The open-ish world and using Pokemon to traverse terrain was used in PLA, real-time combat was used in the MOBA, and the raids were used in the next mainline games, so they reused some of the ideas they came up with. Into shittier versions, but that's what you get with this franchise. The only credible theory I am seeing with what happened to this project right now is that it is being reworked for Synapse, the Splatoon clone. This is still a retarded idea, but at least it makes more sense than it being shelved "because it wouldn't sell".
I'm trying to think why they would've cancelled this. My best guess is that it was caused by concerns over the franchise's image. Maybe a higher up pointed out that real-time brawling with realistically-textured Pokemon was too far removed from what they wanted Pokemon as a brand to be. But it's odd that they let the project get so far if that was the case. It could've also been like Scalebound where they just got too ambitious for the team's capabilities and decided to pull the plug.
