Eh, the trailer made me a bit more hype for SV but I'm still cautious.
I'm liking the new raid system, it looks like they're less of a slog than Max Raid Battles and I'm glad you can still search for randos to raid with.

The characters intoduced look decent, I’ll have to wait for more story details to make a better decision.

I like the fact that we now have three different stories to follow and that we’re allowed to follow ’em at our own pack but I have a sneaking suspicion that Game Freak may stonewall progression in somme way.
The Terastal phenomena and Terastal Pokémon looks like it'll be a nice revitalization (compared to past and current gimmicks) and might help with some of the balance issues that were still present in SWSH. The one thing that I find odd is that a Pokémon‘s Tera Type can be any of the 18 types, that’s going to be troublesome depending on the Pokémon present in the Paldea’s Regional Dex and ones introduced/brought back via DLC.
The newly-revealed Pokémon/forms (barring Koraidon’s and Miraidon’s) look neat.

Fidough looks a bit basic but since it’s in the same Pokédex category as Growlithe, Lillipup, Rockruff, and Yamper there’s a very good chance it’ll evolve. I have a feeling that it might have different evos based on its environment but we’ll have to wait and see.

Cetitan wasn’t what I expecting from a new whale-themed Pokémon but its workable. Its description doesn’t lend for a speedy Pokémon but it does lend for a strong bulky attacker that has the potential for speed thanks to Slush Rush (Thick Fat is nice but it only works on Fire and Ice-type moves while pure Ice-types have to fear Rock, Steel, and Fighting Types in addition to Fire). Its defenses scream Physical and that helps it to some extent but I worry about its Special Attack and Defense being abysmal.

Paldean Wooper is an interesting take on the line and I’m glad it still has Water Absorb to help with the new Water weakness that’s gained by swapping Poison for Water. My one wish is that the Ability changes only include swapping Damp for Poison Point, I REALLY love using Unaware Quagsire and I’d love to see the rage continue with Paldean Wooper’s evolution.
Their base designs don't matter. You're going to completely change how they look once you get the game.
As someone who played Gens 6 through 8 whilst barely interacting with the trainer customization featured in those game, SV will probably be the first games where I'll seriously get into the feature since the base Trainers are that awful.
*looks dumbfounded at more than one person not knowing that mythological fairies fear iron*
Good that I left tumbkr, huh.
I was just about to bring that up but to be fair I will admit it’s something you really have to do some research on to understand.

I just don't think it would kill them not not make weak, pansy character designs. Speaking of ages, other Pokemon games let you play as older characters, like Colosseum, they should let you pick the age since they're doing customization anyway.
But that kind of customization choice would be pointless as the only thing that would affect is the character height and maybe a few lines of dialouge.

Besides, in PLA you played as a teenager.

You could say that about anything though, like gender and race, but they allow for those changes. It isn't a big deal, just seems a bit odd to keep older characters only to spinoffs.

Why are you taking shit post about pokemon so seriously?
lol calm down

the game is for children

There was a brief period where they had teenagers as protagonists.

In Gen V the PCs are canonically 14 (though the ones from the first pair were designed as 16 year olds)
In X and Y The player character is at least 17, because a character who is stated to upon her introduction to be 16 mentioned how the PC is older than her in the Japanese version of the game.

But with with ORAS onwards, they went back to being kids again,

I used to always struggle with the old physical types because they're not always as obvious as "fire burn grass." Why does Bug resist Ground? Why does Steel resist Dragon? Why does Ground resist Rock? Why is Ghost effective against Ghost but Fighting is neutral to Fighting? Why would a 10 year old remember any of this shit?
…and now throw in double types, plus the fact that the game text doesn’t differ between 2x and 4x super-effective, plus the fact that there’s nothing actually indicating what types the opposing Pokémon even is, plus the fact that many Pokémon designs do not obviously telegraph what type they are just by looking at them…

No 10 year old is gonna be able to back-calculate the type effectiveness chart just by playing the game, the game’s just easy enough that they can still beat it even without worrying about that shit.

That's strange, I played those games but didn't notice, I guess it'd probably be hard to tell with sprites though.

The X Y protagonist is around 17???? I guess with the chibi artstyle used in the Overworld I assumed he was 10 like the others

Yeah I was kind of wondering about that too tbh.

I think making protagonists this bland will ultimately backfire on them because of how much harder it is for the memers and coomer fan artists to have interest in them. Regardless of the people who draw them aged up or not, fan art and content of the protagonists is something that usually drives the hype train, and I've seen almost no one who is excited for these games make any content or memes about these bland blank slates.

Even last Gen for example, all the memes with Gloria being Scottish helped get the fans excited for Galar despite looking like a bland lazy game. Or with Gen 7 with people calling the girl Chicken Chan.
We'll have to see what the rivals look like - Marnie had a massive coomer fanbase too.
Unpopular opinion, but I think BW had the best story out of all the games, and the implications and connections between Ghetsis, N, Zoroark and the whole underwater ruins were very interesting. As well as the whole two kings mythology.
It's not that much of an unpopular opinion now, but the bad initial reception forced Gamefreak's hand a lot. It really didn't help that the starters in gen 5 were all mediocre at best after a generation that had Infernape as the clear best starter.
Dragons being weak against Fairy is probably just for balance reasons without any real logic behind it. People had been complaining that Dragon was OP forever.
The thing is, Dragons were OP. Banded Outrage meant that you had to pack a steel type, and there's a reason Mega Garchomp got a speed drop. Not to mention DragMag - get a Magneton to trap and kill the steel type, then let your dragon type clean up.
That's how I remember it too, except for rust (Ground) and fists (Fighting) and fire (C'mon now).

The only reason I remember Poison being effective against Fairy is because Poison was underrated pre-Eternatus, probably thanks to every non-Levitating Poison type folding to every OP Psychic type and Earthquake spammer since Gen 1.
Poison types being super effective are more based on man killing nature, but poison types needed something. They didn't get much as Poison really isn't that good, but checking fairy types is nice.

Seeing all of you discuss about Pokémon types for 3 pages long reminded me why this game has the most autistic fanbase out there. Please, never change.

Nah, Sonic's fanbase is still the undefeated champion of that title.

Besides, this is an mechanic that's a part of the game. Of course we'd be discussing it.

It was recently announced that TPCi is going to reveal some Scarlet and Violet-era TCG cards at Worlds this year and we’re more than likely going to see said era’s newest Ultra-Rare gimmick cards if past reveals are any indication. I really hope that we get some balance to the game at some point with this new era but since this is Creatures, Inc. were talking about here I doubt it’ll happen any time soon.
I see a kiwi with a good taste in pokemon types. Now only if Game freak will give us a god damn ghost type eevee.
I don’t see Eevee getting a Ghost-type evolution at all due to Eeveelutions being based on the way Gens 1-3 handled physical and special moves, all of the types that Eevee evolves into were Special-aligned (Fire, Water, Electric, Psychic, Dark, Grass, and Ice). Dragon is absent for unknown reasons while Fairy is an outlier until you realize that, when you add it to the Special-aligned types, it causes the amount of Physical and Special types to balance out.
