Since this thread keeps bumping, I had another thing I was thinking about for a long while.

Has it been mentioned on the thread how the Pokemon starters are slowly becoming less and less authentic each generation?
Literally each time a new set of starters is revealed, they look like they were fakemons made for a rom hack or fangame, the worst examples being gen 5 and gen 7, damn they were all fucking ugly. The design for Torracat and the name given to Incineroar quite literally came from deviantart after all. Gen 9 is no different, why are they all looking like they were OCs stolen from deviantart?
Also I think this trend started from as far back as gen 4, but especially now the new starters look even more random as shit. There's no cohesive art direction at Game Freak, it's actually impressive in itself.
Eh. We've had this discussion earlier and, long story short, it's a matter of opinion. Styles change throughout the games, especially when Game Freak has different artists work on the mons for each gen, so each gens mons looking different from the others is to be expected. I'd even argue that it's intentional as these are suppose to be different regions (with a few exceptions).

I've found each of the gens starters to be charming, but I understand not everyone feels that way.

As for Incineroar, I'm not buying the "Game Freak took this" theory. I'm chalking that up to pure coincidence until I'm proven otherwise.

Loving the memes that are coming out of this

I was guessing laziness, but given how even internet access is now costs money, I can totally believe that they wanted to put out a DLC. Which I find odd because IIRC, one of the supposed reasons why ORAS never not have a "Battle Frontier DLC" is because they believed the game is released "fully complete" or something along those lines. I guess money talks.

What I really want is for Pokemon to make their games have a more immersive world. Like, why can't we be Pokemon nurses or teachers or fishermen or an Elite Four member? Why can't we have our characters age, or have jobs beyond training and catching Pokemon? I liked the hotel job in X and Y and the detective agency. But maybe I'm expecting too much from a game marketed towards children that must be rushed out on a yearly basis.
Keep in mind ORAS was released in 2014, back then nintendo was just considering DLC (mario kart 8 for the Wii U was the first to get DLC and also why people kept spamming "it's ok when nintendo does it", smash followed soon) and gamefreak are slow to adapt, I believe another reason was the 3ds game's code being a monolithic mess making adding more pokemon hard. I recall people hoping they would add the ORAS megas to X/Y and being disappointed.
The ultra games had so little changes they could have been easily dlc, so between buying (and playing through) the same game with minimal changes twice I believe DLC is the least bad option, mind you I am not saying it is ideal. Ideally they should release the games in a finished state and with the full dex and the DLC should have new pokemons, forms or transformations and new areas.
Another reason they are opting for DLC is that way the mythicals/legendaries they plan to distribute later can't get leaked as soon as the demo is out/someone gets an early copy, since those won't even be in the data or at the very least have a placeholder.

My expectations for the series are low, yet legends arceus gave me a bit of hope. I read how it was made by younger staff, and considering how long people have bitched about masuda and ohmori maybe letting the new blood make games isn't so bad.
Even if legends arceus was a fluke and the mainline games continue sucking dick at the very least they are releasing spinoffs again, meaning we might get a decent game once in a while.

You mean like this precious derpfish? How can you not love that stupid face?

I don't know. Between it's brown coloration and cry,...

... I can't help but initially think Stunfisk is shit in quite honestly the most literal sense. I don't really think it's a poorly designed Pokemon per se. A Pokemon based on a flounder is interesting on paper. It just doesn't personally bring me any joy to look at.

for the incineroar thing, beyond them being fire/dark cats and having the really obvious traits of that type/species combo, (like being red and black… the two most iconic colours for fire and dark respectively) there’s not really anything tying the deviantart to the actual one. Not to mention that the litten line has a pretty clear inspiration in Tiger Mask, an actual Japanese wrestler who had an anime and a heel version with a black/red motif.

to say nothing of the sheer number of people regularly producing fakemon. It’s less some clear plagiarism thing and more the monkey typewriter thing playing out - as the number of Pokémon and the number of fakemon increase, the occasional match is inevitable from sheer volume.

What about the Galarian form that attempts to capture stoners by having poorly drawn pot leaves on it?

Galarian Stunfisk looks kinda like a bear trap and the idea of a 10 year old stepping in a bear trap gives me a slight chuckle. Also if you didn't notice, its mouth looks kinda like a Pokeball so it also has that mimic motif going for it. I like it marginally more than standard Stunfisk but it still has that off-putting cry.

Would be better without the footprint pattern, but the fact that it appears in-game as a pokeball and can ACTUALLY trap you if you’re not paying attention or are an idiot was a pretty neat touch, I feel.

One of the big reasons I don't like DLC for games like Pokemon is that the cartridge ends up being useless/outdated once the DLC store or servers go offline. I think it might be better for players to emulate it instead of buying a secondhand cartridge where half the content is missing. At least then they can use mods to add all the QOL stuff that never got patched in.

Kinda unpopular Opinion: Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon > Sword and Shield DLCs
To be fair, both are Cashgrabs and USUM are basically the same game as Sun and Moon.
Well, at least it was another game where you could pick the opposite Version and a whole new party to travel with to get as much experience as possible from it.
If you have a friend that has the opposite versions of your two Alola games, with a bit of trading you could get every Pokemon in the Dex on both you and the other persons versions.
With the DLC, you are stuck with just one game.

tfw you always liked shiny sneasel, and you finally get one... and it's the hisuian version uguuuuuuuu

i'm already not the biggest fan of the hisuian sneasel and sneasler, but jesus christ their shiny versions are fucking hideous, too.

just want muh cute pink and yellow sneasel

I literally said "what the fuck" as soon as I saw it. Like what the fuck.

Game Freak, slow the fuck down so you can polish up your games, Jesus.
They're probably excited that they finally get to do something new after 25 years.

1- Gen 9 reminds me how fucking old Im getting

2- I cant wait for this to be another amazingly mediocre entry in this series that has been on a mediocre streak Sword and Shield (or even since Gen 6 to some)

i ran into the one shiny i was always afraid to run into - abra. it was an abra outbreak, and it was there, in my sight, and i threw a feather ball at it... and it escaped and ran away. THE ONE FUCKING SHINY I KNEW WOULD BE HARD TO CATCH BECAUSE IT WOULD FUCKING RUN.

i also ran into a shiny chimecho and tried to battle it, and it stayed a few turns, and then it ran, like a cunt. fortunately i already have a shiny chimecho.

it's okay, though, because at least i caught a shiny silcoon... because that's a consolation.

That’s what you turn off auto save and immediately save whenever a shiny shows up. Then you can just soft reset until you catch it.

i considered doing that, and for a shiny i actually genuinely give a shit about, i might, but otherwise i refuse to savescum these outbreaks. GONNA PLAY THIS LEGIT DOOD.

so i'm creating my own misery, don't mind me.
