I half assed it and only grew some potato plants that got eaten by a

stick 'em in the ground, stick 'em in a bag, 'ell, you can even stick chunks in the compost and they'll grow.
in all actuality if youre somewhere where it gets cold in the winter then planting them in fall for an earlier harvest works really well. you'll them in the ground when the ground is cold enough for them to hibernate, but obviously before the ground freezes. if not then get them in the ground as early as possible in spring. thye'll grow in any half decent soil. keep 'em watered. that's literally it.

I have good luck with the above ground bag pots for my taters.
I like them because I don't have to dig around to find them. I just lay out a tarp and dump the pot out onto it. And then just pick all the taters out while I shovel the dirt back into the pot.
I either rotate out the dirt or Plant something else every few years to avoid the potato diseases.
I always start from seed potatoes , youkon gold and Pontiac red are my favorites.
I like growing them because the deer leave them alone.
