You basically hits my every thought about the games right on the head. The Wild Area is the only really graphically lacking part of the overworld, the regular routes and towns are great looking. Hell when I'm doing online battles I'll fly to Ballonlea just for the atmosphere and backdrop while I'm waiting for a match. The graphics are not nearly as bad as people say they are with places like the mines, and mushroom forests actually looking very beautiful, and being some of best looking areas in the entire franchise. The game does have a lagging issue, and some of animations are kind of jank, but for most part, these are the best looking mainline Pokemon games we've had so far imo.
I liked some of the gym leaders, especially Piers because not only did we finally get a Dark-type gym leader, we got one who's also a rockstar. I also really liked Raihan. I don't care if he's literally just a human Charizard. He's cool, and clearly has fun with what he's doing. Despite the fact that's he's the Dragon-type gym leader, he's still a really laidback who just wants to just battle, and have a good time.
I think the Gen VIII gyms are by far my favorite rendition of them. Gym battles, especially against the leaders, are major events within the world of Pokemon and have significant meaning for the trainer taking the challenge. The fact that they have these massive sports stadiums with huge crowds really does a good job of conveying that and makes it feel like it's actually a big deal within the world, rather than just being a big building in the town.
