It’s lice. Specifically, the eggs they lay before they hatch into lice. It’s not an American word. I only know it because of Gygax referencing a “nits make lice” quote regarding orc and goblin children in D&D games (yet another thing the troons subverted).

Nit is absolutely a word in American English, it means lice eggs. It's where the term "nit-picking" comes from. Gygax was quoting a US army officer.
