The fact there's even this much to say about him and his motivations shows how far the writing came in gen 9 IMO.
Arvens story was better, but Keirans more satisfying.

Speaking of Emerald Enhanced, I also just got the hack recently and although the Poke Community thread says that there are multiple difficulties to choose from plus several extra challenges to add variety to a playthrough, I keep getting "recommended mode" when starting a new game. I understand spiking the difficulty a bit compared to vanilla as to make things more interesting but literally the first trainer encounter having 3 or even 5 mons more than you at a higher level than your starter seems a bit sadistic at times. Supposedly the game is now "feature complete" according to the lead dev but I still can't find the difficulty selection screen amidst the layers of submenus. Any recommendations for it or should I just git gud?

Well it might have had a W name at some point to be fair! If it is a Barboach I think I prefer the final but only because that one isn't different enough.

No, I said that from everything we see, of course he’s going to be a shitty person. And a big part of me feels he has every right to be everything considered. That’s what gets results and his school is a ranking system based on those results. As proven by the former Ace. And therefore is it really shitty or just what needs to be done to rank highly at school and therefore expected? And as shown in DLC 1, trying to be good got Kieran nothing.
Seriously, the school head could probably do with being fired. Got off way lighter than protag’s school did.
Gen 9 in general being about terrible schools and family was a very interesting direction. Made for real good and interesting stories.
People say they want Pokemon to be more mature and tackle more stuff, I think it a lot of ways it has been since at least Gen 5. They don’t always land but they are very clearly trying.
Oh god, it’s got so much better.
I still think ‘oh my god, your parent was a dick’ is the funniest final statment for a final antagonist to go out on.
Pennyy’s ‘i hacked your bank’ followed up by Geeta going ‘do you want a job?’ Is also rather funny.

we're not his friend. he has never met us until that day and the next day. there's no reason for you to consider yourself kieran's friend any more than you were silver's friend. maybe by the end, but certainly not at the beginning.
genuine flaw of the dlc, agreed.
again, kieran and you JUST met. you are not his friend. if anything you became instant rivals.
arven's story is pretty damn good. i like nemona as a character, and i enjoy penny's battle theme, but arven is the best of the 3 'rivals' in the base game.
i'm fine with disagreeing on this, it's just a difference in how we see the relationship the character has with kieran. you see them as a friend, and because of that the player is betraying kieran, which brings more justification to his rise to villainy for a bit (on the level of children, of course)
i see it as, these children just met each other and do not know each other. you, someone who does not know kieran, are being told what to do by others, and it's not really cool for you to disobey them because you're a boarding school student.

. Max is a genuinely awful character in the anime (especially the Jirachi movie, he had a little pissy fit over May harmlessly counting the nights on a “wish-granting” charm).

Bleh, that type chart is actually worse than what we got
Bug is already an inferior type to begin with, making it weak to Fairy would be like "lol why even have a bug type in the first place?"
Also Poison not having something else to easily kill would have sucked. Fire is already OP-ish, giving it another thing to cripple would make it just as good as Fighting and Ground
Giving something that Ice types resist IS a good idea on paper, but in practice that would require either making more new elements or revamping the entire element chart. IMO trying to buff Ice NOW defensively is too little too late.

It would be nice if they at least resisted each other - it would kind if be on brand with the whole normal/ghost/bug triangle idea they originally had where they're based on fears (not that you'd be scared of faries, but it kinda fits with ghost and normal).
Its just Bug and Fighting that resist each other atm, right?

We spend the entire game making friends with everyone else but the one dude that actually really wants to be. It’s a strange choice methinks. As is us suddenly caring about rules. As you say, we just disagree on this. And honestly, story is really good from either viewpoint.
I’m still sad that it is revealed Nemona is just a ditz at ball throwing and the wrist thing isn’t because she threw so many balls because she is that Pokemon obsessed that she broke wrecked hercarm.
Penny is pretty great all around. Not giving her a new Eeveelution was a crime.
That’s one thing I like about Gen 7 - Gen 9. The villains by and large are honestly relatable to children and acting as such.
