Hehehe, boy what luck.

Shiny Tapu Lele from Wonder Trade!

I actually don't want this at all though. I don't like the Tapu's and have no interest in this Shiny.

It's currently on the GTS, hoping someone trades a Celebi for it. Mythicals are very rare on GTS but I hope it comes through, Celebi is my favorite of that class.

I've been tasked with buying Pokemon cards for some 9 year old child of a financially strapped family for Christmas. Only issue is I haven't paid attention to what cards people actually want since like 1999. What set should I be getting this kid? Any suggestions? What's 'hip'?

ETA I keep seeing XY Break and Primal Groudon? Are those any good?

I know way too much about the TCG and could go on about it for a while.

XY can be pretty cool, but is an older set. Personally, I prefer the Sun/Moon sets.
As far as stuff that would just be fun to open, there are these new Pokeball tins that come with about 3 recent-ish packs and a cool looking tin. Elite Trainer boxes come with 8 packs, dice, sleeves, and a box to keep it all in. The bigger collection boxes have guaranteed "good" cards (currently called GX cards, but XY sets are EX) so there isn't a chance for disappointment with getting 0 "good" cards at all. They usually focus on one Pokemon or a set of them, like the Charizard GX premium box or the Legends of Johto GX premium box. Lost Thunder and Dragon's Majesty are the most current "hip" sets. Dragon's Majesty has a guaranteed holographic or better in every pack, which can be really fun to open.

As with all TCGs, part of it depends on how much you want to spend.

It looks like all the Targets and Walmarts around me have a few box sets for like $20-30? So I guess that's my budget. Honestly a lot of shit is sold out, which really surprised me. I didn't know Pokemon TCG was that big of a deal with the 'still young enough to get christmas presents' crowd. And I'm on too much of a time crunch for this to use Amazon, unfortunately.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'll be bringing a screenshot along on my shopping adventure.

ETA: I wound up getting him a Lost Thunder Storm Caller deck, and a few Lost Thunder booster packs. It's so weird that they have all these multipacks that don't say anywhere on them what generation/theme they're from? That seems counter intuitive.

It's free on the Global Link for anyone who participated in the last competition, so you probably won't be able to get much of anything good for it, at least until after January when it can't be downloaded anymore.

Yeah, lots of the good stuff at my Walmart end up taken pretty quick. And the buy one-get one free at Gamestop has cleared them out too right now. In the past couple of years the TCG has started to get more popular again, probably thanks to Pokemon Go honestly. I live in small town nowhere and we have a decent community of players. The Youtube collectors help too, there are some big channels for it.

Happy to help! Those are pretty good picks. The theme decks get a bad rap, but the recent ones have been really decent as far as including cards that are usable. Pokemon tends to like to use the multipack boxes to get rid of previous generation packs, so loads of the Sun/Moon boxes have XY stuff in them. Not listing any specific packs on the box lets them put whatever they want in there.

Beat Alpha Sapphire today, which is perfect timing because I'll be getting Let's Go Eevee! tomorrow. I got through it a lot quicker than Y. I loved the game - it's the perfect update of the original. A stupendous graphical overhaul with some cool new stuff thrown in, but still preserving the spirit of the original game.

The Elite Four weren't the cakewalk that the Kalos Elite Four were, but they were easier than the Alola Elite Four and much easier than the Elite Four from the original game who I never managed to beat. Steven was the only one that made me sweat (that fucking Mega Metagross). I completed the Delta Episode and managed to catch Lugia, which I was super happy about. Lugia's one of my favourite Pokemon from a design and concept standpoint, but I've never actually got one in a game, so that's another one off the bucket list.

I also raised a ridiculously OP'd Gardevoir. I know the Pokemon's OP'd by design, but considering I found her as a level 2 Ralts which only knew Growl, seeing her become my best Pokemon made me quite proud. She managed to hold her own against the Level 80 Deoxys during the Delta Episode after it dropped my Level 70 Mega Rayquaza in one shot. Sadly I didn't manage to catch Deoxys, but I've never been a huge fan of it personally to be brutally honest.

After getting somewhat bored of Nuzlockes, I decided to try the Monolocke challenge (only one typing allowed). I barely beat White 2 in a poison-only run, then crushed Alpha Sapphire with a flying team. Now I'm struggling a bit with a dark-only run in Pokemon Y; fairy types aren't as annoying as I thought, but fighting types seem to be everywhere. I'm at the Victory Road, had to go back to grinding because a Haunter killed my Malamar with Destiny Bond.

I also got Ultra Sun less than a week ago. I know pretty much nothing about the game but I heard it's almost impossible to do a Nuzlocke run... thoughts ?

If you decide to do a Nuzlocke in the Ultra games you're not going to have a good time. I'm warning you as vaguely as possible there are certain fights that will destroy your run. And these fights make the game harder than you expected.

Good luck!

Oh well, thanks for telling me! I'll give it a try after I'm done with Y, even if I fail at least I'll try to get as far as I can.
Edit : holy fuck my brother attempted it today and he just got crushed by Emily's lvl.10 Litten.

As for now I managed to get a Ditto with perfect IVs via a giveaway. Still don't know what I'll breed with it, though.

Unfortunately the Shiny Tapu Lele from that event has the Classic Ribbon that prevents it from being traded on either the GTS or Wonder Trade, making the one that @TrippinKahlua got a hacked Pokemon.

Doesn't matter, I got rid of it. Mistakenly thought I ran into a Shiny Drilbur on the GTS and traded the Lele for it. Turned out the Drilbur wasn't Shiny.

Does the Battle Tower/Frontier/Mansion equivalent in (Ultra) Sun/Moon force you to save before you challenge it? Or is it like the Trial House* where you don't have to?

*(AKA Battle Institute)

I've been playing Let's Go Eevee for a couple of days now and I'm really getting into it. At first I didn't like the fact you had to catch loads of the same Pokemon to gain experience, but after a while I began to enjoy the catching mechanics and "got" where the game was going with it.

The game looks absolutely beautiful and I love the fact you can actually see Pokemon in the wild and can walk around with members of your party. I can't wait for the next core series entry and I hope they keep everything about Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee, but I would like a return to battles with wild Pokemon rather than just catching. Hell, I'm still hoping we get a remake of the Sinnoh games on the Switch eventually.

I will say the Gym Leaders are a lot more difficult. Brock wasn't too bad, but Misty came dangerously close to kicking my arse. I haven't battled Lt. Surge yet and I'm actually scared to because I don't have any decent ground-type Pokemon at the moment.

Still haven't touched my game, I figured I'd let my brothers play catch up if they wanted. Lmao guess the novelty wore off or something, they haven't touched their files in ages. I should just start up the game tomorrow and go straight to Cerulean Cave, though I'd like to evolve my Dragonair first before I face Mewtwo.

Anyhoo, I was recommended a video on how Pokémon cries were generated in the first games. It's a lot of technobabble and you can easily get lost during the discussion, but it's rather rewarding (in its own way).

Trying to decide whether or not I want to transfer everything in my Virtual Console Crystal to Bank so I can start a new game, or if I want to autistically spend hours searching for Raikou and Entei, then catching Ho-Oh, before transferring. Leaning towards the former.

I'd lean towards the latter. You'd have to do the stuff later anyway so why put it off?

I almost always get both games in the generation (although I refused to get ultra sun), so the way I play is I get the first one the day it comes out, beat it, then bring all my pokemon up through the bank. I actually have some of the pokemon from my fire red still. Then I usually wait for the holidays to get the other game since it's an easy gift choice and use that copy to constantly reset when I get bored or want to play the gen again.

Its autistic af but I have a living Dex and can usually get a hold of any pokemon any one needs (seriously, ask and chances are you will recieve), as well as getting multiple copies of the events. I got pearl as my first gen 4 game, ended up with two diamonds from different fam members, then got a platinum and the amount of the shiny legendary dog trios I ended up getting from the event way back when was astronomical. I only have my set left I believe but holy hell I was swimming in them.

It helped soothe little Ido and I kept it up until the Ultras. I played moon and got sun for the holidays, but playing sun was painful and I cant say for sure I ever finished. I got UM and forced my bf to get US, but UM was even more painful (though I managed to beat it, I dont think bf beat the first trial) and I said fuck it. I didnt get US but I do regularly get extra event cards and force bf to use them so I can have my extra copies. His game is my bitch game.

On another note, that reminded me, I had a very distant family member i had never met before come over and steal all my pokemon games, at the time it was just before white had come out so I'm talking fire red through platinum. Little fucker would dump my case over and as we picked everything up he'd sneak them in his pocket, didnt notice until he was gone and everything was missing. We got all but one back, my emerald. Then the person who replaced it got pissy because we were so insistent on getting them back but in the same breath they whined about having to shell out a lot of money and thus assumed the game was new only to be proven wrong the second I loaded the game up. Yeah, they're expensive that's why we wanted them back... any other pokemon horror stories?

Lol, I've just realised I accidentally beat Sabrina ahead of Koga. I'm still not entirely sure how I managed that, other than I completely forgot the order of the gyms. No wonder she was such a nightmare, and I'm saying this as someone who had a Pokemon that knew Dark-type moves.

Never mind, Koga should be a doddle now.
