May as well give my thoughts on the new megas since I'm here. Including the shinies too since I have some shiny-exclusive comments to add. I'll attach some videos of the leaked megas in motion since they do exist out there, albeit with watermarks...

With those out of the way, what does my puritan ass think about most of these megas? I'll go in dex order to keep it tidy...

• Clefable: utter shit. Looks like an OC instead of a proper powered-up form. I honestly thought the beret thing would be some kind of stylized hair curl, but no-- it's like someone threw a cold bag on the fucking thing and then stuck fairy wings on its back. I think it's supposed to be an allusion to mooncakes, since Clefable's all about the moon and France is all about pastries, but it's so heavy-handed and disconnected from the design that it's just confusing and impairs the entire mega's concept (if it had one to begin with beyond "make Smogon cry"). I also dislike how they took out the only edge Clefable's design had by making its ears into weird, rounded blobs. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea... maybe there's some reasoning for it in its animations, but we obviously don't have direct access to those yet.

• EDIT FOR CLEFABLE: The full model leaked. I kind of get why they made the ears floppy now. I appreciate that they kept the hair tuft, too, even if it still looks like a fucking sick bag. I don't really like this thing, but I guess it's a 3/10 instead of a 2/10. Moving on.

• EDIT FOR CLEFABLE (DEUX): How does it keep getting worse? Holy fuck, 1.5/10, kill that tumor on its head with fire

• Victreebel: my still heart hurts every time I see this thing. I really loved Victreebel. I still kind of do, a shitty alternate form can't wreck my love for it completely. But... man. They could have done anything with this thing. They could've gone full Audrey, they could've made it look more like a snap-trap and given it a rivalry with Carnivine, they could've gone for some completely different plant... and, instead, they chose to choke it with a noose and make it look like a goddamn sambo. When combined with Scrafty turning into a goddamn klansmen, it does make me wonder if Gamefreak are trying to tell us something.

• Starmie: Really just a one-two punch with the utter disasters here. Another favorite of mine, btw, which I was really hoping might have been left alone for as long as humanly possible. No. Instead, we get a photoshop edit of the base design meant to get laughs out of preschoolers because Starman/Kamen Rider/something reference. I've made my peace with it at this point. I think this Mega has been leaked the longest out of all of them, and I've been stalwart in thinking it was probably not real due to a variety of factors, but at this point I have resigned myself to this series' fate. It's real, it sucks astronomical dick, and I will do my best to pretend it doesn't exist in the future. My seething alone could power the entire East Coast, and I am only somewhat ashamed to admit it.
  If I were to be optimistic... I'll say that I do like how uncanny it looks, I guess? It doesn't fit in at all. In any way. To any part of the series or any professional product. I sort of like the "trying to be human" aspect when combined with the alien origin. That's it.

• Dragonite: Boring, incompetent, I think I already went over this one? May as well do it again. I don't hate it, but I have a lingering dislike for it. Everything about it is just wrong. It has some neat ideas-- they are all executed terribly. What few redeeming qualities it retains from its base form are drowned out by the failed attempt to de-boot back to Dragonair. Its shilling in the anime and marketing has been similarly incompetent, and despite all of this attention it is painfully forgettable. There's just a hole in my head where memory of this thing is supposed to be, and I don't think it's ever getting filled at this point.
  It is also the main reason I clarified the "shinies too" rule, because Gamefreak did the dumb fan thing where they just made the shiny mega look like standard Dragonair. So, base Mega Dragonite still has Dragonite's original, jarring, color scheme, and Shiny Mega Dragonite "fixes" the fuck up of base Dragonite by making it just look like it isn't shiny. Everyone loses!

• Meganium: It's good! It's alright. It's very plain. It sure is a Mega Meganium. I'm pretty sure it only exists for the whole mega joke. Someone on /vp/ made comparison to plastic children's toys and I really can't unsee it. I never liked how the neck was hard to see when it initially leaked, but this kind of just seals the deal. Oh well, at least it's pretty inoffensive. Poor thing is so fucking lucky it didn't get screwed over like a good 70% of the other picks.

• Feraligatr: I'm so sorry, gatrbros.

• Feraligatr for real: I don't know whether this or Starmie is worse. Or Victreebel. Zygarde? God. Anyways. Yeah, this sucks! This sucks monumental donkey balls. They threw out any potential for a concept here by making it some shitty Totodile wannabe with a piece of ravioli strapped onto its back. It is abysmal in ways I don't even need to explain, because the most braindead layman can tell that this stiiiiiiinks.

• Skarmory: This is an interesting one, because people actually seem to like it for whatever reason. I don't. I've disliked it since the moment it was described. I don't like the idea of a Mega Skarmory to begin with, fwiw, so I probably wasn't going to like anything short of perfection on this one. And perfection this is not, because wow this is Mega Aerodactyl 2.0. "What if it had lots of spikes?" And nothing more. Except for eyeshadow and a really bad color palette, I guess. (It's not even a sort of rusted, goldish silver like its shiny. What was the point of this?)
  Speaking of shinies: it actually looks much better with the shiny palette, imo. This is mostly because it isn't as blindingly oversaturated, but also because it just flows much better with its base form. Seriously, look at these two: why even do this? Why not just make the color palette normal for the base Mega, or drastically change it for the Shiny? It's not like Skarmory had a stellar shiny to begin with. Why not take the opportunity to try and improve upon it like the team did with Gengar? Whatever.

• EDIT FOR SKARMORY: yeah this shit's ass
  it's almost so bad it's good, but... nah

• Froslass: Something's off here. I don't know what. There's this stench of knock-off pervading the design that only really came to fruition when I saw the portrait. To be clear: I don't think this design is bad. It's okay. It's more Froslass. It really just emphasizes the original's concept in a very straightforward, unimaginative manner. I think the face is fucking weird though. The point is probably to make it look more "mature," but the distance between the eyes is distracting lol. I'm not sure why they adjusted that.
  Anyways, it's alright. I think it might have worked better if they had emphasized the horns as greatly as they had the sleeves and hair. The way it is now, it's a little disjointed and very bottom-heavy in a manner that seems odd for such a floaty design. Firm 6/10, I guess.

• EDIT FOR FROSLASS: The full model leaked. My thoughts haven't changed. The bottom portion really just hammers home that knock-off feeling that it gives me. Feels like some shit you'd see on the bottom of an Elsa figurine, not an actual part of its design. Moving on.

• Emboar: My MAN. The first Pokémon I ever picked, completely hated or forgotten by most of the fanbase, finally getting some fucking recognition. It feels good, man.
  As for the mega itself: definitely the best of the three starters! It looked a bit odd, initially, when all we could see from it was a blurry screenshot.. and I still can't say it's great, but I like this! The topknot syncing up with the eyebrows to become a stylized crown does the design wonders, and the expanded fire-beard into a whole fire-chestplate is pretty cool. Top marks for keeping the shiny cool on top of that.
  I will say: I think this is pretty overdesigned. There are so many little bits and bobs that don't need to be there. All the little pieces of fire hanging off the model in the back, the detailing of the beard near the already-crowded face-- it looks much better in-game, judging from the screenshot, but the raw model is very overcrowded around the top to the point that the (also very detailed) war skirt thing makes the mega look naked.
  I'm also not a fan of the topknot and spear to begin with-- it brings Emboar into jobmon territory, which I don't particularly appreciate, but I can also excuse because 1) it kicks ass and 2) the original concept already leaned on it, what with being based off of a Chinese general and all. Solid 7.5/10, right on the threshold of greatness.

• EDIT FOR EMBOAR: I like the way its war skirt and flaming beard look like a giant Slugma? Kind of? ...anyways, it looks a lot less busy in-game. It's aight.

• Excadrill: Oh come on, I just got to be positive for once!!
  I don't like this thing much at all. I don't get the point of it. Excadrill is already quite broken, and the concept itself would have worked better with an evolution than a Mega. Nonetheless, Gamefreak decided to give us... this. Some Gurren Laggan mole with paint smeared on top of it. This really looks like a Gigantamax or something-- I don't know why only the claws get bigger, or why they had to turn orange, or why they made Excadrill's already-gross face even grosser with a gigantic fucking schnoz. At least it leans into that, I guess. I don't know. I'm not a fan of this thing at all and I really wish Gamefreak just gave it a better-looking evolution instead. Ugh.

• Scolipede: YEAAAH BACK TO POSITIVITY BOYS
  I like this!! I like this a lot!!! They did my man justice! They leaned into the horse thing and gave my man some SHINING ARMOR! Look at that fucking GLARE! Look at those HORNS!
  It should be worth noting: everything about this mega's appearance is super blurry right now. We've got one video and the portrait and that's it. But I don't care, because LOOK AT THIS BEAST. This is such an interesting and cool direction to take the design in!! Proper armor, gigantic horns that could skewer a grown man, teal highlights to compliment the base form's moodier tones that really make this feel like a power-up, GLOWING EYES. God it's SO FUARKING COOL. I'm not even being sarcastic.
  My biggest gripes with it atm are the chest plate (I'd have preferred if it followed the shape of the belly so that it could still roll forward in donut form) and the strange distribution of the armor (it cuts off shortly after the neck), but I can rationalize the former as a concession for better offense and the latter as a concession for better mobility. With how wide the armor is, it'd probably be very hard to carry a person properly if the entire body was laced with it. I still would have preferred that the entire body be armored, or that the design at least tapered off the grey into the purple, but I'm very happy with what we've got and eternally grateful that they didn't fuck this design up too much. Even its shiny looks good, going back to that sweet sweet Whirlipede scheme for the armor and sticking with Scolipede's for the rest of it!

• EDIT FOR SCOLIPEDE: GIANT GLOWING LASER HORNS FUCK YEAH

• EDIT FOR SCOLIPEDE (DEUX): Full thing's out, and I've had a day to ruminate on it... I still like it! I get how people think it looks like a discarded Future Paradox, but frankly I think that's an insult and this design goes above and beyond those pieces of shit to be genuinely cool. The breastplate is probably the most tacked-on bit (seriously, it would have looked so much better in almost any other configuration), and I think the colors are a bit too oversaturated on the body, but hopefully that won't be a problem in the future. The rest of the design is still pretty solid, especially given the competition. Probably my second-favorite behind Chesnaught, and maybe Delphox.

• Scrafty: Meh. I don't like it much. It's okay, I guess. I find it funnier than anything else. I really don't like how they tailored an entire species' Mega to one character's design. They keep doing this, and I keep disliking it, and at this point I doubt it'll change so I've just accepted it.
  It looks too human. That's probably funny to say given the original was already very human, but the way it's done here is just putting me off. The shedded skin really REALLY obviously looks like clothes, instead of kinda looking like pants and a hood if you squint a bit, with the Mega getting shoes and sleeves and everything. I'd really have rathered they at least keep the collar, or make the mohawk look less like a bit of hair sticking out from under the hood (maybe they could've put holes in the hood and made it actually spiky, so it made Scrafty look like some kind of masked punk? would've worked better for Paris lol). As it is now, it's a funny KKK member if you care about memes and a mediocre design centered around one person nobody'll remember in two months if you don't. If I ever end up playing the game, I shall name mine Ruckus (no relation).

• Eelektross: Huh! Not bad? I don't know! I think I really like it! The screaming face, the pod-racer arms, the wispy endings-- it's not half bad! I think I might need to see it in motion to give more opinions, because as of now it feels like it's half there. I think a lot of the appeal will be through its animations, given how wiggly and floaty Eelektross generally is, and it's hard to judge the full design without its textures. I'll edit in my thoughts when we get some more info on it, but I'm liking it so far.

• EDIT FOR EELEKTROSS: We got views of basically all of it, as well as a demonstration of it in motion... this is some Basculegion-tier wisp rendering (ie: incredibly shitty and way too solid). EDIT: this is apparently because it's mucus, not ghostly wisps. Alright then, kinda wish they communicated that better. I like the actual design, save for how abruptly the white and blue mix, though I do wish the + and - were both surrounded by claws so that this poor thing didn't look totally incapable of melee. Otherwise thumbs up, no real complaints. I like it well enough.

• Chandelure: Okay, we're backed to mixed thoughts. This feels... tacky. I think it loses a fair amount of the elegance the original design had by adding that crown, and the asymmetrical eyes heavily clash with how refined the rest of the design is supposed to be. It bothers me to no end. This was an easy slam-dunk concept, inoffensive and from the same school of design that gave us Mega Meganium, but it just... doesn't work. It looks over-encumbered and awkward. The proportions are distracting and the additions only make the design worse. I'm sure it'll look better at different angles, or when animated in some particular way, but as of now I'm not really feeling this.
  (Also, this is the point at which I'm going to mention that the Gemini logos in the bottom right are solely due to clean-up. All of these images originally had some variation of "fuck centro" overlaid on top of them, which obscured a fair amount of the designs and made Reddit throw an entertaining shitfit (detailed further in a post above this one). Most of the leaked designs seem to correlate with these images near-identically, so I'll be using them as reference for now.)
• EDIT FOR CHANDELURE: The full model leaked. It's okay, kind of balanced out by the enormity of the flame on top and the little diamond below. I think it definitely looks better without color, which is a damn shame. Ah well.

• Chesnaught: Already elaborated on earlier; my thoughts haven't changed much. Kick-ass comeback story and one of the best Megas in the game, if not the best new one. Solid 8/10 and serious contender for best Z-A Mega yet.
• Delphox: Already elaborated on earlier; my thoughts haven't changed much. Pretty silly-looking in-game, improved by fanart. Not a fan of the extra brooms and the way they handled Delphox's ears is silly, but it's not half bad and I really like the new color scheme.
• Greninja: Already elaborated on earlier; my thoughts have only soured. I found out that its arms have the same color-switching as its legs do, but they don't even add any ripped fabric for them like they did the knees. This whole design is a rushed mess that looks like shit. I don't like it at all and honestly prefer Ash-Greninja, which I never thought I'd say. Lol lmao @ all the obnoxious Greninja fans who kept shitting on the other two Kalos starters, though. They finally got their just desserts.
• Pyroar: I wasn't so down on this thing until the model leaked. I actually thought it might look alright even despite the plain description. Nah, nevermind. They gave it a fuckin' tulip hat. They have their reasons-- something to do with kanji, I think-- but I don't really care. This sucks lmao. Of all the ways to make Pyroar look better... it's like they took a look at them, laughed in the faces of anyone who suggested Gamefreak should use them, and then threw a banana peel at regular male Pyroar before calling it a day. This is so poorly done I can only feel bad for Pyroar fans. This must be their Mega Victreebel, and they couldn't even get two different versions for the very significant gender difference Pyroar's entire design is centered around. Fucking hell.
  All this design makes me feel is pity for those who like it and disappointment for what could have been. Complete dogshit.

• Eternal Floette: Who cares? lmao
• Malamar: Already elaborated upon, I think, but it's... idk, it's there. A pleasant surprise compared to what the leaked description insinuated. I like the big brain and the GIANT FUCKING COLLAR, but something feels off and I'm not sure how to describe it. I think it might be the weird lights on the end of its tentacles. I'm not sure why those are there. Anyways, next Mega...
• Barbaracle: Euuugh, wtf? The leaked description actually sounded cool, but this has got to be the worst execution anyone could have asked for. A horribly cluttered mess up top with almost nothing down below. No improvements to the color scheme (depending on how you like your contrast, you could argue the Mega's is somehow worse than the base form's shit brown and basketball orange), further distance from the kinda neat concept in favor of these weirdly flat horns making the horn gesture look way too forced, a horribly stretched face... I had really high hopes for this thing, and I can't say it's terrible, but looking at it unsettles me and I certainly don't like it. This thing looks like it's constantly screaming for help, but also really hates anyone who tries to help it and constantly lashes out at them.
  Also, LOOK AT THAT FUCKING WAIST. How does that thing breathe. A single movement would snap it in half and make the poor thing scream for the rest of eternity. Awful.
  The best part about its design (besides the concept) is a tie between the cool-looking segmented legs and the stone bits looking like giant mouths (without the black coloring ruining that impression and just making them look like random spikes). The hand gesture would have also been way up there if they hadn't broken Barbaracle's poor index and pinkie to do it.

• The kidney stone cherry on top of this shit sundae is that the mega doesn't even fix Barbaracle's legendarily terrible shiny. In fact, it actually makes it WORSE by adding RED EYES AND A BLACK CRACK to compliment its ORANGE AND NEON GREEN palette.

It's only 4 gigs (on Switch; it's 7 on Switch 2) so the hilariously meager amount of """content"""" makes sense. For reference: Legends Arceus was 7 gigs on Switch 1. They probably cut out any kind of side content or post game to sell as DLC.

If you buy this for anything more than 20 dollars, you are getting ripped off severely. Sincerely reconsider your spending habits and go buy something else instead.

My Pokémon-exclusive schizophrenia is telling me that it's because it gets a Mega in the DLC, because it seems to be in the same section as a lot of Kalos Megas and other families that are, for whatever reason, separated from the rest of their dex. Given that these lines include Dedenne, Talonflame, Clawitzer, and other Pokémon I've been rather suspicious of receiving Megas (alongside final boss exclusives like Zygarde and online-exclusives like the Kalos starters), I will continue to believe this solely to validate my own crackpot theories.

UNRELATED EDIT TO PREVENT DOUBLE-POSTING: Holy fuck the people who enjoy this game are going to be so insufferable.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for the literal biggest and most profitable IP in human history to have the entire kalos dex upon returning to kalos 12 years later, especially in a game entirely focused on battling, let alone have a larger dex than a gameboy game from 26 years ago.

Spoiler: BIG SPOILERS

• Hawlucha: Fucking boring, fight me. I already elaborated on how much better it'd look if they did anything more than just give the base form a headdress and I'm sticking to that. Go read that post if you care more about my opinion I guess.
• Dragalge: This is a placeholder review, because we know basically nothing about this mega right now. We have its portrait... and that's it. There's a possible model floating around, out there, somewhere... but it doesn't entirely match up with the leaked portrait, and everyone was crying AI the moment they saw it. Given the godless abominations known as Mega Raichu X and Y respectively, there's no doubt that AI-looking shit isn’t out of the question here, so I'll just take this model as fact and review it for now... and sigh in disappointment, as Gamefreak proceeds to do fucking nothing with Dragalge's actual design and just give it a bunch of hair for some reason. Why? I don't know. Maybe they were going for some kelpy sea-witch design. Maybe they thought this would make it look more cool or elegant. I don't know, and I don't particularly care. It looks like it would struggle to move an inch, and it would almost certainly look much better in a permanent reclining position (like in this art).

• EDIT FOR DRAGALGE: Not only is it real, but we now have a clip of it in motion:

• Yeah, I'm really not a fan. It's ridiculously disproportionate and does absolutely nothing with Dragalge's concept. This is just the long meme applied to a very specific portion of the design. I think I might end up liking it a little more as time goes on, but probably not more than mildly. What a fucking waste.
• Zygarde:

• Zygarde for real: A horrible, overcomplicated mess of a design. Powercreep in its absolute purest form (this thing has 216 sp.atk and at least 100 in every other stat), distilled into an abomination that barely looks coherent. Every part of it is flimsy and flat, all its colors are splattered about the place with no regard for what would look nice where, the actual design itself amounts to "100% with baby's first Unity cylinder held above its head." I already didn't like 100%, but this just made everything I liked about it worse. Gone is the bulky chest with heavy-duty arms, gone is the surrounding trail of coattails, gone is the weight with which it moved around and performed its attacks. This p.o.s just floats there and blasts lasers all around the place. Awesome. 1/10. Genuinely Mega Starmie tier.
• Drampa: It's alright! It's neat. Cool concept, decent enough execution. I always thought Drampa was alright, but it is painfully forgettable. This Mega unfortunately does not help that, and seems to exist solely for the purposes of angry grandpa jokes. And so that Vinnie didn't have to main Mega Lopunny, I guess. I'm still not giving up on that Pangoro theory, though, especially with the focus that Pancham gets in the intro... I like what they did with the horns, and I appreciate how the Mega floats around like an actual storm cloud. Why they didn't make this Electric/Dragon is beyond me, but modern Gamefreak is incredibly stupid with typing anyways so who cares.

• Falinks: ...meh. I don't care. I seriously couldn't care less. I guess it's cute. How this qualifies as a Mega is beyond me, and I don't even need to say that this execution is fucking stupid and hardly very "Mega," (much more Gigantamax, what with the only change being the leader of the troop getting bigger) but I guess it was only made for a joke in the first place so it serves that purpose well enough. I still don't like the equivalents of stupid fan renders being made into official designs.

Anyways, that's all of them. Of all the base-game Z-A Megas, I like... maybe 5 of them, and two of those are locked behind online play. Lol lmao, not surprised at all. I would give up Mega Scolipede, Chesnaught, Eelektross, Delphox, and Drampa in a heartbeat if it meant all of the other Megas never existed. This game sucks, and if you buy it you should feel very bad about it.

And, while I'm at it, I may as well throw in some music tracks. There's some really puerile shit in here that everyone seems to be praising for some reason. I am really hating Gamefreak's new obsession with dubstep/hardstyle, and I hope they grow some ears and move on from it soon.

EDIT: There are already rumors of a complete DLC roster, thanks to a lot of gaps in the Pokedex's data that seem formatted similarly to Raichu's new Megas. I've spoiled it below.

If this is seriously the entire DLC roster, I'm gonna laugh my ass off. 30 bucks for like 50 more Pokémon, a good fifth of which are just baby Pokémon or legendaries, is such a horrible deal. Assuming all of these get megas, too, the power creep is going to be through the stratosphere-- imagine a mega Amoonguss beating out all these new legendary megas.

Also, if this is the DLC roster, it is such astronomical ass that it makes up for the base game targeting a bunch of my favorites. Most of these Pokémon already have something very special about them and do not need any more fucking attention. Those that can't be described as "special" in some way (eg baby, legendary, competitively viable, cross-gen evolution, regional form, starter, etc.) are either underloved designs that will be drowned out by all the special megas or ruined so badly that they'll stand out.

WORTH NOTING: this does not account for any Kalos Pokémon getting new Megas in the DLC. Given that this roster is based off of gaps in Z-A's base Pokedex, and the base game has every single Kalos Pokémon in it, there is no way to know which of those will be tainted by Gamefreak's touch next.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for the literal biggest and most profitable IP in human history to have the entire kalos dex upon returning to kalos 12 years later, especially in a game entirely focused on battling, let alone have a larger dex than a gameboy game from 26 years ago.

Genuinely inexcusable.

I counted the total number of pokemon and I counted around 235 in the dex. I didn't count regional forms and megas and might have missed a few pokemon but it's around Legend arceus's 242 pokemon. It's kinda weird since XY was known for a huge pokedex (457 if you include all legendaries + mythicals). Also cities are huge irl, especially major ones like Paris which lumiose city is based on, so they def could've fitted at least 400 mons in the game.

Look, IDK why you would even like any of this? Game Freak's soul died the moment they were told about the requirements for the Pokemon series going forward, and you should spit on any future games they make. What little good's there is outweighed by every single disastrous decision they made for the past 4 generations, fumbling even the most basic of standard features like audio options (though that's more of a Nintendo thing, really. IDK why they're allergic to having peace during gameplay). Pokemon Legends Z-A is just the single most embarrassing piece of shit in this franchise, even more than BDSP.

• Set style battling is still gone
• Cutscenes can’t be auto-skipped (you have to manually hold a button when they play)
• Auto-save is now PERMANENT and, if players’ secondhand accounts are anything to go by, HAPPEN AFTER EVERY SINGLE CATCH
• Battle animations still can’t be turned off
• Buttons must be remapped outside of the game, in the Switch menu itself
• You can’t make Pokémon faint immediately after winning a battle, like they used to. I’m assuming you have to wait for their model to blink out of existence or something. Optimization? what’s that

Yeah fair enough, I was probably fine with the amount of old pokemon in XY due to all of them being in 3D now, but it definitely is pretty jarring that we went from the most new pokemon in a single gen, and all of them were pretty fun to use (no one BW1 team is identical) to the smallest amount of new pokemon introduced for a single gen.

Also since I replayed XY recently, I realized how rare kalos pokemon are compared to older mons. So it's not like kalos mons are super over-represented either. The quality of returning pokemon wasn't amazing either, did we really need EVERY rodent pokemon?
