Was looking at some footage of the gen 5 beta builds and they seem so broken and bare featuring test stuff that should have been finished by the end of d/p development, makes me wonder if gamefreak rewrote the entire engine or major parts of it during b/w development.

This is likely the case, as they wanted to go full 3D. They tested things out and must not have liked the results, so they decided to make the game 2.5D like the DS titles but with more emphasis on the 3D parts.

But this is what confuses me the most, the engine they built for gen 4 already uses 3d for environments. Why rebuild everything from scratch if what they already had works? And a completely new engine just to throw away in a very short few years when starting work on x/y.

There is no way that the source for d/p is so fucked up that they had to rewrite the engine and the gen 4 engine should be capable of doing whatever they were doing in gen 5. Really does make no sense to me.

Also, here is an interesting tidbit: For whatever reason, the BW prototype has a semi functional copy of Yoshi's Egg that you can play in single player. If you ever wanted to play that game on your DS, there you go. Also, TCRF mentions you could run from Pokemon Battles, likely just a debug function but it would be interesting if the devs were experimenting with a feature like that.

Not much that Gamefreak does makes any sense. I guess what DPP/HGSS engine was capable just wasn't enough, remember that they wanted to re-create NYC in the game.

Between all the crazy stuff with the lore and the beta designs I think my favorite reveal has been Skyla's whole existence happening because one of the devs was just horny and wanted to create a sexy latina pilot.

It's quite funny and quite human, you just don't get shit like that from massive game companies anymore.

Which is funny because Skyla looks nothing like her inspirations. Hell, she doesn't even look hispanic, I just assumed it was her getting a tan(in BW2 she is revealed to fly to a desert town a lot)
 
At this point I wish Game Freak didn't put Pokeporn in their internal documents not because it's degenerate (and it is) but because people won't shut the fuck up about it. So much awesome shit rivaling the Spaceworld leak and it's all overshadowed by TYPHLOSION RAPES GIRLS LOL

oh nah I know about that too, it sucked cause I always thought Mewtwo was cool but it wasn't as painful to me as the Vaporeon stuff or the new Typhlosion shit.

HGSS were build off Diamond version, how do we know this? Well, that game has Lugia in the intro screen. Diamond version? Well...

BTW at that point in time, this was still a Diamond/Pearl romhack, so most of that game's content is still there. Good example would be Jubilife City, shown off in an earlier video. Earliest versions available still have Dawn/Lucas as protagonists.
PokeGear themes look rough at this point in development, it seems Lyra's default was developed later as she still uses Ethan's at this point in time.
Speaking of which, since she's here this early on, I guess this deboonks the theory that Krys was originally going to be in the game. That said, why are Krys' assets still in the final game, then?
