Did a little exploring today while running and errand, and thankfully it seems like once I get outside my neighborhood, there's a lot of Pokespots, Gyms, and cool Pokemon. Unfortunately, they're not really within walking distance. I'm not gonna bother with the whole gym thing because as I said, I can't really afford to protect one and all of the gyms have pretty much been claimed. So I think I'll just mooch off the red gyms in my area (Team Valor, yo).

Oh, and I caught a Scyther and a few Eevees, so that was pretty cool.

Just toyed with it a while ago. I suppose my GPS on my phone isn't up to snuff for this sort of thing, and the AR wouldn't work for me since my phone doesn't have a G-sensor either, but from what I could see, I suppose I would be putting too much time into it if I have to get out of the house more often, draining my battery away at this. I just feel I'm too old for this sort of thing.

Unfortunately, I've heard a lot of similar stories from other people who live in rural areas. From what I understand, the rate of Pokemon spawning is related to the amount of cell phone usage in an area. So people who live in apartment buildings in cities can just sit on the couch and catch a bunch of Pokemon, but people who live in the countryside have to walk for three miles to find a fucking Rattata.

I think the best course of action is just pulling the app up whenever you do go to a more populated area for whatever reason.
Yeah I have just been sitting on my couch catching stuff.. I just thought that was how it worked. My apartment building has a pokestop too, which is kind of weird because its an enclosed area but maybe people right outside the building are able to access it. Also, apparently someone just set up a pokelure at it!
It'd be nice if they made the rural areas more likely to get rare pokemon or something, so there's at least some benefit to being in the middle of nowhere.

I live in a rural area with pretty shitty cell signal [I get LTE on my couch though, which is nice.]

The only thing I've caught outside of my starter or incense was a fuckin Squirtle, which just so happened to spawn right after I caught my starter. Everything else was incense. I went on a mile walk and still found nothing.

Oh would you look at that, it's the Valor and Instinct HQ.

I'm also disappointed about the shortage of Pokemon in rural areas. I've come across no more than about 15 (most of the time the same ones keep cropping up) and only one or two gyms. Haven't even reached level 5 yet.

There's also the factor that, if you're going for a walk around the neighborhood, there'll often be some Pokemon off the path, meaning you'd have to go wandering into someone's yard to find them. Fuck that, people have already gotten themselves into trouble because of stuff like this.

And logically-speaking, wouldn't it make sense for Pokemon to appear in rural places? What with the "walking in tall grass" mechanic from the games, you'd think there would be a bunch out in the countryside. But maybe that's just me thinking too meta.

This is definitely a problem, and it's a shame Japan didn't think it through. But for others in this situation, I agree with what Cosmos said; try to use Go when you travel to more populated places. Or use incense whenever possible and just hope you get lucky.
I had the same- one of the pokemon spawns near my place was, as I worked out, pretty much on someone's front doorstep, which would be creepy as fuck to go and try and catch. They definitely need to up the spawns in rural areas though.

I live out in the middle of nowhere. @R.A.E.L. fifteen is actually a lot compared to what I'm dealing with at home. I've had to use incense and it's only brought out maybe 3? But, I have to admit that it's realistic as fuck. View attachment 113411
See? Ain't jack-shit around for miles. Just like in real life.
But I work in a more populated area, so I just leave a little early and go snooping around before work.
Incense is pretty BS as well. I sat and watched my phone for the full 30 minutes of incense without moving the phone, and it only attracted maybe 3-4 pokemon, all of which were pretty common ones that I'd already seen. I'm not sure if the incense attract rate is an X-per-time-period function, pure RNG, or some factor related to the other spawn-influencing-factors like population/cellphone signals/whatever it is that makes more pokemon show up.

Found your mystic gym

Hopefully they'll do something about the spawn rates for those of us in rural areas, because this really isn't fair. Also the constant downtime with the servers.

But that aside, I finally caught an Eevee on my way to the movies today. Snagged myself a Magikarp too because why the hell not. Missed out on a Bellsprout and Seel though.

I decided to go around my state to "popular" cities and found quite a few things, in one area I found 3 gyms and 12 pokestops

Through out the day though I was just collecting rattatas, weedles, and pidgeys. I collected enough pidgey candies to evolve and power up so now I have a strong ass pidgeot so that's good if I want to defend or fight for a gym (team mystic woo).

But yeah that was pretty much it, I got a few new Pokemon like squirtle, a bulbasaur, a zubat, a horsea, a bellsprout, a paras, and both nidoran's ^^ good day

There's 3 gyms in my neighborhood (Looks like someone thought making their house into a gym was a good idea lelkek) and a memorial to a guy who died a decade ago from cancer was turned into a hotspot for picking up Pokeballs. And the church, holy fuck. "Depiction of Jesus's Crucifixion" is now a hotspot. So now kids can catch Pokemon under a statue of a bleeding half-dead naked Jesus.

After a quick wander around today, apparently an old memorialised WWII Anti-aircraft gun is apparently a pokespot. As is the local settler's museum...twice (seriously, two pokespots from the same place)

I downloaded it, and it wanted me to wander either where real pokemon live (The Coyote infested woods across from my house, and we're talking the east coast coyotes that are like 3/4 wolf)., or into the fields nearby with the ornery farmer with a shotgun lives. So I went and played some Ticket to Ride instead. Mildly salty.

Man up and kick some coyotes.

I just had a Staryu spawn half a block from my apartment. Last night a Magmar spawned in my roommate's room around the same time. Is there like a special spawn during certain times of the day?

Dusk/dawn seems to occasionally be good, but it could just be RNG.
Also there does (vaguely) seem to be a difference in spawn types during night and day.

I was browsing the Pokemon Go subreddit and right now one of the most popular posts concerns the lack of activity in rural areas. If you're frustrated with this problem, this thread is a good read because it reminds you that there are tons of people who have the same problem. They're also trying to get Niantic to reopen the submission feature that allows you to submit locations for Pokestops/gyms.

Went to a bar and picked up Pidgey. I guess you can go to the same spot after 5 mins and get other things.

So what you're saying is the optimal strategy is to be like CWC and play Nintendo games at the Bar instead of trying to meet people, or being a normal schlub and just silently drowning your own failures in a bottle?
