybe N Corp had a point all along.

And Honshou Gregor is a massive failure when you think about it.
