So wait.
The whipped cream is Fairy.
The smokestack is Fairy.
The pastel unicorn with the colorful mane isn't.

What the fuck even is the theme for Fairy
Psychic and Fairy are essentially the same thematically since they both focus on the supernatural and folklore. I suppose Fairy, whose name is a 1 to 1 translation across regions, focuses specifically on ideas of magic and nature (ie the moon, light etc). Psychic by comparison, which is called the "Esper" type Japan giving a broader spectrum to it's application, focuses on psychokinesis, mutations, and emotion.

As for why the pastel pink pony is psychic is beyond me.

I wonder if all these Camp scenes with two Pokémon means you can breed your own eggs wherever. They have been doing a lot of “hey look, two Pokémon at the same time. And they get along” in the trailers.

So about the "18 gyms" remark, Game Informer magazine has a segment on Sword and Shield which I'm currently looking through to see if there's really anything of worth to pull out. The 18 gyms quote is in it:

"According to director Shigeru Ohmori, the gyms are split into a system resembling major and minor sports leagues. 'There are 18 different types of gyms in the story, and depending on the version, which gyms are in the minor league and which gyms are in the major league are different. For example, in Sword, the fighting-type gym will be in the major league, but in Shield, the ghost-type. The idea is that every year, the Galar region is playing and which gyms make it into the minor league versus the major league changes.'"

You know what would've been neat? If the gyms were all on a roulette that changes per game play. There really wouldn't have needed to be a version-exclusive gym in the "major" league, you could've had a 1 in 18 chance to have fought against the Ghost gym leader in Sword at any given point in the story, be it in the minors or the majors.

But I'm also not a sports sperg so I have no idea exactly how they're laying this out, if the first four gyms are what's considered the minor league and the last four are the major league, or if there's actually going to be 16 badges in total, but the first half of the game's story is the minor league story chapter.

Like you said, the theme for the Psychic/Esper type is mutations. According to the official site, it states that: "Galarian Ponyta have been found in a certain forest of the Galar region since ancient times. It is said that they were exposed to the overflowing life energy of the forest over many generations, and this is why their appearance became unique in this region". So, if what you said is true, then giving it psychic typing was a pretty fitting choice.

And then you have Alolan Raichu who became Psychic because, pancakes... No really, that's the actual explanation they give for the type change.

I still will find it really weird if Rapidash doesn't end up being fairy. Unicorns are literally the most fey creature I can think of besides fairies.
It wouldn't surprise if its second typing will be flying because the Galar Rapidash will most defiantly have wings.

I remember the 3rd Gen getting a limited dex, as well as the 5th. What's the big deal?

Gen 3 couldn’t transfer Pokemon from the previous two gens due to technological limitations. However there was FRLG to help fill in the gaps. Gen 5 lets you transfer old Pokemon once you beat the main story.

With SwSh Pokemon who aren’t in the dex don’t exist in the coding at all.

From what I've heard, a lot of people complained about Gen 3 not allowing you to transfer from Gens 1 and 2. Unfortunately I don't know much about this since this was from back in 2003-2004, but it seems the backlash was massive even back then. Gen 5 is largely criticised for B/W's very limited PokéDex, but it didn't get much backlash because you can still have all previous 493 Pokémon through transfer, and B2/W2 expanded the Regional PokéDex. This is completely different, because this time, the Pokémon are literally not coded into the game, whereas for every other game, every single Pokémon could be obtained in at least one way, including cheating.

I still don't understand the anger over Unova's initial "new mons only" thing at the time. Right after you become champion you can start catching old mons again in abundance which, mind you, is barely halfway through the game since the climax takes place after going through only one side of the region.

And we'll never get a region like that again thanks to the fans' bitching, since now Game Freak is forever focused on pandering as hard as possible to nostalgia as a permanent backpedal solution to that one-time outcry.

Because no matter what, a large chunk of people always want to use the exact same 6 Pokémon every time.
“You’re not giving me the thing that I want right away, so fuck you.”

If Galarian Rapidash is an alicorn (winged pegasus) then it will most likely be Psychic/Flying, but it could also potentially be Psychic/Fairy.

There's not a whole lot of Psychic/Flying types that I remember, which is interesting. They probably went that route due to the "rarity."
