Why single out girafarig, of all Pokemon? It actually has a fairly neat idea as it's concept - it's a living palindrome.
I would have preferred if they kept the beta look of it rather than give it that stupid ball with a happy face for a tail

Also instead of Normal/Psychic (Final) or Normal/Dark (Beta) they could have just cut out Normal entirely and made it Psychic/Dark. Not that I have an issue with Normal type in general (it's my 2nd favorite type), but it's stats suck for a type that has no resistances and only 1 immunity.

Least they could do is bring it back via an evolution or by making it possible to breed it from Girafarig as an alternate form when Girafarig holds a special item, like a dark crystal or something.

Hell, even if it is a gimmick, a Gigantamax form of Girafarig with two massively tall giraffe heads would be cool IMO.
At this point, even hoping for a gigantamax or mega evo seems unlikely. Personally I would like the base design a lot more if both heads had long necks and sort of intertwined. Kind of hard to picture it though without looking messy.

I've decided to try my hand at a Nuzlocke, although it'll probably be a test run of sorts until I get my own 3DS (so I wouldn't care if my brother overwrote this file after I give it back), but I wanna document it anyway. I'm doing it on the Silver version since that's the one I've played the shit out of even after the battery drained, and outside of being forced to just catch a single Pokémon in every new area/route, doesn't feel much different from how I usually play. I wasn't confident in myself to make more personalized rules, though, so it's just the basic level atm (although is it "cheating" if I enter a new route but the first encounter was a Pokémon I already have? I honestly don't want duplicates mainly to avoid that temptation of "replacing" a fallen comrade with a "replica", but I thus far haven't caught the second Pokémon I've encountered over a duplicate).

To help me remember this is supposed to be a Nuzlocke run, I've named the rival "Locke" lol but posting it here should help me remember it, too.

I am curious, though: Do cave levels count as new areas? Like Dark Cave has four entrances to four different areas you can come across throughout the game. If you catch a Pokémon in the south side of Dark Cave, does that mean you cannot catch any more Pokémon from Dark Cave even if you just reached Blackthorn City for the first time? Same goes for Union Cave, the deeper level of the cave isn't available to you until you get Surf, but if you've already caught a Pokémon in the upper level, you cannot catch any more (think the Lapras doesn't count either if you don't use Repels?), right? I just want to make sure even though I've caught a Magikarp upon first entering Union Cave.

So thus far at Azalea, this is my team; I had a Rattata (Nicky) in the party, but I don't see myself using him much, and also I want to hatch Togepi for the PokéDex so had to make room (won't be using Togepi). I also don't see myself using Gastly after a while due to not being able to trade:

Chikorita (Lyce)
Hoothoot (Owlicia) *runs away laughing*
Gastly (Gaston)
Jigglypuff (Hilary)
Magikarp (Maggie)

Jigglypuff was one I've actually wanted for this Nuzlocke, I literally squee'd when she popped up, so got lucky with that 5% encounter rate. Didn't realize it's actually a pain to raise at first, though, due to having only Sing and maybe Defense Curl (caught her at level 5). Magikarp was always worse, though. So slow to raise.

Do cave levels count as new areas?
As a general rule in Nuzlockes, the rule is a catch a single pokemon for each uniquely named area: for example, you can't catch Lapras until you get into the deeper parts of Union Cave, but if you've already got a pokemon in there, you can never get Lapras. Similarly, Dark Cave is all one area as well, and any routes with disjointed entrances. Most gift pokemon are encountered in areas where other pokemon other catchable (I believe the only one that is in Johto is the Tyrogue you can get in Mt Mortar from the Karate King), but those are generally an exception to the one mon per route rule. Also remember, Lake of Rage is its own area, use a repel before you approach Gyarados to get a guaranteed level 30 pokemon with gold stars.

If you're doing a basic ruled Nuzlocke just overgrind and overlevel to win.

Otherwise, might be better off adding more restrictions such as do not overlevel the gym leader's maximum levelled Pokemon and/or do not use items in battles to make the challenge actually challenging imo.

Wait, does the Lapras count as a static encounter, or it doesn't because it's optional unlike the Snorlax in front of Diglett's Cave?

Alright, was just making sure.

I'm debating. Let's Go Eevee and Shield? Or pass
If you want more interaction with your Pokemon and really don't care about balance, Eevee.
If you want the best competitive training experience you can get, Shield.

If you care about the story, look into fangames.

Because a lot of people have been complaining about/feeling weird about Johto recently, I actually came across this recently.

It's worth a watch through if you're feeling iffy about Johto.

I like the lazy designs because they make me think of a Japanese dude at 3am just watching TV for inspiration and saying "I don't know, it's- it's a candle. It's a candle with eyes. It evolves into a Victorian-era street lamp and then a chandelier. I don't- it's just- I don't care. It's fine."

and i laugh
How dare you call the litwick line's design lazy! I demand that you fight me IRL!

It's not even on par with the peak of design quality of a rock with arms that is Geodude. Gen1 for lyfe!

On a non-sarcastic note, I love the Litwick family designs, some the best from gen 5 IMO.

The guy summed up the negatives in a quarter of the time KingK's video did lol.

Like I agree that those negatives have hurt the generation, especially on a technical level and definitely in hindsight, but it's still gonna take a lot to change my mind on Johto as a region. (Also, did Azumarill really suck that hard back then? Azumarill was my MVP in Silver and was my very first Pokémon I raised to level 100, I adore my aqua rabbit so very much. I wish the battery drain hadn't been a big issue, I could've been able to go back and look at my team to make sure I'm not remembering things wrong because I swear Azumarill was the queen of my team. But yeah, was really bullshit Dark-type Pokémon were post-game only.) If anything, I think what I truly love the most about it is the lore and that's been a constant given throughout the years every time I think back and return to Johto. I have my Pokémon favorites from the gen, but the region itself was so much different compared to Kanto. There was more life to it, I felt, and the magical moment of first walking into Ecruteak City and hearing the somber tune of its history and then learning about its myths was what got me to believe Johto was something special. (This was before or after solving the Kabuto puzzle, can't recall.)

Keep in mind you can bullshit basically anything through the story if you level it hard enough.

Azumarill's BST at the time was 410, mostly oriented in it's defenses. It's attack stats are both 50 (later special would get a +10 boost), while it's defenses are 100/80/80. That's about the BST range of most mid-stage starters. And plenty of pokemon with higher BST from Johto (Mismagius, Sneasel, Gligar) would later receive evolutions.

Lapras matches or beats it in every stat, has coverage and a stat spread that compliment each other (BoltBeam and more with higher special attack) and can offer team support or crowd control that Azumarill can't. Azumarill was just a very standard Bulky Water - perhaps the most overrepresented archetype in the game - until the various buffs turned it into a Huge Power Aqua-Jetting Monstrosity.

Silver Nuzlocke update:

I'm at Goldenrod, and am just grinding for now, but I don't think it'll be enough. My party right now:

Jigglypuff (♀ lvl 20)
Bayleef (lvl 21)
Gastly ( lvl 21)
Gyarados (♀ lvl 20)
Noctowl (♀ lvl 20)
Slowpoke (♀ lvl 17)

I had a thought that for Whitney, I was going to open on Clefairy with Gastly, put it to sleep and then inflict Nightmare before switching out to Jigglypuff for Rollout--maybe spam Defense Curl or use the X Defend before Rollout. Miltank would come out and then just rely on luck. I've thought about using Disable, too, although Stomp will hurt.

But I don't think it's going to be enough without more grinding, and I don't think Jigglypuff will be faster even if I got her to level 25 or so.

I have a female Bellsprout, though. I've thought maybe I can grind her to level 20 or so (maybe 24 to get Acid as a Weepinbell) so I can switch out to her once Miltank comes out and use Stun Spore. I think she'll be my sacrifice so I can get Jigglypuff out there for a Rollout. Or, if instead of Jigglypuff, I could grind Nidoran♀ (would've been Geodude instead, but it's unfortunately male) to learn Tail Whip and send her out after Paralysis to lower Miltank's Defense or just spam Double Kick. I think Weepinbell will still be a sacrifice unless Miltank got a paralysis to switch out to a fresh Rollout. I could also grind my female Ekans to a higher level to when she learns Glare and teach her Dig (or have my Slowpoke be taught Dig, but she'd be slow) to fuck with Rollout. I still have an Ether to restore that PP.

Thoughts or suggestions?

The safest and most effective strategy you could do is putting the Clefairy to sleep and setting up on it in my opinion. If you do not have the Hard Stone - which I think you can get before you defeat Whitney - then you could get it on a Thursday from Arthur and then equip it to Jigglypuff to buff Rollout.
Fuck, I'd have to wait another week for that, then. Honestly forgot where Arthur of Thursday was.

Yeah, Bayleef has Reflect. I suppose I'd have to get rid of Growl which I thought perhaps lowering Miltank's Attack will help. As much as I like the Chikorita line, I was honestly hoping for either Cyndaquil for Speed or Totodile, but my Trainer ID didn't match up for it.

Had a thought, too, that if I stick with Ekans (it'll be an Arbok on level 23 with Glare, just checked), I could pump it with X Attack in between Digs. I kinda suspected I'd get a Pokémon in my party up to level 25 before taking her on, anyway. Getting Leaf Stone through Mystery Gift sounds neat, but it's a rare occurrence even if I did it to wait out until Thursday. I'll still try it out, though.

Plain Badge get.

I chose to open up with Arbok from the start and after a quick Glare just pumped her with three X Defends while Clefairy spammed Metronone, Double-Slap, and one Mimic to get Glare. Was much more annoying than Miltank since I spent most of the turns keeping Arbok in good health, so it took a Glare, two Leers, two Digs, and a Bite to take it down. Stomp most likely would've kicked my ass much more than Rollout, but the X Defends kept that from being worse.

I think I'll keep Arbok in the party for a bit longer. Maybe use her to sweep Morty's gym, I dunno.
