So, anyone get to keep/lose any life long friends along the way?
Boy do I have a powerlevelly story for you guys.
Soooooo tell me, kiwis - have you ever found a shiny legendary as a kid?
See, it's one thing to encounter a shiny as a kid - it's a great feeling, but I assure you nothing is more overwhelming to a 12 year old kid than finding a shiny legendary. It is a feeling that you'll most likely never forget - one of amazement at finding something incredibly rare, but also one of great fear because of how hard legendaries in older games were to catch. Chromium was no different.
I was trying to catch Registeel in Emerald on the morning I encountered Chromium. It didn't take me very long to realise what was going on after resetting the game after my last attempt resulted in the Registeel committing seppuku - Registeel's colours in 3rd gen are kind of subtle, but not unnoticeable. My jaw dropped when I saw the blueish-green golem slide across my screen, followed by the sparkle animation. I freaked out right there and then - I'd already used my Master Ball on Rayquaza like a noob so all I could rely on was the catch rate being generous enough to let me claim my prize. A Timer Ball ended the fight - and I mashed the save button as fast as I could before the batteries in my GBA died. I named him Chromium after my favourite metal in the periodic table and to me Chromium was the best thing ever.
Fast forward to when Diamond and Pearl come out - I wanted to start over on Emerald for old time's sake and decided to transfer Chromium and a few other shinies to Diamond so I could keep them safe. Chromium became a driving force during the Battle Island areas of the game. He was a force to be reckoned with and I planned to bring him to 5th gen when the time came. But as it goes in life, this was never to happen. I made the mistake of bringing my copy of Diamond to a high school that was a shithole one day - you can imagine what happened. Some kid stole my copy of the game and I never saw it again. It broke my heart to lose my squad but losing Chromium made me hurt most of all. My closest partner was gone - and knowing people in general, I wouldn't be surprised if that kid erased the file he was on at some point.
But that isn't where the story ends.
Last July I finally decided it was time to return to 3rd gen games and do a legendary shiny hunt. No prizes for guessing which legendary I chose. About three days in I noticed one of the Registeels coming across the screen is a little greener than usual. I'd come prepared - I tossed the Master Ball without hesitation and the job was done and dusted in seconds. I felt like that 12 year old kid again for a moment - but this time more elated to know that I'd gotten to see an old friend again, even if his nature and stats were different.
You fucking bet I named him Chromium.
TL;DR: I caught a shiny Registeel when I was 12, named him Chromium, and he became my favourite partner. Then some kid stole the copy of Diamond I'd transferred him to, then earlier this year I caught another shiny Registeel and also named it Chromium. The End. I will stop sperging now.
