Pope Francis said Sunday that Islam could not be equated with terrorism and warned Europe was pushing its young into the hands of extremists.

"It's not true and it's not correct (to say) Islam is terrorism," he told journalists aboard the papal plane during the return journey from a trip to Poland.

"I don't think it is right to equate Islam with violence".

Francis defended his decision not to name Islam when condemning the brutal jihadist murder of a Catholic priest in France in the latest of a string of recent attacks in Europe claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.

"In almost every religion there is always a small group of fundamentalists. We have them too."

"If I have to talk about Islamic violence I have to talk about Christian violence. Every day in the newspapers I see violence in Italy, someone kills his girlfriend, another kills his mother-in-law, and these are baptised Catholics."

The pontiff was speaking after Muslims attended Catholic mass in churches around France on Sunday in solidarity and sorrow following the murder of the priest, whose throat was slit at the altar of his church.

In an echo of remarks made during his five-day trip to Poland for a Catholic youth festival, Francis said religion was not the driving force behind the violence.

"You can kill with the tongue as well as the knife," he said, in an apparent reference to a rise in populist parties fuelling racism and xenophobia.

He said Europe should look closer to home, saying "terrorism... grows where the God of money is put first" and "where there are no other options".

"How many of our European young have we left empty of ideals, with no work, so they turn to drugs, to alcohol, and sign up with fundamentalist groups?" he asked.

Problem is, the radicals ARE trying to equate Islam with their ideology of "Kill 'em all."

Unless a reformation for Muzzies takes place, it will keep being thought of as a blood-for-blood cult.

He's not wrong about the Catholic fundamentalists though. Lets not forget about the sedevacantist body count.

The Pope said:
"I don't think it is right to equate Islam with violence".
Sure. In the same way that it's not right to equate ski-masks with armed-robbery. Islam is a religion of peace. Ski-masks are for keeping your face warm while skiing. The problem is the same in both cases; you have some seriously fucked up people misusing both to their advantage, and people are smart enough to recognize the correlation.

I'm an Anglican so the Pope means nothing to me. This new Pope really seems like a "say nice things but do nothing" kind of guy, which is a shame because I really liked him when he was first appointed. He seem to be following the trend of Christian leaders taking a very soft stance on Islam, even as it encroaches further and further on their territory.
Now, I'm a fan of the Crusades. I've studied them and wrote a few essays on them for my History course at university. 900 years ago, what's going on in Europe now would have been more than reason enough to launch a Crusade to retake lost land and avenge the slain. What do we have nowadays? Oh, the killers of an innocent priest were victims too :'(

They were not victims. They were evil and they faced man's justice so they could stand before God and receive judgement.

I don't recall any Catholics who binge eat kebab meat, so, let that sink in...
Except for the priests who went into to the seminary to control their love for kabob meat and wound up overdosing on it, anyway.:tomgirl:
I am really not too enthusiastic to lend credibility to an individual, organization, or religion that covered up child sexual abuse and rape until it became too transparent to hide. People believe the pope is a progressive and loving individual, and to that I say "he is just like the rest of them".

Disagree with me all you want, but I actually agree with what he has to say. As a Muslim who is from and has been living in a Muslim-majority country all his life, I have known many people who live normal lives, who don't give a shit if other people aren't Muslim and are Muslims. These refugees however are disgusting, primitive people who come from equally primitive countries which also happen to be third-world nations as well. When these people learn how to fucking behave in a different country, only then should they immigrate.

There's nothing actually wrong with what he says in that article, but at the same time modern Islam is much much more violent than modern Christianity and Judaism in aggregate. It's no surprise that parts of the EU are having second thoughts about importing more Muslims in general when so many are prone to violence in the name of Islam the second they become dissatisfied with their lives.

I agree with what he says about fundies in another religions, but it's easy for him to say that Islam is a religion of peace when he lives in a walled citadel with high security and not in the many no-go zones of Europe.
