As redundant as they are materially, they only share a weakness to Grass and Water and a super effectiveness against Fire while almost everything else is backwards between the two. Ground hits Steel SE, while Steel hits Rock. Rock hits Flying but flying is immune to Ground, etc.

I think the two also get conflated really easily because of their shared strengths and weaknesses to the three starting types so everyone is just used to blasting every creature with some dirt on its feet with the same moves. Also because every fucking Rock type in the first three generations (barring sudowoodo, nosepass, and regirock) is mixed.

I finished playing the main story to the demake version of pokémon sword and shield for the first time. I know that the demake being 2d and the sword/shield game being 3d, but holy shit the map is fucking ass, instead of traversing it, I was just using the corviknight travel to move around.

It was my first Gigantamax experiences and the raids are hard, I had to use all my team to beat a single pokemon and then catch it.

I was using my team all round, but then found a Lucky egg, put it ok my Clawitzer and he ended up being overleved beating everything in the game, until the Lee final fight. I had no idea he would scale his team to my, so I had a lvl 88 Clawitzer and the rest were 30 levels lower than it. The fight was really hard, I didnt had many itens and never found a quick claw, so I was always attacking last, and holy shit, his team was strong, I managed to beat all his team except a charizard that was one shot killing all my team so I had to use save states to solve the game. I found a pokémon that depending of the move would survive and give him hyper potions to save his ass and make him waste his PP, I had 20 hyper and ended up using 10 in the charizard only, he already used all his full restores I had just to connect to win, but I managed to win using my worst pokemon to use a thunderbolt and win.

After that I caught the sword and shield dogs and fought him again, now scaled to lvl 94 but before that I feed the rare candy to Dragonite so I had two strong pokemon instead of a single one.

This fire starter is shit, my firebug was way better

Tomorrow I guess I will finish the dlc/post game and maybe start one of the recs from here.

Crossposting this here for discussion's sake because Pokémon is apparently appearing at PAX West.
Nintendo is apparently popping up at PAX West.

Rate me dumb for not expecting it, but hasn't Nintendo been absent from almost all physical showcases for quite a while now? I know that they didn't go to E3 for the entire last decade of that expo's life for sure, and I don't remember hearing much about their participation in other showcases at all either. Last I remember them doing stuff like this, my age was still written in single-digits. I thought they just stuck exclusively to Directs and COVID gave them a great excuse to keep doing just that.

Very odd timing when combined with the indie world + partner showcase so recently, too. I wonder if that Direct was made to get the "smaller" announcements out of the way like they sometimes do before major ones?
I'm interested to see what they showcase regardless. I highly doubt it'll be a Switch 2 reveal or anything that spectacular, but it would be interesting to get some more details on stuff like that new Zelda game or some Pokémon titles (I'm aware that they're not the same thing, but Pokémon also has a booth at the event and there's no way they won't have any kind of cross-promotion going on at their stalls. Especially with Z-A probably being one of the Switch's first-party releases and having so little info on it atm.)

My current idea is that they'll have some gameplay demos of games they announced earlier in the year and maybe some small announcements for tinier titles or features in already-revealed ones. Probably nothing too major. Would be neat if there was, though, so I'm holding out a bit of cautious hope.
Maybe this is where the Z-A news will be? I highly doubt it, but it does seem very odd for Pokémon to have an entire separate showcase that's THIS big (and close to the entrance):

if they really have nothing new to show for it.

There aren't even any actively-developing spin-offs (or much more than mobile games and the year-old DLC) to show off, really, so is it just going to be the usual regurgitation of what's already out there? Or is there going to be something else?

Fun to think about. I've got low expectations as always, but I'm keeping a cautious eye out for this one.

Finished playing Pokémon Emerald Enhanced for the second time and loved it, the quest system, the new areas, the new stuff to do and so on. Is there any other hack rom like this?
I already replied to this post, but I would like to bring u Pokémon Emerald Seaglass, a game that implements a Gen 2 æsthetic to Pokémon Emerald while ironically updating other features. You even get following Pokémon here.
The only big problem is the developer using they/them pronouns.

Is this just a graphic mod with vanilla emerald? Since I just beat emerald enhanced and played for even longer than normal, maybe now it isn't the time...

As for the Sword and Shield demake, I finished playing the island challenge and Holy fuck, the map gets even worse, I was literally lost at the island and hopping crows looking for slowpokes, people and even gyms. I destroyed every battle with my overleveled team and put most of them at lvl 100. Got a bear as a reward and did more raids.

Got an item that sent me back to this snow island where there are raids, lvl 100 trainers, ultra beasts and looks like a quest for a new dude and legendaries. Guess I will stop right now since the map is just like another gigantic island and I doubt something cool will cole of it. Had a really hard raid fight with a lvl 70 gigantamax zekrom who would wipe my team and had 8 bars of defensive that I had to revive scum and heal to get some bars and finally beat and catch it.

Now... I sure can't talk about the normal sword and shield since I never played, but if this demake was similar to the original game, damn the story was a nothingburger and it had lots and lots of texts. I am not sure if it was just me not giving a shit but I dont remember platinum/hgSS having that much text on the game.

This demake felt less than various hackroms that I played and I dont blame the hack, but maybe the normal pokémon games seems... Hollow, less things to do. I remember loving playing the underground mines, and sword and shield gimmick was... Gigantamax, that is a fucking chore. The only good thing is the rare candy rewards that comes from it.

It may sounds like a doompost but what the fuck happened? I played every single game up to gen 4 and had a blast but this demake felt hollow somehow, felt barebones as gen 1. (My gen 3 bias is strong but even I cannsee that gen 4 is better, so it isnt a genwunner syndrome)

Nope. I should have been more detailed:
  • Complete Visual Overhaul: Enjoy a cozy, Game Boy Color-inspired aesthetic with revamped graphics throughout the game.
  • All Gen 1-3 Pokémon and More: Catch every Pokémon from Generations 1-3, along with cross-generation evolutions like Roserade, Mamoswine, and Farigiraf.
  • Tweaks to Underrated Pokémon: Underused Pokémon have been given exciting updates (e.g., Ghost/Flying Noctowl, Grass/Dragon Sceptile, Water/Fire Octillery) to enhance their viability.
  • Modernized Battle Engine: Experience the latest mechanics, including the Physical/Special split and the Fairy type.
  • New Minigames and Events: Participate in fresh activities, such as a Scuba Diving competition in Pacifidlog Town and Pinball games that unlock rare items and Alolan Eggs.
  • Following Pokémon: Bring your Pokémon along on your adventure with a following Pokémon feature.
  • Rustboro City Wishing Well: Use Wishing Stars in a gacha-like system to obtain random Pokémon, adding an element of surprise to your playthroughs.
  • In-Game Cheat Codes: Access cheat codes directly through the Player’s GameCube, offering fun customization options.
  • Adjustable Difficulty and Settings: Toggle Hard Mode, Soft Level Cap, and more by interacting with a book on the Player’s desk.
  • Enhanced Battle Backgrounds: Battles now feature lively, improved backgrounds that add flair to every encounter.
  • Unique Pokémon Typings: Certain Pokémon with traditionally “boring” types have been reimagined with new typing niches.
  • Improved Battle Sprites: Enjoy updated sprites, thanks to contributions from the Substitube and SageDeoxys communities.
  • Revamped HM System: HMs no longer take up move slots—once you obtain an HM and the corresponding badge, eligible Pokémon can use the move outside of battle automatically.
  • Auto-Run Toggle: Press R to enable or disable auto-run at your convenience.
  • Refined Tiles: Many tiles have been updated for a more polished appearance (with contributions from Arex on itch).
  • Spiky-Ear Pichu: This special Pokémon is now obtainable, with better stats than before. Finding it is a fun Easter egg for those who explore!
  • Quality of Life (QoL) Features: Options include disabling battle backgrounds for a GBC-like experience, turning off the soft level cap, and enabling Hard Mode for a greater challenge.
  • All Legendaries Included: Discover and catch all Legendaries, many with expanded events. Some, like Mew, Ho-oh, and Lugia, are accessible before you face the Champion, adding excitement for both new and veteran players.
  • Rustboro Wishing Well – Gacha System: Use Wishing Stars (found early or purchased later) to get random Level 1 Pokémon, adding replayability and variety to your playthroughs.
  • New Events and Items: Unlock helpful items like the Shiny Charm and even encounter Pokémon from future generations, including Tinkatink and Applin!

REMEMBER: the in-game PokéDex has been upgraded to show a ton more detailed information about Pokémon, including evolution methods and movesets! Please remember to use it!

I played every single game up to gen 4 and had a blast but this demake felt hollow somehow, felt barebones as gen 1.
Maybe I should play the demake myself. I already played about half of SwSh; maybe I can compare.

Man the game looks great, what I dont like are the white outlines and how my pokémon moves after beating an enemy, I always think he was poisoned. They added more houses to the second village, and this river to the third, I wonder how they will do the other cities. Even emerald enhanced didn't change locations, but added others.

I always wondered if hack roms cant change the pallete colors or objects due to code or space limitation, I would love to see a PC-98 vibe pokémon game.

Now back to the Sword and Shield demake,
One feature that I never saw in any pokemon game and I loved is how they change the colors of the attacks to show if it is super effective or not, they have color variations for every combination and even for me that already knew of the types combinations, it helped a lot, even more when I don't know many of these new pokemon in the game. So it is a feature that was completely amazing and should be in other games.

Seaglass is very pretty, the Pokédex is much improved, and I kinda like rolling the Rustboro well gacha machine after cheating in a few dozen of the item to roll it. However, there’s a lot of visual bugs (including a very pronounced and consistent menu flicker which the programmer insists is working as intended to prevent slowdown) and frankly I’m way too used to Gen 5 TM mechanics now to go back to the one-and-done days outside of the old vanilla games. I’d generally recommend it, just know you’re getting closer to an Emerald visual upgrade with a few fun/useful additions than a full Emerald enhancement.

Playing Emerald Seaglass, jesus that Heracross fucked me over hard, had to save scum paralyze to win against it, he would oneshot all my team without fail, and I barely had effective moves against it.

I have a personal rule that I always use pokemon that I never used before but I am breaking in this game since it gives johto vibes, I will do with my favorites from Johto.

Also the Pokedex system in this game is so fucking awesome, no more going into bulbapedia to see the moveset level or when it evolves. Also the best addition so far is the dive mini game, it is literally a smaller version of the pokemon park but underwater, kinda shame there is just 200 steps and the pokémon dont appear. It is really hard to win tho, After 20 tries I only won twice.

I am really enjoying the game.

Man the diving treasure minigame is really fun. Without any item, I got a lvl 35 Huntail worth 500 points, later by using the item that attracts stronger mons, I managed to get 800 points.

The minigame ends up being a fun way to Farm gold. What I dislike is the lvl cap. Let me overlevel this shit

I just fucked up my Inclement Emerald EX playthrough by giving myself all the TMs at the start for team building purposes. Now Roxanne cannot give me her Rock Tomb TM, preventing moving her dialogue forward to the part where she gives me her Cut guy (IE and its cousin Radical Red both do a sort of Alola thing where you just summon an HM slave instead of having one yourself). You cannot drop, sell, or let a mon hold TMs; essentially all Gym leaders will be softlocked from now on. I regret my deeds and now I have to trudge around with a Bibarrel in a difficulty hack.

Fuck this I’m going back to Seaglass, it looks like a lot of fun, TMs be damned.

Pokemon games have told you if an attack is super effective for some time. You just have to beat the Pokemon once or hit them with an attack for it to tell you underneath the attack.

They don’t do colours though.

Seaglass tms are one single use only so be careful.

Not sure about the new games but this feature was on a GBA hack. There are some features that are possible to do in older games (I still remember one hack that every time you would ask the nurse for heal would skip the dialogue and move you down for instant healing to stop you asking her to heal again.

Or the acro/mach bike that you could change on the fly

Those simple qol features that should've been on other hacks

Finished playing the Emerald Seaglass, this was my team. The item to evolve Snorunt was locked after the 8th gym so I had to skip evolution for a good 10 levels.

The final battle was quite cool, as expected, Ampharos was a beast and my favorite from the Second generation at those games and he did destroy Wallace. Gardevoir is such a bullshit pokemon but completely worth to use every single time. Swampert is a beast. Arcanine is very good.

Besides Battle frontier, is there anything new in post game Seaglass? I already caught Latios, Rayquaza and beat Steven. Don't care for battle frontier tho.
