Yeah, but being able to eat a whole pint of ice cream doesn't help instill any good long term habits. The binge and starve method might work in hunter gather societies, but it is not a great solution in modern society.

Also, I'm pretty sure we need not shift our concept of what a healthy weight is. I'm pretty sure most of the BMI charts are based off somewhat arbitrary data from 50+ years ago, "normal" body builds in humans shift much quicker then that. Plus there is a lot to be said about where weight is carried, and how much weight effects health vs. genetics....skinny people often have crappy lab work just like anyone else.

We are obsessed with the "pulling ourselves up by our own bootstraps" in the US, so the fact that most health is a genetic lottery is something we try to deny. Death is also something we refuse to accept, but there isn't anything really that tragic about people having major health issues in their late 70's and 80's....living more or less healthy until you pass in your sleep at a 100 is the outlier.

Of course I'm a commie and think we should be feeding kids breakfast and lunch at school (no food from home), and this should start in preschool. Kids adapt and will learn to eat a balanced and well portioned meal just like they learn how to read. I also think we should stop subsidizing corn and other goods that are processed into junk food. Plus we should sin tax the crap out of junk food and incentivize restaurants (and food corps.) to serve actual serving sizes.

Humans are programed towards the feast or famine style of eating, so if we are such innovate geniuses, we should be able to help create a system that helps insure we don't screw ourselves. Trying to say that counting calories and bringing food scales out to eat is a solution is just insane, so instead of being pre diabetic you develop OCD and anxiety (plus family and friends hate being around you). If you are a selfish proana leaning decently affluent individual, go ahead. Sadly the people who are struggle the most with obesity also struggle for access to food (and often are technically malnourished), so My Fitness Pal isn't the answer.

Also maybe people are just in a phase where "overweight" is normal (and gasp, healthy). I'm not trying to go all obesity pride, but I hear a lot of people spout that a smidgen of ED would be good for them or others. No, a fucking mentally health crisis isn't something to aspire to. Stop saying you would love to take up swimming again, but eww...no one who is obese should wear a bathing suit....maybe after you skip thanksgiving and christmas (frankenfood meal shakes only from here on out), plus you've been forcing yourself to go on fitbit walks at night (got to get your crawl paced steps in even if it means your kid doesn't get a bedtime story). Plus even though the doctor said you are perfectly healthy, you would give anything to be your sister-in-law that has severely high blood pressure, but can eat anything and fit into size 5 teenager jeans (she is so lucky to have churn's disease). Good thing you got your daughter a food scale and food diary for christmas, you don't want her to feel weird about her upper arms in prom photos come spring.

Normies got a running calorie tracker in their head. Not particularly necessary for the average person to actually weigh out/myfitnesspal 200kcal worth of peanut butter every day for the rest of their life to maintain a perfectly acceptable weight and healthy leanness.

Anyway, what's with the derail? There are plenty of blatantly cuckoo orthorexic/anorexic beasts out there which transcend their illness into being malignant. Probably should be a general fitness thread to keep track of everyone who is obviously going nuts from maintaining a 6% bodyfat for comps.

i think weighing one's food is fucking nuts, but counting calories is rather normal, all things considered.

it's the people who are already batshit crazy that take something like counting calories to the extreme.

yes, counting every item you eat or using a food scale is weird (trying to keep a your 3 meals between 500-700 calories isn't insane, but that shouldn't require an app after a little while)

more people are weird with food then not at this point in time...at least where I live (my spouse has multiple friends that use mustard as salad dressing or eat everything with chopsticks, how quirky and disordered)

please ignore the insanity of my earlier post....waiting at the DMV can do bad things to one's mental stability

Pro Ana websites have been around for more than a decade and they haven't changed much in style.

It's really not a movement.

Everything about these websites serves the purpose of keeping the user focused on and obsessed with Anorexia deliberately to help their weight loss.
The logic behind this is: the more and extremer I obsess about Ana, the more successful I will be at losing weight.

Whatever they say is less a message to the world and more a message to keep themselves "focused" and it's less an actual, thoughtful statement and more about the desired effect on a Pro Ana follower

Since collective support helps that goal, communities were made. They seem cult-like (and they are) and draw in vulnerable people but I really see Pro Ana as a self-talk.

What continues to amaze me is that the myproana forums are full of posts of people asking "why am I feeling like shit on my 300 calorie a day diet? Ps. Don't tell me to just eat more." Do these people actually think the body can just keep functioning normally while receiving next to no energy at all for weeks on end? Those are the effects of starvation, honey, and no, supplements and vitamins won't help you one bit.

I recently ran across Eugenia Cooney. 1.2 million youtube followers and deathly sickly skinny. I am shocked there is nothing on Encyclopedia Dramatica or here about her. I guess that means she isn't a bad person. But you would think with 1.2 million youtube followers she could afford a few McDonald's double stacks.

I don't know how she's still alive. I thought she would have either died or have been court ordered into a treatment center by now. The situation is much of the same with her but worse. The latest video with her mother it appears she's gone down even more (or just lost more muscle).

The money she gets she spends on her clothing and other hot topic trinkets. I don't even believe she eats solid food, maybe ensure or something but it appears she's entirely food phobic.

as a regular size person, i also find calorie counting weird because i've never had to put in effort to be this weight, but i realize that other people grew up differently than me and thus started out bigger. also, you can be regular sized and eat normal food! it's not hard!

pro-ana boards love to talk about how they're totally pro recovery, which is the biggest lie i've ever heard.
 
I was a part of the proana forums and still technically have an account, lol. For posterity, I'll pour in some information I had as a regular, warning for possible powerleveling??

80% of the users on the forums have diagnosed eating disorders on the site, at least in my experience. The other 20% are undiagnosed and tend to never discuss if they have an eating disorder or not, and people who come on thinking they can use an eating disorder as a dieting fad and promptly get bullied off the site.

In my experience, anorexics are usually frigid cunts. Of course, it's more the perfectionist obsession that is their eating disorder, I'm sure with mental health treatment they are nice people. They constantly compete more than everyone else, and act better than everyone who's more attractive- but god forbid weighs what a human adult should. If they come across a morbidly obese person, it sinks into some serious name-calling and mocking that would put the typical kiwifarms' member to shame. The threads like those are anything in the thinspo section- ranging from typical meanspo to posting pictures of anyone they view as not the perfect weight (which, would be no weight at all.)

Bulimics/EDNOS/everyone else is usually much more accepting, but threads often turn into crying circle jerks, and self abuse circle jerks. The bulimia/ednos section purge stories are gold because the gambit for it ending up insanely gross is high. i.e: shitting yourself or almost shitting yourself in public to the extent that mentioning it is pretty common.

50/50 of the site is people recovering as people actively supporting the lifestyle, but people who believe it's the right choice are the minority.

The worst/best irl horror stories I've ever witnessed first hand is the fact that, recently an RIP thread went up because actual members of the forum have passed away before (key word, members as in multiple.) A member no longer being able to shit normally from damaging their stomach so bad from laxative purges. Several instances where weirdos came onto the site to offer to pay girls to film themselves binging and puking, and smaller weirdos who regularly stalk the girls in the forums and actively try to get underage girls to send nudes and/or kill themselves via baiting. Several girls have pretended to be sicker than they are for attention, stealing photos from people who just have medical problems or people recovering from eating disorders they can find online. Also several irl gore threads that might have been deleted, and got started because several people used for thinspo actively and brutally mutilated themselves (not like, cutting, like permanent muscle damage weirdness.)

Lots of the girls are self aware and actively make fun of the proana community.
This a pretty decent example after Anorexic Trump became a thing.

The reason most people with eating disorders don't calorie count is because, psychiatrists discourage it because they very easilucome obsessed with the numbers/consuming anything. If they aren't already. It's common practice to hide calories from recovering ed folks. The same reason they are also often weighed backwards, just so they aren't given such an easy reason to go back to purging/restricting.

Also, the skeleton picture may be a joke but bonespo is a super popular thing. Like, a lot of girls want to be their goal weight, or die trying. Mostly, die. inb4 ow the edge

1. It's difficult but, in my experience since that's the best I can speak on, doctors are really helpful and nice. There's a lot of issues but all the women I've met with ED's are post-recovery and struggle with their body image- but like actually eat and are fine. The big issue with the pro-ana community and why it gets so much hate (besides being gross and funny) is it prevents people from getting help, or at least sticking to it.
2. Yep, most doctors explain/consider eating disorders a type of ocd or an addictive behavior. So, you are right on the money.
3. A lot of the people who are adamantly actual pro-ana are freaks, so the government could force them, but it's unlikely they'd intervene to that level until they end up in the hospital.

4. Again, these folks actively talk about shitting their pants and eating out of the garbage. Even if it's sad, it's still really funny.

You seem to misunderstand the nature of the actual "disorder" in "eating disorder". It's not that someone is eating with chopsticks -- it's that they purposefully do it to attempt to slow or reduce their eating with the hope of maintaining a lower weight. The intention is what causes the disorder. Just as how someone can calorie count and restrict to reduce weight at a reasonable rate as an obese person, one you become overly obsessive and it interferes with your quality of life that's when it strays into disorder territory, even irrespective of weight.

It really isn't about rationality, which is why people with eating disorders adopt such retarded behaviors at times such as gorging yourself with water and making your food inedible through cayanne or eating only a single food item a day or purging through salt water or body-checking once every thirty minutes.

You adopt a behavior to fulfill a goal, you get a tangible physical result, you see your old body as somehow unacceptable for purely arbitrary aesthetic reasons, you continue the behavior because you fear that not only if you stop the behavior you will return to your old body but also that you will continue sliding because the nature of eating disorder recovery almost always necessitates gaining more weight than you begun with, which is a scary thought when you've conditioned yourself that anything other than your ideal is unacceptable.
