I'll never stop hating this trend of just taking a career or something similar and just making it a humanoid animal creature and calling it a Pokémon. A cat wrestler, a bird archer, a cat musician, a bird dancing faggot, a frog ninja, and so on.
Pretty much everything Lone Star said up here sums it up. Doesn't help that Scorbunny's colors look weird and every decision made about its design was executed poorly.
Okay, actual autism time ahead. Get those puzzle pieces ready for me!

I agree 100% in spirit with you guys. The starters being "humanoid", jobs, both. But my kicker is it would take only so many, IMO just a couple minor design tweaks OR even merely posing/making them act more animalistically, to make a lot of them legitimately on par with older designs or at least good ones.

Like, Emboar and Delphox only really need to go on four legs. Delphox already has a normal fox body (I believe) and Emboar just looks like a top-heavy boar. Chesnaught is the same - it can amble around like those ancient glyptodonts, which I think are its animalistic inspiration. Greninja may look a bit silly but pose it sitting like a frog does. Incineroar is to me proof this concept works, as crazy as it sounds: maybe it's the cat nerd in me, but it's actually pretty generally similar to sabertooths (buff, longer arms than legs, giant flexible fingers and semi-plantigrade feet to... wrestle prey down and stay steady as it does so. Think a cat stretched into a bear shape) or a particularly top-heavy/exaggerated modern tiger. It even goes for some of the more monster-like ones just merely being posed more "animalistic" or "kaiju-like". Again Incineroar clasping its fingers together, standing with a hunch and an angry look than rougish grin, would make it feel more like a big monsterish cat standing up.

At that rate, again IMO, it would make them feel a lot more natural and on the level of Empoleon, which technically has a job/gimmick, clothes, and personality but didn't feel like it couldn't not act like a penguin. Or Feraligatr, which doesn't match actual gators 1:1 in anatomy but still gets put into official art swimming around in rivers and stuff. And so you can have Chesnaught stand bipedal in battle, but may run on four legs to get anywhere fast on the world map, Incineroar can have a two-legged walking animation but quadrupedal running one like some other mons have, etc. It just feels more like Game Freak just doesn't want to do what it claims in thinking how the pokemon would act in an ecosystem in addition to its gimmick, or work the gimmick in with the actual animal. I can accept a cat wrestler or frog ninja, they make sense, just exaggerate the existing animal design that was made than force the animal into the gimmick.

Some aren't salvagable at all though. I genuinely apologize to (Friendly) Primarina.

You made me check /vp/
At this point, I have no hope for it. The other two were a crapshoot, Entei is going to be even worse
100 bucks it's going to be bipedal furrybait.

@Mayor Cody Travers
The 3D Models are the main problem. Their poses and movements are what makes them uncanny.
Especially Delphox and Cinderace don't pass. They play like fielding a human with a fox/wabbid mask.

The starters being humanoid jobs is a byproduct of the obnoxious world tour bullshit the series does now. The Galar ones were a soccer player, a drummer and a secret agent, all related to Britain. Then we got a flamenco dancer, a banda singer and a prostitute, all related to Spain.

It's the legs with Cinderace that makes a big difference IMO. Look at Delphox's legs. You can barely see them but it's obvious it has the same legs as Braixen i.e. not human shaped at all:

Incineroar has defined thigh muscles, which make it look far more human-like, but not as much as...
1701592998596.png
Cinderace not only has defined glutes. but also defined calves. The clown shoe feet all add to the uncanny feel, like it's a guy in a suit. I could tolerate the "job" nature, as @Lone Star so aptly put it. I could even tolerate the stupid little Jeremy Beadle-esque hands. It's the legs and feet more than anything else.

The slow news days eem to grating on us.
I awai the release of The Indigo Disk. At least I can actually ge to my hack that way.
I've mostly been playing the Pokémon TCG lately, some of the decks that came out of Paradox Rift's release are downright nasty. Seriously, I've gotten Turn 1 donks with Iron Valiant ex/Entei V because players are retarded enough to run Dark Tera Charizard ex decks with only a single 60 HP Charmander as their starting Pokémon.

I'd exclude Rillaboom. As a monkey, it's design relies on having human features and except for the three poor elemental ones, gamefreaks monkee designs are always an A+.

Primarina as a hybrid likely based on a mermaid comes off as it's intended to be like that.

Skeledirge is quadrupedal and a successful example of integrating the core features of a profession into an animals design without creating a person in a suit.

I agree with pretty much all of those. I would personally put Delphox in borderline/debatable, but that's only because I like it :story:

I agree about the monkeys, too, except for Oranguru. YMMV. I saw a clip once of Nebby teleporting everyone around. One of the girls gets teleported to a counter with an Oranguru like a barman. I, not being familiar with the Pokémon, genuinely thought they were doing some crossover joke with a different anime because Oranguru looks so out of place.

Like I said, YMMV.

I remember that episode, giving the alola anime a chance last year.
In the show, Oranguru is basically the barkeeper and therapist of alolas humans and Pokemon alike.

He's humanoid but animal-like enough at the same time to pull this off without being too out of the place. As it's highly intelligent and can make other Pokemon fight each other like a trainer, he can sure mix some drinks as well.
I agree it can be weird and displaced if you didn't watch the whole episode.

What's really important is that I'm sure more than one white woman identified with the girl in the scene and fantasized about being fucked by the Chimpanzee after making him their emotional tampon.

What's it like? I haven't watched the show outside clips since season 1 and Alola seems like a good place to start again. Between Lillie trying to pet Pikachu and missing Vulpix with a Poké ball from like two feet away it just seems like harmless fun.

I was going to ask where this came from but then I remembered that big "content creators" unironically put out stuff like this:
At least they introduced me to Dragapult. Probably now my favorite post gen-VII design alongside Raboot. Look at how cool this guy is

I remember there being a fad where a buch of Nipponese women were in love with an 'extremely handsome' gorilla... fo rea life.

Jobmon worked in XY because each was supposed to represent an RPG class...in an RPG, it was meta and it made it easier to identify which starter you wanted(other than for it's type or how much you liked how it looked). Gen 7 forward shit the bed, I don't think there is any connection between the 3 in Alola and Galar/Paldea trio are just stereotypes based on the region

It's not bad, you should give Alola a chance.
It's the best the series has been since season 1, but thats just my opinion.
I know the fanbase for gen 6 is huge, Kalos never caught me but i got stuck to the episodes about the tropical islands.
Even tho there are many filler episodes and often the cringe marketing becomes as obvious as it could get, but it's a solid arc altogether.

The setting is beautiful and full of life, imagine the exact opposite of the wild area from swsh,
also not as linear as the gen 7 games so you get to see a lot more of alola that you don't see in the games.
The storyline is as close to the games as possible and you didn't have had to watch the last 35626 seasons of the series to know who is who.
Ash visiting a trainer school with professor Kukui as the teacher and the trial captains as students makes for a welcome change.

The battles are rather intense, even the battle royale, that ingame suffered from the 3ds engine more than anything else,
gets its fair share and is actually good.
You don't have to deal with the team rocket trio every episode, they sometimes don't even appear for multiple episodes in a row.
Alola offers many parallel storylines and sidestorys, multi-part-episodes with the total length of a movie and a full roster of new antagonists that all have their own backstories.

The show ditches two of it's oldest and most severe flaws: the linear formular and lame fights.

Thanks. Now I have to watch it.

Good to know. I think I'll watch it, thanks.

I'm old enough to have grown up playing the original games, but I've always had a soft spot for Alola. Something about the look and feel of the games. And the people there are so nice. From what I've seen and heard, gen VII was the last hurrah of the series, before it sank into mediocrity and money just being automatically transferred from consumers' bank accounts to TPC's coffers.

I will counter with my own autistic opinion because I mostly disagree with yours and I think it might make for some interesting conversation:

PassStretching itToo human-looking
Blaziken- I don't know why people say this thing looks outright humanoid at all. Just because it has a bipedal stance doesn't make it human-like. Besides, it's a bit hard to make a fighting-type chicken without a little bit of anthropomorphization, especially going by the standards of gens 1-3.Emboar- Honestly, it'd have looked better as a Dark type on 4 legs, but this opinion has already been beaten to death. As it is now, its proportions are still abnormal enough to pass for a monster and not a human, even if there's no real reason beyond its (literally human) inspiration and unnecessary Fighting type for it to be on 2 legs.Chesnaught- The execution here just sucks dick. If this thing is supposed to be a glyptodon, I really can't see it. There's no reason for it to be standing this straight, nor for its arms to be this thin, and the tacked-on beard just makes things worse.
Infernape- I honestly think this thing is mostly to blame for the jobmon trend, but it still looks monke-ish enough to get a pass. That face and the "shirt" are pushing it, but all of its mannerisms are extremely ape-like and it's pretty hard for it not to look human-like considering the species.Delphox- Obviously not human. However, definitely still humanoid. I think it passes for a fox witch quite well, even if the concept itself is a bit questionable, and I think most of the issues it has are worse in Braixen and just end up as part of Delphox due to carryover. The wand is the worst part about this one.Primarina- I know this doesn't look too human in stature, but everything about this design screams "man-made" like neither a selkie nor a seal ever should. There's no reason for this thing to have a tied mane with pearl beads, no reason for the tiara-like protrusion from its head, no reason for it to have eyelashes and a humanoid face. Even the extremely humanoid focus on singing only gets a pass because it's literally based on creatures that use vocals to lure sailors into danger... but those creatures are also part-human, so it doesn't really defeat my point here. If they wanted to make a selkie, they should've either gone all out (like what they did with Mr Mime or Jynx in terms of human faces) or stuck closer to the animal inspiration instead of doing this weird in-between.
Empoleon- Mostly gets a pass because you'd have to tell me that this was based on Napoleon for me to know. It's a very penguin-like design- it just has some hints of humanoid to it (namely the way its sense of honor is executed + the lacey pattern on the front) that might give away its inspiration if you're looking really really hard for it.Greninja- Really really stretching it. It's only really here because I think the design works very well in spite of the pretty blatant humanization. The simple fact that it's a frog and not a cat or a dog removes pretty much every aspect of furrybait, and the combination of weird-ass frog proportions with normal human ones keeps it looking uncanny enough to fit as a pocket monster.Incineroar- Do I really need to elaborate on the multi-paragraph essay I shat out earlier in the thread?
Both Decidueyes- The most human thing about this one is probably its headgear, and you could easily pass off that hood/hat as camouflage or those glasses as normal markings. You could make a case for the bow-stringing and the arrows, but if you did then you'd need to start arguing against literally any Pokémon that uses a human weapon, and I don't think that really helps things.Hisuian Typhlosion- Not discussed nearly as much as it should be when humanoid starters come into the picture, and I don't know why. The stupid thing literally has eyeliner and a necklace- not to mention, the same issues with mannerisms as the Galar duo do. Look at that hand gesture in its official art, man. That's not a badger thing.Inteleon- Just barely still a guy in a suit to me. Frankly, I don't think I want to give its awful proportions any credit by claiming that they were added to make it look less human, because that's so very obviously not the case. This motherfucker is humanoid enough to have a built-in cape and birthday suit that resembles human clothing and acts exactly like a human at all times. The horrible sausage fingers and bloated head come across more as a design oversight than a genuine attempt to make it look more monstery.
Rillaboom- I've been trying to convince myself that this isn't a guy in a suit since it came out and it's kind of working. The most human thing about it is that god-awful retarded drum. If you took that shit away and just had it beating on a wooden chest (its own) like everyone and their mom agreed would be better, it'd barely be human at all.Skeledirge- Only not in the "pass" category because of the built-in clothes (which you could argue aren't clothes quite easily) and mic. It also doesn't help that, despite being very obviously built to be quadrupedal, almost every single piece of marketing featuring this thing has it on two legs and singing into a microphone. Probably the least humanoid non-ape starter we've had in years, though.Cinderace- The prototypical example for damn good reason. Already elaborated on earlier by Friendly Primarina, whose points I mostly agree with, and it has the same problem with mannerisms and clothing patterns that I mentioned in Inteleon.
Meowscarada- Dear god, they put a cat in thigh-highs and gave it a cape and mask. And it behaves exactly like a flamboyant arguably horny showman. Kill it. Please please please.
Quaquaval- There are so, so many ways that you could've made a fighting-type coot that didn't involve absolutely destroying this poor thing's spinal cord with a massive derriere and literal pants on human legs. There are so, so many ways you could've incorporated hand gestures into wings without literally shaving the bird's arms and giving it human fingers. There are so, so many ways that you could've imitated a mask without giving this thing massive human eyebrows and a pompadour.
Why did they choose to do all of these things?

(I tried putting this thing into spoilers but it broke all the formatting so I have to leave it as is. Sorry. Hopefully my sperging doesn't take up too much space.)

I'm curious as to how Inteleon and Meowscarada get a pass from you and Quaquaval is only "debatably" humanoid, but Delphox is going too far and Cinderace is straight-up too human.

I suppose I admit I feel like the one guy on Earth that sees Incineroar as just an exaggeratedly-styled tiger on two legs the way Feraligatr is a cartoony gator being bipedal (I mentioned him for a reason besides comparison, he is my favorite water starter), but I came back to Pokemon fandom in Gen 7 after leaving in Gen 4, truly unaware of the jobmon and humanoid issues that built up and blissfully thinking people would just headcanon or draw all the starters acting like animals anyways. That was a hell of a culture shock to see the reality. But it also was helped by my nerdery on cats and paying attention to the asshole Incineroar in movie 20 and pokedex entries making its personality far more capricious like you expect actual big cats to be. If they drew the Movie 20 Incineroar’s action with the base posing in my attached pic in last post and not gorilla walk it’d solve everything IMO.

Meowscarada technically got more digitigrade legs and cats paws than Incineroar, but absolutely acts like a furry seductress in return for nominally better anatomy off the bat. What a monkeys paw situation there. Inteleon… I could see it crawling up a wall lizard-like for some reason but seeing it run across a pond like a basilisk feels silly even if that looks silly in real life. And Cinderace I just feel is on the level of Primarina as too human in accessories, even if I would love to see some on-model or model-enough fanart having it run or sit like a real rabbit.

———

I’d like to say it’s obvious now I am a fan of the immersion into the world of Pokemon as fantastic creatures in nature and ecosystems, and how they work or function in that. So to at least shift the topic away from the design essays, I am glad the DLC will canonize starters being catchable in the wild for role-playing purposes for sake of building a dream team in X or fan region.
