People always seethe about objectmons like the key chain one even doe Voltorb and Electrode look like fucking shit compared to the newer objectmons, Also I love Cofagrigus and Sharpedo during the gen 5 games because their names would avoid the word filters so you could name your Pokémon fag or pedo or pedo fag, but the word filter would stop you from calling your Pokémon Faggot or pedophile or fuck or poo and so and so forth. I was still a child when I had this game, so I remember I was traded a Pokémon with the name fag.
I've brought this up before, but Voltorb and Electrode deserve a pass because they are a very clever twist on the classic RPG mimic even if they're underutilized. They can be encountered via overworld sprite and look identical to the sprite for items, their high base speed makes it possible they'll go first and use Self Destruct or Explosion before you can do anything.

And of course their Black & White successor would be Foongus & Amoongus which fill the same niche, but are more common in forest areas instead of electric themed dungeons swapping speed and boom for shitty slow Effect Spore/Stun Spore and heal stall moves which seems less fun to me even though I'm a big Black & White fan.

What a forgettable pocketmon Croconaw is. 🤔
Looks like I'm the only one who sees it that way (lol).

They're the Mimic of pocketmons...

Black and White sucked because it was the most JRPG shit ever rather than “Child wanders into a mafia/ eco-terrorist/ a Japanese science cult” fucking Cyrus is better than whatever fuck N (short for nigger because he is an annoying Nigger) was and he’s JRPG to a T. Most of the designs were awful and felt like left over concept art from Gens 2-4. Volcana, Joltik, Cryogonal, and Hydrogeion are the only designs that aren’t uninspired or just shit.

Hoenn did a better job of showing you enough new with the old. Kalos just felt like they half assed and rehashed shit. Bouffalant and the shitty British designed shit.

Wot if we did Ponyta, but electric, mate? Wot if we did worse Machop? Wot if we did a lazy Hitmonlee and Hotmonchan that look like Sesame Street characters? It doesn’t feel like a homage, it felt like being the Diet Pepsi to the Coke of Gen 1. Too similar to really be its own, but disappointing because not what anyone wanted. It basically just was them taking ever they learned from Hoenn and Sinnoh and spiting it in order to try to appeal to Gen 1 and appealing to no one.

The Swords of Justice also suck.

@Catgirl Tyranid put that into your pipe and smoke it

Oh yeah, and Feraligatr sorta reminds me of a Sakkra from the Master of Orion series (especially MoO2).

(The Sakkra are an alien species of sapient lizards who reproduce fast and can be rather expansionist.)

Thank you for fully demonstrating in real time what everyone has been discussing for the past several pages about no one having the same criteria for what constitutes a good Pokemon game while simultaneously caring too much about said criteria.

I liked Black & White dude, it has good sprites, an entirely new pokedex was great for a blind playthrough, and I enjoyed turning down Zekrom to utterly crush N for being a retard without the help of a Legendary.

It's okay if you wanted more out of it or preferred other gen games. Emerald would be my favorite if not for the slog that is the water routes in the late game.

This right here is why we're relegated to kanto slop and no innovation for the foreseeable future

Emerald would be my favorite if not for the slog that is the water routes in the late game.
It really isn't that bad. If you have something that can deal with Tentacool and something that can deal with Wingull then you're all set, nothing else will really surprise you. The section does drag on, but that's what repel is for if you can't be bothered. I don't know why people complain about this and not, say, Mt. Coronet, which I think is a much worse slog towards the end.

Repels are how I handle it, but it feels like the opposite of fun game play. Exploration seems aimless and any time you don't have lots of land marks it becomes easy to get lost especially your first go around. That's my only gripe with Emerald though.

Of course the guy bitching about Unova is also sucking off Hoenn. Unova may have a bunch of Pokemon in similar roles as Kanto Pokemon, but not only are they not even close to half the Unova Dex but it's not really doing it any more than Hoenn did. People are quick are complain that Blitzle is Electric-type Ponyta, but if you think that then that means Electrike is just as much Electric-type Growlithe.

The Swords of Justice are fine, I don't get the people who have a weird seething hatred of them.

I played it recently and it really isn't any worse than other dungeons. Going thru a cave is no more fun, I can't say why the water routes get brought up more often as an example of a tedious segment but it might have something to do with the routes themselves being too simple. Aside from Route 118(I think), the one with a current maze that you have to go thru multiple times to get all the items and trainers, every other water route on that side of the map is the same. Other than the occasional beachhead, you only have generic swimmers and diving segments to break up the monotony and they are a complete meme, more should have been done with them. My fix would be to add more land with a larger variety of trainers and interesting landmarks(sort of what Sevii Islands do in FRLG), cut off various routes and force the player to use dive to make the sections more interesting at the cost of making them more linear, and I would add more secret areas to actually incentivize exploration. For example, more caves like the ice themed one near Mossdeep with various rare Pokemon or items would be way off the beaten path and only available for those who look for it, meanwhile the mandatory path to the next destination would be shorter and more linear.

If nothing else, all the other water routes are way too short, so at least Emerald is unique in the sense that the water is part of the region's identity, even if some hate it. I would rather have them be longer since that's more content at the end of the day.

They were really good in competitive, so they're likely still malding that they got btfo in a match from 15 years ago.

Gen 5 isn't all that different in the plot department, you're still a child wandering into a cult, it's just a little more dramatic about it. It's also pretty rich to call gen 5 the diet pepsi of gen 1 when most of gen 1's designs look like Dragon Quest monsters right down to the Dragon Ball eyes.

They're all cool looking except for Terrakion, the thing looks like a buff bull with a man face.

Nigga the issue is that Gen V literally tries to be Gen 1. III and IV try to do their own shit. The issue with Gen V is that it’s all nostalgia bait. The entire dex is literally “let’s try to recreate Gen 1.” Gen III isn’t trying to do newer versions of old evolutionary lines the entire time. Unova is 70% trying to make a new Kanto. Unova is the beginning of trying to be Kanto again and again.

Swords of Justice are ugly and you like them because you have FAS.

Wot if we did worse Machop?
Funny, because Conkeldurr has always been one step ahead of Machamp ever since it came out.
  • BW - Conk = OU | Champ = UU
  • XY - Conk = UU/OU | Champ = UU
  • SM - Conk = UU | Champ = RU
Ever since Machamp got No Guard, it has been reduced to a gimmic pokemon. Absolutely no one is using Guts Machamp when it has Dynamic Punch and Stone Edge in it's arsenal to easily abuse with No Guard.

Meanwhile Conkeldurr can take statuses all day and not be effected by them. What it loses in SpDef and Speed, it makes up for it in HP/Atk/Def, so it's delegated as the bulky fighter that can get even bulkier that also hits like a tank.

I get it, "grandpa the clown" is a goofy design for a fighting type, but to say one is worse than the other when they clearly do different things is just flat out wrong.
Wot if we did a lazy Hitmonlee and Hotmonchan that look like Sesame Street characters?
The thing is that they were originally supposed to be ONIs, akin to something like this
d721d61af5f499ef7d1fdedbd887cf11280be7c0_hq-3022768276.webp
However, they would have clashed with Tornadus and Thunderus, which is why they did thick eyebrows instead.

Also what is lazy about having different martial arts in the form of Pokemon? That's literally what the fighting type is for.

Nigga design wise Gen V is awful. You can cope and dilate about it and even seethe when I point it out, but I am not just right, I am correct that they are shit.

I can appreciate Voltorb/Electrode for their usage as mimics but they still annoy me because the same people whining about trashbags in BW seem to forget that Kanto had the highest concentration of objectmon (as seen with Dear Feeder).

Alright, enough generalizations. Here's every Gen V Pokemon. List all the ones that are direct parallels to Gen 1 Pokemon.

None. If Unfeazant is a direct parallel to Pidgeot what does that make Staraptor? If Garbordor is just American Muk then what does that make Swalot? If Zebstrika is Rapidash but Electric then Manetric really is just Arcanine but Electric. A Pokemon can't be original if it has even a mild parallel to a Gen 1 Pokemon.

Animals in real life demonstrably belong to families that share common characteristics and demonstrably adapt based on their geography. You can draw parallels between them, but that's the point of taxonomy to begin with. That doesn't make the foxhound a knockoff of the beagle, and trying to analyze Pokemon designs purely through that lens is one of the most myopic and joyless ways to engage with the series possible. You can look at Conkeldurr and think it's just another Machamp, or you can look at Conkeldurr and think that Gamefreak hadn't done a fighting line with three stages since Gen 1 and wanted to try doing it again instead of just creating another two stage line that has a hybrid typing like they had for the prior two gens.

If you want to criticize Gen 5 and say that they shouldn't have tried drawing as much inspiration from Gen 1 as they did, then be my guest. I wasn't a fan of that direction when I first played them as a kid either. But saying that them trying a fresh start in a totally different part of the world for the fifteenth anniversary of the series was the start of the Kanto pandering is disingenuous. If they wanted Kanto pandering we would have gotten Kanto pandering, and we know that because Gamefreak did precisely that in reaction to BW's poor initial reception and it hasn't fucking stopped since. Them trying to recreate the experience that the Genwunners had for a new generation and it failing horribly because of those Genwunners is not part of that.

I mean, I was trying to bait the other guy into giving me his proposed list of rip-offs so I could go through and tell him he's stupid and wrong about all of them, but it seems my plan has gone awry since you decided to give me a Dumb sticker before completely agreeing with me down to the exact arguments I would have made.

I'm just gonna say what were all thinking, the gen 5 games are a more enjoyable and fun experience then the OG and Kanto remakes. (i still like kanto but vanilla kanto is kinda boring at this point)

I played black and white 1 as a teenager upon release, but not bw2. I played it until the end, but it failed to really satisfy my new pokemon craving. I wasn't overly praising it or hating it, but I remember the discourse. Aside from the objectmons I think a lot of people just didn't really like buying a pokemon game that took the MGS2 approach of not knowing what the fuck is going on when you start it compared to what we were used to. The story may have been stunning and brave for TPC, but it wasn't so good that I still remember it. Having the sequels was also weird because usually you would have the option to buy the refined 3rd game later, but these came out. I plan to replay it again soon here and will re evaluate. I have been trying to enjoy the new sets on pokemon tcg live, but they seem like a cool down to the power creep when more rotations pass. Gen II was always my favorite, but I can enjoy the simplicity of gen I not having breeding for IVs and egg moves, shiny craze, etc, etc. My love for gen II is probably nostalgia, but thats always just been the peak of it for me they literally give you two worlds in one game and I always liked those mons the most. I will say gen v haters can seethe all they want and even though gen i and ii were earlier what the fuck is this?
2t83lkrqd4zy.webp
(I don't blame gen v haters for not getting good pokemon games I blame all of the people that bitch about every new release. At this point I hope tpc, gf, whoever keeps reusing sprites and animations to spite the biggest complainers. Some of the mainline versions do good while others do not. I would rather see personally a compilation game with more worlds where I can really have that Ash Ketchum experience journeying far and wide, but all we ever get is one world. I never played pokemon for deep edgy jrpg stories and they never made good pokemon what it is.)

If you and @Computer God Autism are going to be disingenuous faggots, I’m just gonna call you faggots and move on.

Gen 5 is fun if you are a faggot who likes the gay ass elements for a children’s collectathon rpg. The sprite work is okay, but the designs just suck.

I’m not gonna call a shiny turd a gem. I’m not Indian unlike some of you.
