Broken Sword 1+2 are great, the remaster that adds in some extra puzzles and stuff is good too. Broken Sword 3+4 are meh. Broken Sword 5 is really good tho at times it is just trying very hard to recreate 1+2 moments.

The X-files game is a good fmv filled point and click, can be difficult to get running since it's all abandonware now and needs dosbox.

I never played it but I always heard good things about Spycraft, another FMV adventure game.

Hm, what's that I see just little below the "buy" button... I can save 10% and only pay 828 euros!

Surprised I didn't see any mention of the Golden Idol series, released in 2022 and 2024 respectively. They aren't quite traditional adventure games but they scratched much of the same itch for me. The DLC available for the first-game is great as well. I thought the second game wasn't as good, but it was still a solid 8/10.

I loved the Broken Sword games when I was a kid so I was surprised and pleased to see remasters available when I was browsing Steam the other day. I don't expect we will ever see another renaissance of adventure games, but there is good indie stuff coming out and stuff from small studios to enjoy.

They're probably good games, but good Lord, that artstyle is fucking hideous.
 
Basic bitch tastes but I've been playing a lot of the old LucasArts games lately and love them. First three Monkey Islands (2 is my favorite), Day of the Tentacle, and currently working through Grim Fandango rn.
I’ve been playing through some old Lucasarts games this week, Sam & Max on Sunday, Curse of Monkey Island on Monday and Fate of Atlantis yesterday. In the final scene of FoA I noticed something about the music I didnt pick up on the last time I beat it years and years ago:

I don’t really have anything to say about it, just thought it was an interesting connection.
Slightly unrelated, but the way iMUSE worked in the old LucasArts games is truly something incredible, and even still surpasses a lot of dynamic music implementations used in a lot of modern games.


Rough idea considering OP of said vid isn't using one of the correct sound configs, but it still shows off how well the effect works.

Played them all they went downhill with the change to unity.

Return to monkey island was pretty fun though. I hope we get more of those. Looks like Gilbert is doing some kind of Roguelike now
 
I hated it. Could have been good Twin Peaks style game but then got swallowed into its own ass by becoming meta.
Yeah that was definitely the worst part about it. The story just kind of falls apart. I liked the characters and the atmosphere enough that I can overlook it

Anythining before Midnight in Salem is the old format and they are nicely nostalgic for fan of nancy drew. You usually can get pretty cheap bundles for the old games.
 
The more time passes, the less favourable view I have of The Séance of Blake Manor. It looks like a classic point and click adventure game with a more spooky atmosphere and the real horrifying thing - a time based system! (based solely on interaction rather than real world timer, so in theory it's way less bad than it looks).

Just about every part of the game just doesn't work:
* Puzzles are non existent to the point of being near parodies. Almost every puzzle has the solution written either in the same room or one next over.
* Mind map system works automatically and the only thing the player does is assemble the reason why the person is there, Curse of the Golden Idol style. But there are so little options you can literally guess and it will be good enough.
* Game is sandbox but in practice you are locked out of progression for enough characters and areas to do it near linearly.
* Time limit doesn't matter - I think I had extra 6 hours after being extremely conservative with my actions. Besides that, none of the secret meetings you discover are necessary for the best ending and the only difference is the position of characters (speaking of which, why can't I speak to characters in their rooms?).
* Way too much characters - There are over 20 suspects in the game, too much to create any real depth and it actively makes the individual plots harder to follow, especially at the start of the game.
* Magic in detective stories - There's a reason it's a rule not to do it. It just muddies the water on what the villain can or can't do, and there is so much fucking magic on display that you wonder how it's even supposed to be set in the real world.
* Mystery sucks - The whodunit is preset so no randomisation, because each suspect has his own "sidequest", obviously the one suspect who you can't do his sidequest or access his room until late in the game is the perpetrator (and you get a memo that literally tells you when you will be able to get to visit each room).

So the game comes out as a glorified Visual Novel, but because the information and characters are laid so sporadically it can't even do that. It's a classic case of why you shouldn't trust Steam review scores, because idiots get impressed with (relatively) high production value and fake depth.

My personal adventure game tier list. If I had to introduce someone to the genre I'd have them play the top 5 and then go from there. Dark seed 1 is in D because the game timer makes it super, super stressful and unfun to play. Dark seed 2 honestly should be up in C because it crosses over into "so bad it's good" territory.
