I've been playing Pokemon for 20 years and still haven't understood how to get a competitive team going. There's so much information I don't even know where to start. Do you guys have any idea where I should start looking to breed and level up shit for a good team?

The Ultra Beasts would be a good start, since you won't need to breed them for any extra moves. You'll want to have an Abra with the ability Synchronize, since it makes wild Pokémon have the same nature half the time you encounter them. From there, make your freshly caught 'mon hold an Everstone and breed them. Their nature will be passed on straight to the child.

I have a fuckton of Abras if you need any, so yeah. Sorry if I did a bad job at explaining.

No you're good! Thanks for the info! When building a team (I know there's like a baton pass one and stuff) which one is best for a beginner like me? And should I practice with them on the Elite 4 or something to get the hang of it?

Ninjask is probably one of the best Baton Passers in the game since he has Speed Boost and Swords Dance, but Nincada isn't transferable yet. Scolipede's great too, but you can only get him through that Island Scan and I'm not sure if you can get Speed Boost on him. It may just be simpler to wait for Pokémon Bank's update, but eh.

My advice would be to pick whatever Pokémon you like that's competitively viable and build your team around it. That's what I tend to do.

Can anyone recommend me a good place (or places) to level up Pokemon? I've just started the postgame and all of the NPC trainers have Pokemon whose levels either match my team or are a bit higher. Most of my team is in the early-mid 60s right now and I'd just like to get them up higher.

I have Feebasses, Eevees + all her evs, and the starters if anyone needs them for dex completion. Also Chinchous and Drampas + some others. I've stalled the game to breed a rare menagerie for trading. Let me know what you'd like!

Unfortunately the removal of O-Powers, Triple/Rotation battles, and Blissey Bases plus the reintroduction of 5th Gen's curved Experience growth means it's incredibly hard to level up to 100 in SuMo compared to Gen VI. The best we have currently are refighting the Elite 4 and the wild Pokemon found around the Battle Tree. It's a very slow and tedious process.

Ugh, that sucks! I loved the Battle Chateau in XY because it was a fantastic place to rack up money and experience. And even ORAS had secret bases (including the Blissey Bases you mentioned) and the ability to rebattle trainers. Plus, there were ways of farming Lucky Eggs. Sun and Moon have none of that.

For the most part I love Sun and Moon, but I'm also pretty frustrated with "one step forward, two steps back" Nintendo. I understand that they want to try out new mechanics and all that, but it's so annoying when one Pokemon game has a fantastic feature and it's removed in all future games.

Dammit.

Still better than the even older mechanics. All the more reason to get my competitive Pokemon to level 100 in Alpha Sapphire before transferring them over.

The worst part is the fact that Hyper Training is locked behind the level 100 cap. It's pretty much mandatory if you want to use Type: Null/Silvally, one of the Tapus, the Ultra Beasts, or the Box legends without soft resetting forever since you can't breed them for max stats.

On the bright side, I'm pretty sure Professor Kukui gives you a Lucky Egg when you talk to him, which increases the amount of XP gained with each battle. Getting affection up in Pokemon Amie 2.0 will also give your Pokemon's XP a nice buff. I think there's an area in Poke Pelago to raise levels as well.

I'm still waiting for them to bring back HeartGold/SoulSilver's "your Pokémon follows behind you" gimmick.

Do you get to have a rematch with Tapu Koko if you don't capture it in the fight immediately after you beat the Elite Four? My Mudsdale managed to OHKO it and I don't want to lose out on getting it.

Yup, accidentally did the same and managed to catch it today. Just go back to the altar and touch the pillar.

Edit: In regards to the other tapu you actually have to battle the League again, then go back to the altars and touch them.

For people mentioning level-grinding; the best you can do is grab the Lucky Egg from professor Kukui after beating the League and going to Poni Island to train up. I usually hit up Resolution Cave and Poni Meadow to do my level-grinding and thus far haven't had a terrible time getting mons up to level 60 before slamming against the E4 again to boost up their levels further.

And for anyone in post-game, if you go to the Aether Foundation and go into the conservation area, head straight up from when you reach the floor to reach Gladion; talk to him for a little bit of backstory on his mother and the Ultra Beasts, and he'll give you a Type: Null as well. No battling, and you can save before talking to him in case you want to reset for better natures and what-not. It'll be level 40 and he'll give you all the memory disks to change it's type once it evolves into Silvally.

PS; Type: Null evolves into Silvally via friendship level-up, so if you want one fast I suggest giving it the Soothe Bell and running around doing post-game shenanigans.

Is there an equivalent to the friend code gardens from xy for getting pokes with good IV's and hidden abilities? that shit was dope.

I'm on the 7th trial now, and I feel like a Mallow's Trial Support Group is in order.

I'll start.
Hi, my name is Skipjack, I'm 18 years old, and I've been fucked in the ass by Mallow's trial.

I've been shiny hunting Rockruff for roughly 3 hours now and have an SOS chain of the fuckers in the 2-300's. I stopped counting after a while because my attention span is going to shit with this.

Nope. I think Poke' Pelago can sometimes give you Poke'mon with hidden abilities, but I'm not sure if it offers Poke'mon with good IVs. I haven't seen much about the Poke'mon the island can offer, really.

Not sure. I haven't seen it. Though, I also didn't know about the Friend Code Gardens until recently so...

I didn't have any problems with Mallow's trial, but I was a little overleveled. My Ribombee kicked its ass in two turns. Plus in the volcano park area you have access to Fletchlings that are one level away from becoming Fletchinders, which have dual resistance to Lurantis' Grass attacks and resist Sunny Castform's Weather Ball.

Lana's trial, though... That Wishiwashi and Alomomola can go fuck themselves.
