Private Eye has caused controversy after teasing a front cover featuring a transphobic joke.

The image, which was posted to the satirical magazine’s Facebook account, showed a picture of Batman and Robin with the caption ‘Robin Comes Out.’

Speech bubbles on the image show Robin saying ‘Batman, I’m bisexual,’ with Batman replying ‘That’s nothing – one of our enemies identifies as a penguin.’

As well as being a reference to the comic book villain Penguin, it’s been pointed out that the ‘joke’ is a variation of the transphobic ‘attack helicopter’ meme, which mocks the idea of self-identification when it comes to one’s gender or sexuality.

Though Private Eye is known for its contrarian satire, many readers clearly see this latest image as unnecessarily offensive. The post has been widely shared and criticised on social media, with one person tweeting ‘nice to see private eye recycling the same attack helicopter joke.’

‘Lazy. Insensitive. Dismissive. Don’t print it,’ another person commented on Facebook.

Meanwhile, one reader suggested an alternative caption, which read:

‘Batman, I’m bisexual.’
‘Cool, Robin. One of our enemies identifies as a penguin. How fab it is that everyone can be their authentic selves these days.’
‘He’s still evil though, right?’
‘Yes, Robin. LGBTQI+ people can be superheroes, arch enemies, or anything in between – just like everybody else.’
In recent years a growing number of ostensibly liberal publications in the UK have promoted ‘gender critical’ arguments, which supporters of trans rights argue fails to accept the basic idea that trans women are women, and seeks to deny trans people the agency to determine their own identity.

It's transparently obvious that the same people having anxiety attacks and calling suicide hotlines because of a throwaway "identifies as a penguin" joke are the same people claiming "white fragility" exists. The irony is not lost on anyone but themselves.

Private Eye is a very liberal magazine that spent the last five years insulting half the country for voting Brexit. I'm not sad to see the circular firing squad claim its latest victim.
You are correct and it is what made me stop giving a shit about it for a while. It used to be fairly good about actually being even handed about its targets but it fell hard into the Brexit whining.

On the other hand Private Eye is good at catching cases that go unnoticed by many others and usually is reasonably well researched. If they're over Brexit and prepared to get back on form then I am willing to start buying some of its work.

this joke about troon delusions isn't built on, doesn't need to be built on that old joke that did the same, and nor does it necessarily recall it, it's the delusions themselves that are the root of jokes.

Hack journo faggots imo, This joke could have existed without the old one and if the 2 jokes were on an org chart they'd be laterals with a 6'2 supervisor named Alyssa who's known to walk around work with a throbbing 10" hard on

This isn't an "attack helicopter" joke. It IS a similar kind of joke but it's not the raw absurd copypasta mocking otherkin that is the attack helicopter joke. Anyone who claims the joke isn't funny and "transphobic" is lying for clout online. The whole staying power of the attack helicopter copypasta is the fact it's fucking insane wacky bullshit but also kinda cool and badass compared to "Oh I'm a wolf or deer or some shit like that uwu".

I like how this should in every respect be a dead meme, but it continues to exist because fags keep getting triggered over it
They keep getting triggered by it because they still haven't thought of a decent comeback, even after all these years.

And really, according to their beliefs, there just isn't one and there never can be. Didn't a survey of Google employees reveal one person who officially "identified as an ornate building" in the company records?

Was that person being sincere? If so, isn't that close enough to attack helicopter?

‘Batman, I’m bisexual.’
‘Cool, Robin. One of our enemies identifies as a penguin. How fab it is that everyone can be their authentic selves these days.’
‘He’s still evil though, right?’
‘Yes, Robin. LGBTQI+ people can be superheroes, arch enemies, or anything in between – just like everybody else.’
My authentic self wants to put this fucking idiot's head into a toilet.

How is it a "basic idea" that a bunch of fringe lunatics be allowed to decide to re-define the words "men" and "women"?

Couldn't I equally say that they fail to accept the basic idea that trans women are NOT women?

Have they provided a single reasonable argument to support their position, that a "liberal publication" might be able to accept?

I was once speaking to someone IRL who was all, "trans women are women" and they honestly couldn't get their head around me saying, "Yes but that doesn't mean cis women aren't their own separate group." They agreed that bathrooms, sports and everything were all separated in the past due to biological sex. Yet trans women and women so there for those spaces should be for all women. "But cis biological women are still a thing." They couldn't get past, "but trans women are women." It was so strange.

It is frightening how much of this is total ideological indoctrination. It seemed like trying to talk to a young earth creationist about evolution. The earth is 5000 years old is an indisputable fact in their mind. They may agree about evolution being a thing, but stuck on the claim the earth is 5000 years old. Can't get past that.

It was about the otherkin menace, who continue to infiltrate lefty politics and weasel their way into legitimacy via that trojan horse that is LGBT politics.
I've wondered before whether otherkin is the next thing they're going to try to mainstream, imagine it being politically incorrect to simply say that fiction isn't reality.

I remember seeing a clip on TV once in the early 2000s of otherkin type people obsessed with the pen and paper RPG Werewolf: The Apocalypse, I remember this one part where this neckbeard was moved to tears by this rousing speech by the leader of the group, I remember being highly disturbed lol, wish I could find that clip online.

"'Batman, I’m bisexual.’

‘He’s still evil though, right?’
‘Yes, Robin. LGBTQI+ people can be superheroes, arch enemies, or anything in between – just like everybody else.’"

Humans don't talk like this. You're gay robots and need to be dismantled.

Why is it that trannies, who are heckin valid and not all mentally ill in the least, are so very easily offended?
Not just when it comes to jokes at their expense, either.
I've found the overwhelming majority of them to be utterly humorless and joyless with hair-trigger, umbrageous personalities.
Almost like they have narcissistic personality disorder and just want the rest of the world miserable if they themselves can't be happy.
They're unhappy, by literal definition. What's gender dysphoria but an uncontrolled discontentment with your being and its surroundings?

I remember seeing this in last month's issue and I thought it was pretty tame. Batman is essentially telling Robin that no-one cares about him coming out, as there are clearly more bizzare and wacky things happening in the Batman universe.

Besides, people who think the Penguin in the most transphobic Batman villan have clearly never heard of Mrs Manface.

Private eye is fairly well balanced and have far more interigty than many other outlets. The favour neither party, constantly shit-talking both labour, tories and 3rd parties. They have a dedicated page for corruption / money wasting done by local councils, as well as keeping a close eye on national spending projects.

Sure they harp on about brexit a bit, but in all fairness it has been handled disasterously. And if you think Boris Johnson is a God who can do no wrong and Brexit will have no problems whatsoever then this probably isn't the magazine for you either. The humor is decent but geared for a middle age to older audience. I'd still highly recommend.
