I'm well aware of that, I remember when the Mewtwo Wars took place (basically the HS-era format where Next Destinies' Mewtwo-EX was a Tier 0 deck) and when a certain Secret Rare Rayquaza was over $100 per copy due to it being a good answer to Quad Sigilyph for Rayquaza-EX/Eelektrik decks.
The music used for places like Ilex Forest, Ruins of Alph, and Union Cave made them scarier because it made me feel like I was being watched. Was an even worse feeling at night.
Yass the simple graphics and the eerie 8 Bit sounds rule. Everything is just implied and leaves alot to your imagination. As a kid it was creepy to go into the woods or an abandoned building. This is how it should be.

It's better if you're playing the Japanese rom way before it ever came out in English and you have no idea of anything that's going on. The ruins were the weirdest shit without being able to have context beforehand.

Troons and fujos can latch onto anything, it's a choice as to whether or not you let that impact your enjoyment of Mystery Dungeon/Colosseum/XD/Conquest/any number of romhacks.
